Notes: Summary Cyanamide is extremely toxic to larvae ofLygaeonematus abietum Htg. but, under certain conditions, the nature of which is not understood, may cause browning of the needles. This substance is therefore considered unsuitable. Sodium silicofluoride is more toxic than barium silicofluoride. The former would be a suitable and inexpensive insecticide for this purpose if it were not that this substance, too, may cause browning of the needles. With powders containing DDT only preliminary experiments were carried out. Preparations containing pyrethrins showed promising results in the field and the laboratory; 0,025% of pyrethrins appeared sufficient to cause 100 % mortality; but as yet no control measures other than on an experimental scale have been carried out. More experience has been gained with derris powder. Laboratory and field experiments have shown that effective control may be obtained with a dust containing not less than 0,25 % of rotenone.

Notes: Summary In the fight against insects destructive to our forests, the need was felt to look for a carrier for insect-killing dusts, cheaper than the hitherto employed talcum. Ground dolomitic marl was found to have good qualities, and satisfied the practical demands. In 1941 however, freshly-made dolomite-derris dusts caused trouble. According to Dr.Spoon (vide p. 65) the alcaline properties of dolomitic marl are responsible for an impairment of the rotenone present in derrispowder. These facts led us to carry out some experiments on the properties of carriers. When biological tests yielded no clear results, some physical properties of the carriers were investigated as well.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Experiments were conducted to compare the effect of dieldrin films with dieldrin dropletresidues on the mortality of the grain weevil (Calandra granaria L.). It was shown that the time between exposure of the insects to the residues and the time of final reading must be at least 7 days. After the exposure the insects were kept at 20°C and given wheat. The differences in activity between dieldrin films and dropletresidues with the same amount of toxicans per cm2 are large when exposure time is one to three hours. At an exposure time of twenty hours differences are small. In experiments with different concentrations of insecticides in films the time of exposure must be one hour since a longer period decreases the differences between the rates. To test the density of the residues the time of exposure must be three hours. To estimate the activity of residues an exposure time of at least twenty hours is necessary. The mean error of the percentages kill of the observations in experiments with a short exposure time is a measure of the density of the dropletresidues. Dieldrin does not penetrate into the was layer of the plant. On glass and leaves of two different kinds of cabbage, the residues did not diminish in activity during 24 days.
