Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Im österreichischen Anteil des Moldanubikums (Böhmische Masse) wurde eine Wolframvererzung entdeckt.
Notes: Abstract In the Moldanubicum (Bohemian Massif) of Austria a tungsten mineralization bound to calc-silicate rocks was discovered in the so-called Bunte Serie, a metasedimentary geologic unit now in amphibolite to higher amphibolite facies. The main constituents of the scheelite-bearing rocks are ferro-salite, meionite-rich scapolite, and quartz. The average tungsten content is estimated to be 1500 ppm; no further elements that would be characteristic for an exoskarn formation are enriched conspicuously. The whole series of calc-silicate rocks is intercalated in sillimanite gneisses. This series could be traced for about 5 km. The mineralization seems to be strata-bound — contacts with intrusive rocks were not observed. The field evidence is, therefore, easiest to reconcile with a synsedimentary origin, but the geology of the region is not known in sufficient detail to make this interpretation conclusive.

Notes: Abstract The Weinebene spodumene deposit is located in Carinthia, about 270 km southwest of Vienna. It is hosted by the medium- to high-grade metamorphic rocks of the Koralpe. The spodumene-bearing pegmatites form unzoned, dikelike bodies in eclogitic amphibolites and kyanite-bearing micaschists with concordant foliations. Their lateorogenic emplacement is probably of Variscan age. A younger, probably Alpine metamorphic event affected the pegmatites; it caused extensive recrystallization of the micaschist-hosted pegmatites, but had only a minor impact on the amphibolite-hosted ones. The spodumene-bearing pegmatites have been traced over a length of 1.5 km along strike and to about 450 m down dip. Their average thickness is 2 m, with a maximum of 5.5 m. Emplacement of the pegmatites caused an alteration halo of several dm in the hosting amphibolites, characterized by biotitization and formation of holmquistite. An aplitic spodumene-free seam of about 10 cm symmetrically borders the pegmatites. No contact phenomena are observed along the micaschist-hosted dikes. Spodumene is the only lithium-bearing mineral. Its average content is 22 vol% (equivalent to 1.68 wt% Li2O) in the amphibolite-hosted pegmatites and 15 vol% (equivalent to 1.13 wt% Li2O) in the micaschist-hosted dikes. Such a significant difference is also shown by rubidium (1,100 ppm vs 880 ppm) and cesium (60 ppm vs 25 ppm). Beryllium and tin are the only other significant trace elements. They show average contents of about 100 ppm and 120 ppm, respectively, with maxima of 1,690 ppm beryllium and 1,500 ppm tin. No correlation is found between lithium, tin, and beryllium. Niobium and tantalum are very low. A Na/K ratio of 1.2 emphasizes the predominance of albite over microcline. There is no discernable correlation between spodumene and albite contents, or between lithium and any other alkalies. The average K/Rb ratio is 20, pointing to the high degree of fractionation. Spodumene contains 7.4% Li2O and 0.45% FeO. There is no difference in the spodumene chemistry between the amphibolite-hosted and the micaschist-hosted pegmatites. Strong structural and textural evidence, mineral zoning, bulk composition corresponding to thermal minima in relevant experimental systems, and trace-element signature support an igneous derivation of the pegmatites. However, no granitic intrusion is exposed in the area, and the pegmatites could have been displaced from their source by tectonic events.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The socalled “Villacher Granit” is gneissic over its whole distribution. It is said to be an orthogneiss based on the following arguments: 1. High Rb-concentration, low K/Rb ratio (∼110); Rb/Sr ratio ∼12. 2. High fluorine concentration (1680 ppm–2700 ppm), formation of fluorite. 3. Formation of beryl. The cristallization of the primary granitic melt took place at ap H 2 O between 2 and 3 kb (depth 7 to 10,5 km). The HF-content of the vapor phase indicates a melting temperature of approximately 620°C. The alkalifeldspars shows low triclinicity (0.61–0,71). The rock complex contains primary garnet. The later metamorphism gave rise to the formation of phengitic micas, to recrystallization of the plagioclases, to the formation of fleckenperthite and checkered albite, to the exchange of the Rb between the alaklifeldspars and the growing micas as well as to the mobilization of F during the metamorphic event. The granite is of caledonien age (Rb−Sr whole rock age 409±32 ma,E. Jäger, pers. comm.), the metamorphic event of early alpine age (84±3 ma, same author). The bedrocks consist of garnet mica schists with occasional staurolite. Diaphthoritic phenomena within the schists are contemporaneous with the gneissification of the granite. The early-Alpine metamorphic event can be estimated as having had a temperature slightly above 400°C and a pressure greater than 4 kb.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Titan-Ferrocolumbit ist ein seltenes Akzessorium in den Spodumenpegmatiten der Weinebene, Kärnten, Österreich.
Notes: Summary Titanian ferrocolumbite is a rare accessory mineral in the spodumene-bearing pegmatites at Weinebene, Carinthia, Austria. It contains abundant exsolved niobian rutile and scarce inclusions of cassiterite that may be primary. The titanian ferrocolumbite is relatively homogeneous with Mn/(Mn + Fe) 0.24–0.33, Ta/(Ta + Nb) 0.09–0.13 (atomic ratios) and 0.47–0.88 Ti per 12 cations (2.7–5.0 wt.% TiO2). Natural specimens are considerably disordered but become more ordered on heating. Niobian rutile has Mn/(Mn + Fe) 0.00–0.04 and Ta/(Ta + Nb) 0.26–0.38; it concentrates Fe, Ta, Ti and Sn relative to the Mn- and Nb-enriched ferrocolumbite. The overall scarcity of Nb, Ta-oxide minerals in the spodumene-bearing pegmatites of southern Ostalpen conforms to their general features ranking them with the albite-spodumene type of rare-element pegmatites.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Eine gediegen Arsen – Realgar Vererzung in Marmorender Saualpe, Kärnten, Österreich Der “Geochemische Atlas der Republik Österreich” zeigt in Bachsedimenten der Saualpe, östliches Kärnten, Österreich, eine bemerkenswerte positive geochemische Arsenanomlie.
Notes: Summary The “Geochemical Atlas of Austria” shows a notable positive geochemical arsenic anomaly in stream sediments of the Saualpe, eastern Carinthia, Austria. Detailed investigation has shown that it is caused by an unusual kind of mineralization in brecciated marbles. The mineralization consists predominantly of native arsenic (often in small, stellate aggregates) and realgar (± minor orpiment). The As content may reach as much as 1.4 wt-%. The samples investigated do not contain any sulfarsenides and arsenides, and do not show enrichments of other metals: e.g. gold contents are 〈 5 ppb, Hg contents ≤ 1.3 ppm, Sb contents ≤ 4 ppm. The atomic As/S ratio varies considerably, and surpasses in a number of samples a value of 2. The As mineralization seems to be associated with the formation of late, extremely fine-grained quartz ± carbonate, penetrating the breccia, and is evidently a very late event in the mineralization history of the region.
