    Notes: Abstract An investigation of the crustal response in the time and frequency domains is presented to show that for models with similar crustal transit times of P and S waves, any important changes in the internal configuration of the crust such as layering, layer thickness and velocity contrast only influence the amplitudes of the transfer function ratio. Frequency positions of peaks and troughs remain unperturbed unless the total transit time of P and/or S waves through the crust are varied. This would imply that fine crustal structure derived from a matching of peak positions of observed spectral ratios with theoretical transfer function ratios, as is commonly practiced, is not very meaningful. This limitation in the application of the spectral ratio method for detailed crustal structure is demonstrated using two recent applications of this technique.

    Notes: Summary. Motion by (weighted) mean curvature is a geometric evolution law for surfaces, representing steepest descent with respect to (an)isotropic surface energy. It has been proposed that this motion could be computed by solving the analogous evolution law using a ``crystalline'' approximation to the surface energy. We present the first convergence analysis for a numerical scheme of this type. Our treatment is restricted to one dimensional surfaces (curves in the plane) which are graphs. In this context, the scheme amounts to a new algorithm for solving quasilinear parabolic equations in one space dimension.

    Notes: In modern exploration for hydrocarbons there is a great emphasis on the location of stratigraphic traps and estimation of lithologic information like sand-shale ratios from seismic data. In order to investigate the possibilities of success in this endeavour we have studied the synthetic seismograms for wave form and spectral characteristic for four basic sedimentation models: (I) interbedded sand-shale model representing the sediments of generally fluviatile origin, (2) interbedded coal-shale model representing deltaic deposits, (3) sedimentary models representing transgression and regression of shore lines, and (4) a basal sand model. The results have shown that for the first two models a change in the sand-shale or coal-shale ratio results in a characteristically different seismogram. The nature of the seismogram, however, is also strongly dependent on how the sand-shale or coal shale layers are arranged to ultimately give the same number of total layers, thus implying the same coal-shale or sand-shale ratios. The transgression, regression, and basal sand models also produce characteristically different seismic signatures. The spectra of these seismograms show attendant characteristic changes. However, it seems that in the case of real data which are disturbed by noise and the effects of overlying layers these characteristic features may not always be distinguishable.

    Notes: We analyze the effects of disorder on the magnetic properties of two manganeseporphyrins, [MnTPP][TCNE]⋅x(o-DCB) and [MnTPP][TCNE]⋅y(o-Xy) and (TPP=meso-tetraphenylporphyrinato, TCNE=tetracyanoethylene, o-Xy=o-xylene, o-DCB=o-dichlorobenzene, x≤3, y≤1). We present data for the in- and out-of-phase ac susceptibility and obtain the distribution of relaxation times using Cole–Cole analysis. The frequency dependence of the linear susceptibility suggests cluster glasslike behavior. The peak in the second harmonic of the ac susceptibility indicates the presence of a spontaneous magnetic moment. We propose that the unusual magnetic properties of these compounds reflect one-dimensional ferrimagnetic clusters interacting weakly through dipole-dipole interactions to form three-dimensional domains. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Regardless of the friction and wear conditions (friction without lubrication or with lubrication containing abrasive) the lattice constant of the heat treated cast iron decreases with increasing pressure and the lattice constant changes in the same way. 3. The more saturated the solid solution before the wear resistance tests, the greater the change in the lattice constant.

    Notes: Previous studies have shown the tendency for frictional heating to occur during articulation of total hip systems in vitro under simulated hip loading conditions. The magnitude of this heating is sufficient to accelerate wear, creep, and oxidation degradation of the UHMWPE bearing surface. It was shown that ceramic articulating systems generate less frictional heating than polished cobalt alloy against UHMWPE. This fricitonal heating is expected to occur primarily for younger, heavier, and more active patients. Thus, long-term performance of the articulating hip system in these patients may not be that predicted from current, body-temperature wear, creep, and degradation studies. Although the tendency to generate frictional heat has been observed only during in vitro simulated hip loading, a heat transfer analysis of this phenomenon is presented to evaluate the ability of the hip joint to dissipate such heating in vivo. Additional experiments were performed using controlled resistance heaters inside a cobalt femoral head to verify the calculated levels of frictional heat and to assess the heat dissipation under simulated in vivo conditions. The effect of blood perfusion on the effective thermal conductivity of the joint capsule is also discussed. The present study describes and analyzes the various heat dissipation mechanisms present both in vitro and in vivo during articulation of metal and ceramic hip systems. From these tests and analyses, it is concluded that frictional heating in the reconstructed hip cannot be effectively removed, and that degredative elevated temperature processes can be expected to occur in vivo to both the UHMWPE and adjacent tissue under extended periods of excessive patient activity. This is particularly true for metal cobalt alloy femoral heads articulating on UHMWPE versus ceramic heads which generate significantly lower levels of heat.

    Description: Consumer reviews on the web have rapidly become an important information source through which consumers can share their experiences and opinions about products and services. It is a form of text-based communication that provides new possibilities and opens vast perspectives in terms of marketing. Reading consumer reviews gives marketers an opportunity to eavesdrop on their own consumers. This paper examines consumer reviews of three different competitive automobile brands and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of each vehicle using text mining and association rule methods. The data were collected from an online resource for automotive information, Edmunds.com, with a scraping tool “ParseHub” and then processed in R software for statistical computing and graphics. The paper provides detailed insights into the superior and problematic sides of each brand and into consumers’ perceptions of automobiles and highlights differences between satisfied and unsatisfied groups regarding the best and worst features of the brands.
