    Notes: Abstract Approximately 200 upper mantle xenoliths from Summit Lake, near Prince George, British Columbia, were collected from a basanitoid flow of Late Cenozoic (possibly post-glacial) age. The most abundant xenolith is spinel lherzolite (55%), with subordinate wehrlite (22%), clinopyroxenite (10%), olivine websterite (10%), websterite (2%) and dunite (1%). Xenoliths have granular textures and both green chrome diopside-bearing and black aluminous augitebearing xenoliths are present. About 5% of the xenoliths are banded on a cm scale, suggesting that the upper mantle beneath north-central British Columbia is heterogeneous on a scale of cm to meters. Microprobe data on the mineral phases indicate that the xenoliths are generally well equilibrated. Typically in spinel lherzolite, olivines are Fo89, orthopyroxenes are En90 and chrome diopside is Wo45En50Fs5. Spinels vary in composition from xenolith to xenolith. The evidence for partial melting observed in five xenoliths, may be due to heating during incorporation of the xenoliths within the host magma or to instability caused by decompression as the xenoliths are transported to the surface. Using element partition geothermometers, equilibration temperatures are calculated to be between 1080–1100° C. Pressures, estimated from a Cordilleran geotherm, are between 18–20 kbar. These temperatures are somewhat higher than estimates from xenoliths from other localities in Late Cenozoic alkali basalts in south and central British Columbia. It is concluded, therefore, that either the Summit Lake suite represents samples from a deeper source region in the upper mantle or the Late Cenozoic geotherm varied in time and space.

    Notes: Abstract A basanitoid flow of Miocene age, exposed near the West Kettle River, 25 km southeast of Kelowna, British Columbia, contains abundant ultramafic and mafic nodules. The subangular nodules are 1–20 cm across and typically show granular textures. A study of 250 nodules indicates that spinel lherzolite (∼60%) is the dominant type with subordinate olivine websterite (∼10%), websterite (∼7%), clinopyroxenite (∼4%), wehrlite (∼4%), pyroxene gabbro (∼4%), dunite (∼2%), harzburgite (∼1%) and granitic rocks (∼8%). Ultramafic nodules are of two types. Most of the wehrlites and clinopyroxenites belong to the black pyroxene (aluminous clinopyroxene) series, whereas the other clinopyroxene-bearing nodules belong to the green pyroxene (chromian diopside) series. Some spinel lherzolite nodules have distinctive pyroxene- and olivine-rich bands. Microprobe analyses of the constituent minerals of more than thirty nodules from the green pyroxene series indicate that grain to grain variations within individual nodules are small even when banding is present. Olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and spinel in spinel lherzolite have average compositions of Fo90, En90, Wo47Fs5En48, Cr/(Cr+ Al+Fe3)=0.1 and Mg/(Mg+Fe2+)=0.8. Equilibration temperatures, which were calculated using the two pyroxene geothermometer of Wells (1977), range between 920–980° C. Based on published phase stability experiments, pressures of equilibration are between 10–18 kbar. In summary, the upper mantle beneath southern British Columbia is dominated by spinel lherzolite but contains some banding on a scale of cm to meters. The temperature in the upper mantle is ∼950° C at a depth of 30–60 km.

    Notes: Abstract Because of the controversy over the nature of the parental magma for MORBs, experiments have been performed at 10 kbar in order to assess the effect of modal variations in the source peridotite and the effect of temperature (degree of partial melting) on the composition of partial melts. A peridotite-basalt sandwich method was used and a run duration of 72 h was found to be necessary to equilibrate basalt and peridotite. A range of melt compositions, coexisting with olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and spinel, was produced at 10 kbar, indicating that partial melting of peridotite cannot be regarded as isobarically pseudoinvariant. On projections in the normative tetrahedron OL-PL-CPX-SIL, the liquids obtained in this study define an area, rather than a point or narrow band. The compositions of some liquids in this study are similar to magnesian MORBs (MgO〉9.5 wt%), providing evidence in support of the derivation of magnesian MORBs by partial melting of mantle lherzolite at about 10 kbar.

    Description: Two types of serpentinized peridotites from Hole 670A of Leg 109 were studied in detail. A small piece of relatively unaltered sample, 109-670A-9R-1, #3 (22-24 cm), is olivine websterite characterized by aluminous chromian spinel with Cr/(Cr + Al) ratio of about 0.2. The other minerals have compositions essentially identical with those in more commonly observed serpentinized harzburgite like 109-670A-9R-01, #12 (94-97 cm). The occurrence of pyroxene-rich peridotite with normal harzburgite suggests that small scale heterogeneity in modal compositions exists in the upper mantle beneath the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Low Cr/Al ratios of spinel and pyroxenes of those peridotites indicate that they are relatively less refractory among peridotites ever recovered from the oceanic region. Textures and the estimated equilibration temperatures indicate that peridotites recovered from Hole 670A are recrystallized and reequilibrated at subsolidus temperature. The occurrence of serpentinized peridotites from the rift valley of the active mid-oceanic ridge may suggest that they represent direct exposure of upwelling mantle materials rather than serpentine diapirs.

    Description: The relatively fresh basement basaltic rocks cored at Sites 794 and 797 during ODP Legs 127 and 128 show compositional variations suggesting the following: (1) the aphyric rocks might be differentiated from compositional equivalents of the aphyric sample with the lowest FeO*/MgO (Sample 127-797C-12R-4, 35-37 cm); and (2) the plagioclase-phyric rocks (i.e., another constituent of the basement basaltic rocks from the sites) may be derivatives from the same parents; in this case, however, crystallized plagioclase was not effectively removed. Melting experiments were conducted for Sample 127-797C-12R-4, 35-37 cm, and the differentiation processes for the basement basaltic rocks were assessed. The high-pressure melting-phase relation can not account for the compositional variation of the aphyric rocks, suggesting that the variation was developed at relatively low pressure where olivine and plagioclase fractionation was followed by Ca-rich clinopyroxene fractionation. The density of Sample 127-797C-12R-4,35-37 cm, is comparable to that of plagioclase at some depth, but at still relatively low pressure, making it possible that the liquidus plagioclase was retained in the successive liquids to produce the plagioclase-phyric rocks. According to backtrack calculation assuming the olivine maximum fractionation, Sample 127-797C-12R-4, 35-37 cm, was differentiated from primary picritic high-Al basalt magma. The estimated primary magma composition was experimentally proved to coexist with harzburgite mantle at about 14 kbar, suggesting relatively shallow production (approximately 40-50 km below surface) of the rifting-related primary magma.

    Description: Sr and Nd isotopic compositions are reported for basaltic rocks collected during ODP Leg 127 from the Yamato Basin, a rifted backarc basin in the Japan Sea. The basalts are classified into two groups in terms of Nd isotopic composition: the upper sills at Site 797 are characterized by higher 143Nd/144Nd ratios (0.513083-0.513158, epsilon-Nd = 8.68-10.14) and the basalts from Site 794 and the lower sills at Site 797 have lower 143Nd/144Nd ratios (0.512684-0.512862, epsilon-Nd = 0.90-4.37). All of the basalts show higher Sr isotopic compositions than those of the mantle array, which is attributed to seawater alteration. The basalts with lower Nd isotopic values ranging in age from 20.6 to 17.3 Ma have tapped an enriched subcontinental upper mantle (SCUM) with the minor involvement of a depleted asthenospheric mantle (AM). Subsequent change in composition through the physical replacement of SCUM by AM yielded the basalts of the upper sills of higher Nd isotopic compositions. This event within the upper mantle was associated with the breakup of the overlying lithosphere during the rifting of the Japan Sea backarc basin.
