Description / Table of Contents:
Crystalline and amorphous primary products during the rusting of metallic iron in SO2 containing atmospheres at different moisture contentsThe interaction between the sulfur dioxide of the atmosphere and the moisture film on the metal may give rise to the successive formation of the following products: sulfurous acid, ferrous sulfite, ferrous sulfate and ferrous sulfide; further interactions are possible between these reaction products, so that ferric sulfate, iron disulfide and iron thiosulfate may be found, depending from the moisture content of the atmosphere (saturated and down to 77%). At 77% re. humidity the reactions come to a standstill at the FeS stage, while 50% rel. humidity no reaction can be observed.
Notes:
