    Notes: Abstract A medium frequency partial-reflection spaced-antenna wind radar was installed at Scott Base (78S) on Ross Island, Antarctica, in November 1982. Results from this radar for the period December 1982 to October 1984 inclusive are compared with simultaneous measurements made with a similar radar at Christchurch (44S), N. Z. Monthly mean zonal winds measured at 80 km are compared with recent models for the Southern Hemisphere middle atmosphere. There is a general agreement with the models but there is evidence that the Christchurch winter flow was atypical in 1983.

    Notes: Abstract We report on the comparison of winds measured by a medium frequency (MF) radar near Christchurch, New Zealand, and by the high resolution doppler imager (HRDI). Previous comparisons have demonstrated that there can be significant differences in the winds obtained by the two techniques, and our results are no different. However, these data show relatively good agreement in the meridional direction, but large differences in the zonal direction, where the radar is regularly measuring the zonal wind as too easterly. To do the comparison, overpasses from the satellite must be obtained when it is close to the radar site. The radar data are averaged in time around the overpass because we know the radars sample phenomena which have spatial and temporal scales which make them invisible to HRDI. There are a limited number of overpass comparisons which limit our confidence in these results, but a detailed analysis of these data show that the proximity of the overpass is often an important factor in the differences obtained. Other factors examined include the influence of the local time of the overpass, and the amount of radar data averaged around the overpass time.

    Notes: Abstract A new method for evaluating momentum balance in the mesosphere using radar and satellite data is presented. This method is applied to radar wind data from two medium frequency installations (near Adelaide, Australia and Christchurch, New Zealand) and satellite temperature data from the Improved Stratospheric and Mesospheric Sounder (ISAMS). Because of limitations in data availability and vertical extent, the technique can only be applied to evaluate the momentum balance at 80 km above the radar sites for May 1992. The technique allows the calculation of the residual terms in the momentum balance which are usually attributed to the effects of breaking gravity waves. Although the results are inconclusive above Adelaide, this method produces values of zonal and meridional residual accelerations above Christchurch which are consistent with expectation. In both locations it is apparent that geostrophic balance is a poor approximation of reality. (This result is not dependent on a mismatch between the radar and satellite derived winds, but rather is inherent in the satellite data alone.) Despite significant caveats about data quality the technique appears robust and could be of use with data from future instruments.

    Notes: Summary An immediate correlation has been proved to exist between the vectorial photoelectric effect and electronic surface structure modified due to adsorption. Experimental studies were performed for Cs overlayers on W(110) and Si(111) faces using visible exciting photons with energies below those of both bulk and surface plasmons. Considerable (more than 20 fold) growth of the effect was observed forp-polarized light in the vicinity of threshold as the light frequency approached the position of the maximum of local density in the surface-state band. A special case of the vectorial photoelectric effect forp-polarized light has been found in the absence of bulk photoemission excited bys-polarized light. Our results prove that the anomalous vectorial photoelectric effect is caused by the normal electric vector component of thep-polarized light under appropriate conditions for the particular photoemission enhancement on the surface. The effect can be related to optical absorption by the surface-state band and to subsequent electron emission into the vacuum, the normal electric vector component of thep-polarized light being essential for both processes.

    Notes: The HF stretching band of the NO–HF open-shell complex has been recorded using a molecular-beam optothermal spectrometer. The spectrum exhibits P-type doubling indicative of an unpaired electron spin coupled to the rotational angular momentum of a bent complex with substantially quenched electron orbital angular momentum. From B¯‘=0.111 320(17) cm−1, and an off-axis angle for the NO of 30°, the zero-point center-of-mass separation is estimated to be 3.4396(3) A(ring). The HF frequency shift of 84 cm−1 indicates that the complex is hydrogen bonded, and the spectral intensities imply that the HF axis is aligned closely to the center-of-mass axis and the NO is off axis by 30±15°. The Renner–Teller-like orbital quenching parameter is somewhat larger than the spin–orbit constant in the free NO molecule and increases substantially upon vibrational excitation. The transitions in this band exhibit vibrational predissociation broadening of 200±40 MHz (FWHM), similar to that observed for a number of closed-shell hydrogen-bonded HF complexes.

    Notes: Microwave and infrared spectra of Ar–HCN have been obtained using an electric-resonance optothermal spectrometer. The microwave measurements extend to higher J the previous results of Leopold et al. and Klots et al., allowing the determination of higher-order centrifugal distortion constants for this quasilinear, highly nonrigid complex. A Padé approximant fit to the microwave data indicates a significant rotation-induced asymptotic increase in the zero-point center-of-mass separation between the Ar and the HCN, above that expected from pure radial distortion. This results from the large coupling between the angular and radial degrees in the intermolecular potential forcing the centrifugal alignment of the HCN. Infrared spectra are reported for the C–H streching fundamental ν1 and the combination band ν1+ν15, where ν5 is the van der Waals bending vibration. The band-origin difference between these two bands gives ν5=7.8 cm−1, in rough agreement with the 10 cm−1 harmonic value predicted from the microwave-determined nuclear quadrupole coupling constant. The complexation-induced red shift of the C–H stretching vibration is 2.69 cm−1 and the vibrational predissociation linewidths Γ are 〈10 MHz (FWHM). The vibrationally excited complex predissociates before striking the bolometer detector, implying that the predissociation lifetime τ〈1 ms.
