Notes: Summary In sand-filled river channels in arid parts of South West Africa it is of importance to find methods of locating the rock surface under the sand, for purposes of water supply. This paper describes preliminary investigations in three such river beds, to test the applicability to this problem of the seismic refraction method, using the hammer-electronic seismic instrument previously developed by one of the writers for shallow refraction work. Both the method in general, and the instrument in particular, proved satisfactory. Examples are given of travel-time diagrams, interpretation is discussed, and channel profiles deduced from the work are shown. Depths ranged from a few feet to a few tens of feet. At two of the three sites, variations in velocity in the sand made standard calculations of dip and depth from two-way shooting inapplicable. In such situations depth could still be estimated reasonably reliably near the origin of the traverse. There was evidence of a superficial layer in which the velocity was less than that of sound in air.

Notes: Electric currents induced in the Earth are concentrated, in many places, in rocks of anomalously high conductivity, which may have a locally elongated shape. If the currents in such a current channel close beyond the bounds of an area of observation, such as is provided by an array of magnetometers, we call them channelled currents. The presence of such currents can cause severe problems in the interpretation of magnetovariation fields. To identify current channels, which may carry channelled currents, we construct a data matrix with elements H(j, ω) where j indicates position and spatial component of the magnetovariation field and ω is frequency. If the fields are due to a single current channel, then the data matrix has the form of an outer product and H = uv†, where u is a real vector with components u(j), and v is a complex vector with components v(ω). This corresponds to the case where Re(HH†) has only one non-zero eigenvalue. Consequently the eigenvectors of the matrix Re(HH†) can be used to test for current channels. We also determine estimators for u and v based on a least-squares criterion. These estimators can be used to construct the three components of the magnetic fields of current channels over a two-dimensional surface. The efficacy of the method is illustrated by analysing data from a magnetometer array in western Canada. The analysis shows that the total and internal parts of the magnetovariation fields are dominated by currents in a single channel, whereas the external fields are not. As the current channel crosses the array it very probably carries channelled currents in the sense of this paper.

Notes: iA detailed study has been made of the remanent magnetization of five Pilansberg dykes, by means of measurements on oriented specimens of the rocks. Outcrops of the dykes prove to have suffered magnetic disturbance of their original thermo-remanent magnetization. Specimens from depths of a few thousand feet, taken in Witwatersrand gold mines, show highly consistent magnetisation of the basic parts of the dykes over considerable distances between sampling sites. The mean directions given by the five dykes agree well, and the mean direction from the five dykes gives a North-seeking magnetic pole with inclination +69.3 and azimuth N 24° E. Assuming thermo-remanent magnetisation by a geocentric dipole field, this places a North magnetic pole in latitude 71/2° N, longitude 421/ E at the time of intrusion of the dykes. The age of the dykes is uncertain, but is probably about 300 to 400 million years. Some of the specimens have been subjected to alternating magnetic fields in order to test the stability of their magnetisations. The basic specimens are found to be highly stable, being only slightly affected by fields of 100 to 300 oersteds. The possible implications of the results are discussed, in terms of hypotheses of polar wandering and continental drift.

Notes: [Auszug] SOON after the publication of Prof. P. M. S. Blackett's paper1, Dr. E. C. Bullard suggested to us that it should be possible to test Blackett's theory against other theories by measurements of the magnetic field of the earth in the mines of the Witwaters-rand. Notes: [Auszug] In the development of plate dynamics there are two fundamental questions. First, do the plates slide over a passive asthenosphere, or are they driven by a convecting upper mantle? Second, are all ocean ridges passive, pull-apart plate margins, or do some lie above upcurrents in the mantle and in ...

Notes: [Auszug] The orientation of the stress tensor in the Earth's crust within a tectonic plate largely reflects the forces acting on that plate. At depths of 10 km or less one principal stress is usually nearly normal to the Earth's free surface and so nearly vertical. The magnitude of this vertical principal ...
