    Notes: Thin films of In2Se3 deposited by thermal co-evaporation crystallize upon vacuum annealing almost single phase into an, up to now, unknown structure. Only when the films are capped with a thin oxide layer before annealing, the reportedly stable γ-In2Se3 structure, single phase and aligned along the c axis forms. Rutherford backscattering confirms an In to Se ratio of 2 to 3 for both structures. Nevertheless, the new structure has distinct x-ray diffraction peaks and Raman spectra. The new structure has a much lower resistivity than the γ-In2Se3 structure, consistent with its smaller electrical and optical energy gap. Both structures show large photoconductivity. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The respiration of coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch, weighing between 20 and 45 g was measured at gradually declining oxygen levels and at temperatures ranging between 14 and 17 °C. The maximum and minimum oxygen concentrations tested were 235 and 41 μmol/L, respectively. Respiration rates were measured for 24 h at 235 μmol/L before the oxygen concentration was lowered stepwise to 157 and 81 μmol/L. In one single trial, the oxygen level was lowered to 66, 53, and 41 μmol/L. Respiration was highly variable in time. Peak activities always occurred during the night. The standard metabolic rate at normoxic conditions was estimated to be around 4 μmol oxygen/g/h. The highest rates reached values close to 15 μmol oxygen/g/h. At reduced oxygen levels the standard oxygen demand slightly increased to 4.5 μmol oxygen/g/h, indicating a higher demand for vital metabolic functions. Due to the decrease of swimming activity, the maximum oxygen uptake rates dropped to 〈 8 μmol oxygen/g/h below 81 μmol/L oxygen concentration. Under long-term conditions, physiological and behavioural adaptations play an important role for survival and need to be considered for the design and operation of fish farm facilities.

    Notes: Free-swimming coho salmon fry Oncorhynchus kisutch of some families showed preference (relative to the behaviour of naïve sibs) for the odours of similarly aged non-sibs to whom they had been exposed during the post-hatch (alevin) stage and the early free-swimming (fry) stage, but not the embryo (egg) stage, indicating that odour-learning had occurred during the later developmental periods. Recognition (i.e. preference) of sib- pecific odours was evident after a month, and in one case 5 months, of separation from those odours. Thus, young salmon incubating in their gravel nests in streams appear to have the capacity to learn the chemical characteristics of conspecifics and retain this memory for at least several months without reinforcement. However, in addition to the general attractiveness of sibs and familiar non-sibs over unfamiliar non-sibs, some non-sibs were consistently more attractive than others. Preference between two different non-sib odours could be reversed by changing their relative concentrations, indicating that relative attractiveness is a function of both familiarity and odour concentration. Therefore, although juvenile coho salmon learn, remember, and are subsequently attracted by sib-specific odours in early life, familiar odours are not always preferred over unfamiliar conspecific odours. Preference in dyadic assays is therefore an insensitive measure of recognition.

    Notes: The influence of magnetoelastic effects on the anisotropy in NdFeB permanent magnets has been investigated. A relation between the magnetostriction coefficients and the magnetoelastic anisotropy is derived for crystals with tetragonal symmetry. Transmission electron microscopy experiments show that stress and strain are present at the boundaries of the Nd2Fe14B grains. The origin of the stress is discussed and an order-of-magnitude calculation of its effect on the anisotropy is provided for thermally induced stress. The calculations are in good agreement with the measured influence of stress on coercivity. Both experiment and calculations show that homogeneous stresses have only a small influence on the coercivity. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Magnetic and structural properties of sintered NdFeB magnets with addition of various amounts of DyGa as a separate powder are studied and compared with single-powder magnets of the same nominal composition. When the magnets are annealed above 640 °C, the coercivity decreases strongly as compared to magnets annealed below 640 °C. Decomposition of the δ phase (Nd6Fe14−xGax) accompanies this drop. Measurements of coercivity as a function of temperature show that the decomposition of the δ phase does not increase the effective demagnetization factor, but enlarges either the magnetic inhomogeneous region at the grain surface or the exchange coupling between the grains. Line faults, which are present within the Nd2Fe14B grains when the magnet is annealed below 640 °C, do not act as pinning centers. Phase analysis and diffusion profiles of the Dy and Ga concentration within the grains are made using electron probe micro-analysis. This shows that Ga forms Nd3Ga2 and Nd6Fe12.7Ga1.3 as intergranular phases. Its concentration within the Φ phase is significantly lower than in the Φ phase of single-powder magnets. At 1090 °C, a diffusion coefficient for Ga of D=2.5±0.1×10−15 m2/s is found. Dy is shown only to be present in that part of the Nd2Fe14B grain which has precipitated from the liquid during sintering. At the boundary of the Dy-free center and the outer part of the grain, an increased Dy concentration is found. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We studied the effects of phosphorus (P) and light on the physiological and morphological components of growth of young tomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Capita). The importance of dry-mass partitioning and starch accumulation in explaining the effects of P limitation on growth was examined more closely. Plants were grown at a wide range of exponential P supply rates (between 70 and 320 mg g−1 d−1) and one free-access treatment (1 mm). Two light levels (70 and 300 µmol m−2 s−1) were applied. Growth response coefficients (GRCs) were calculated to address the importance of different growth parameters in explaining relative growth rate (RGR). At both light levels, net assimilation rate (NAR) was more important than leaf area ratio (LAR) in explaining the effects of P on growth as indicated by GRCs. At less severe P limitation, LAR became more important and NAR less important. Dry-mass partitioning to both roots and leaves played a minor role in determining the effects of P limitation on growth as indicated by low GRCs. The increase in starch at mild P limitation showed that the assimilate supply was not limiting. At severe P limitation, the rate of photosynthesis was decreased, as suggested by the decrease in starch accumulation.
