Notes: Three formulas of cookies prepared from 50:45:5 (I), 50:40:10 (II) and 50:35:15% (III) wheat flour, broken rice flour, and defatted soy flour, respectively, baked in a microwave oven (2450 MHz) for 240 sec, were rated as the best of six formulas for flavor and texture by a trained panel. Cookies of formulas I and II were preferred over formula III by a consumer-type panel. Cookies of all three formulas showed no significant differences in nitrogen balance, apparent biological protein value and apparent net protein utilization. Apparent protein digestibility and protein efficiency ratio were significantly higher in formulas II and III than in formula I.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The numerous results obtained from tests on86 kinds of concrete of varying mix design and strength were processed by mathematical statistical methods to examine the combined data. This study increased knowledge of the influence of technological aspects-aggregate content, particle size distribution, water content, mixing time, on the strength value determined by the combined method as by particular methods (ultrasonic pulse or rebound hammer). In some cases the concrete strength values from both parameters of this combined method satisfy the Laplace-Gauss normal distribution model and others satisfy the Pearson distribution. Though the coefficient of variation of these strengths is lower than the coefficient of variation of cube strength, it rises close to them when based on one parameter. Therefore, this pleads for the combined method. The article also includes recommendations for the user of the combined method and three general regression equations with graphs for approximate determination of the strength of concrete in a structure when the mix design is unknown.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary This research is founded on new knowledge of the possibility of measuring the propagation time of transverse ultrasonic waves in concrete and on a measurement method devised by the author. This uses the measured and theoretical characteristics of concrete obtained by the ultrasonic method, that is to say the velocity of propagation of transverse ultrasonic waves vt, the dynamic modulus of elasticity in compressive and tensile loading Ebw, the dynamic modulus of transverse elasticity Gbw, determined on the bases of their ultrasonic parameters, the velocity of propagation of longitudinal waves and a complex characteristic composed of two pulse velocities (vt and vL). Extensive study of the degree of correlation between the compressive strength and the two characteristics of concrete mentioned above led the author to formulate the following statements: Correlations R=F (vt), R=f2(Ebw), R=f3(Gbw) and the multiple correlation R=F1(vt, vL) show an analogous degree of correlation which is always higher than the correlation R=f1 (vL) used up till now. From the practical point of view, the result is that to determine the strength of a concrete in a building or a structural member, it suffices to measure the propagation time of transverse ultrasonic waves and to apply R=f(vt) expressed by a regression equation. Introducing other parameters (velocity of longitudinal ultrasonic waves, the concrete density and the Poisson ratio) which implies undertaking additional measurements, will no longer give rise to appropriate effects. By varying the aggregate content and the concrete density at certain points in the concrete, it is possible to reach greater accuracy in the determination of compressive strength of concrete with the correlation R=f3(Gbw).

Notes: Stereoregular polyamides containing two chiral backbone carbons in the repeating unit were prepared by polycondensation of bis(pentachlorophenyl) 2,3-O-methylene-L-tartrate with 1,9 and 1,12-alcanediamines activated as N,N′-bis(trimethylsilyl) derivatives. The polymers were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and 1H-NMR spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. Both viscosimetry and GPC were used to estimate the molecular weights which ranged between 6000 and 44000. These polytartaramides were readily soluble in chloroform, displayed moderate optical activity in solution, and formed highly crystalline films.
