Description: Changes in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, which have the potential to drive societally-important climate impacts, have traditionally been linked to the strength of deep water formation in the subpolar North Atlantic. Yet there is neither clear observational evidence nor agreement among models about how changes in deep water formation influence overturning. Here, we use data from a trans-basin mooring array (OSNAP—Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program) to show that winter convection during 2014–2018 in the interior basin had minimal impact on density changes in the deep western boundary currents in the subpolar basins. Contrary to previous modeling studies, we find no discernable relationship between western boundary changes and subpolar overturning variability over the observational time scales. Our results require a reconsideration of the notion of deep western boundary changes representing overturning characteristics, with implications for constraining the source of overturning variability within and downstream of the subpolar region.

Notes: This paper introduces the active labour market policies or job search policies in the UK known as the New Deal, a major part of the Labour Government's package of welfare-to-work policies. Topics covered include estimates of their overall impact on employment; their limited effectiveness with disadvantaged job-seekers, including increasing numbers of inactive, but not formally unemployed, people; and debates about these policies in relation to skill needs and areas of job decline.

Notes: The article assembles efficiency and equity arguments for and against targeting the long-term unemployed in active labour market policies (ALMP), and refers to evidence from applications to date. The theory and practices of ALMP differ somewhat between low and high unemployment countries. The approach taken in Sweden in the 1960s to 1980s is used to discuss low unemployment countries, and OECD analysis in the 1990s to represent theory for the high unemployment countries. Targeting the long-term unemployed is specifically a policy for high unemployment countries, and depends particularly on effects on wage pressure. The article concludes by urging that equity arguments be considered as well as efficiency and by drawing attention to the form which targeting takes. Comments are made about Britain's New Deal in relation to the form of targeting.

Notes: Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) alevins move away from the redd predominantly at night time, suggesting that light level is the controlling factor releasing activity. However, the exact relationship between Light level and alevin activity is unknown, so a series of artificial redds was used to monitor alevin movements under various night time incident light levels. Five experimental redds and two controls were run over a period of 3 years. Combining the results gave a significant negative correlation between the numbers of salmon alevins moving away from redds on light nights and light level. This behaviour was interpreted as a negative photoresponse since the frequency of alevin movement away from the redd was dependent on the light intensity. Two possible explanations as to why alevins may react in this way to light level were considered. Firstly, the behaviour could have evolved to ensure that alevins only move away from the redd when they are least likely to be caught by a predator or secondly, retinal developmental differences between alevins could have led to the observed behaviour.

Notes: This article describes two small scale experiments designed to test whether variation in melanophore patterns could be used to identify individual juvenile salmonids that are too small for conventional marking methods. Three independent observers were able to identify 30 individual 0+ Atlantic salmon (Salmo solar) parr from photographs taken over an 8-week period with 100% accuracy, on the basis of patterns of melanophores in the region of the eye and jaw. Counts of the number of melanophores in two particularly variable regions of the head of 14 newly-emerged brown trout (Salmo trutta) from photographs of the same individuals taken on different occasions were strongly correlated. Eighty-four per cent of the fry were correctly identified on the basis of spot number alone, without any reference to their patterns. Thus a combination of the number and position of head melanophores can be used for recognition of relatively large samples of very young salmonids. Problems with, and potential applications of this method are discussed.

Notes: [Auszug] Calcitonin-gene-related peptide (CGRP) and adrenomedullin are related peptides with distinct pharmacological profiles. Here we show that a receptor with seven transmembrane domains, the calcitonin-receptor-like receptor (CRLR), can function as either a CGRP receptor or an adrenomedullin receptor, ...

Notes: Summary A hypervariable DNA marker is closely linked to one of the most severe forms of night blindness, X-linked retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Affected individuals with X-linked RP, obligate carriers, and ophthalmologically identifiable carriers of the disease were included in a linkage study. The diagnosis was established in five sibships by funduscopic and electrophysiological investigations. When the X-linked probe M27β was used, 2 recombinants out of 29 informative meioses were detected (θ=0.07 at a maximum lod of 4.75). The hypervariable probe detected two different alleles in 38 of 39 females tested. M27β is therefore a potentially very useful probe for carrier detection and prenatal diagnosis, as well as for addressing the question of heterogeneity of X-linked RP.

Notes: Summary Congenital stationary night blindness is characterized by disturbed or absent night vision that is always present at or shortly after birth and nonprogressive. The X-linked form of the disease (CSNBX; McKusick catalog no. 31050) differs from the autosomal types in that the former is frequently associated with myopia. X-chromosome-specific polymorphic DNA markers were used to carry out linkage analysis in three European families segregating for CSNBX. Close linkage without recombination was found between the disease locus and the anonymous locus DXS7, mapped to Xp11.3, assigning the mutation to the proximal short arm of the X chromosome. Linkage data obtained with markers flanking DXS7 provided further support for this localization of the gene locus. Thus, in addition to retinitis pigmentosa and Norrie disease, CSNBX represents the third well-known hereditary eye disease the locus of which is mapped on the proximal Xp and closely linked to DXS7.
