    Notes: : Chemical anesthesia (AQUI-STM Plus) was used to harvest tank-rested yellow-eye mullet (Aldrichetta forsteri) and snapper (Pagrus auratus) in a “rested” state. Fillets were stored at half the acclimated temperature under hyperbaric, hyperoxic conditions and compared with fillets stored under normobaric, hyperoxic conditions. Postmortem (PM) changes in white muscle (WM) cut-surface pH and key metabolites (lactate, adenosine triphosphate [ATP], and inorganic phosphate [Pi]) were measured. Hyperbaric, hyperoxic storage extended the pre-rigor period in the rested WM by delaying PM changes. Prolongation of pre-rigor was greatest in rested snapper WM. This was attributed to an extended period of aerobic metabolism in PM rested WM.

    Notes: This study was designed to investigate whether the blood of Pagothenia borchgrevinki, exhibits a Haldane effect, and whether activation of a Na+/H+ antiporter increases transport of intracellular protons and Bohr protons out of the erythrocytes resulting in inhibition of CO2 excretion in both P. borchgrevinki, and Dissostichus mawsoni. When carbon dioxide dissociation curves were determined from blood samples pooled from three fish under oxygenated and deoxygenated conditions a Haldane effect was observed. Using an in vitro, CO2 excretion assay, the rate of HCO3− dehydration was determined on blood and plasma equilibrated under an N2atmosphere then rapidly oxygenated with air in the presence of 10−5 M noradrenaline or acetazolamide (1004M). Whole blood and plasma from P. borchgrevinki, and D. mawsoni, were equilibrated with 0·5% CO2 in air and assayed in the presence of 10−5 M noradrenaline. Erythrocyte CO2 excretion rates were depressed significantly by noradrenaline in both species. The whole blood HCO3− dehydration rate was depressed significantly following rapid oxygenation in the presence of acetazolamide indicating that the pathway of CO2 excretion included activation of intracellular carbonic anhydrase and an adrenergic receptor.

    Notes: Gill Na+-K+-ATPase activities, haematocrits, condition factors, plasma osmolarities, cortisol, chloride and sodium concentrations were measured in sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) transferred rapidly from fresh water to sea water. Comparisons were made between salmon that successfully adapted to sea water and salmon that failed to adapt. In salmon that successfully adapted to sea water there was a brief but large fluctuation in cortisol, and plasma ionic concentrations rose initially but were regulated after 24–48 h. In salmon that failed to adapt to sea water, cortisol remained elevated, haematocrit increased, plasma ionic concentrations were not regulated and the salmon became severely dehydrated and eventually died. The results are discussed with respect to physiological stress and seawater adaptation.

    Notes: Summary Resting weight-specific oxygen consumption of the cryopelagic Antarctic nototheniid Pagothenia borchgrevinki at 0°C was 39.6 ml kg-1 · h-1 for a 50 g fish, with oxygen consumption being described by the regression equation: log10 VO2(ml/h)=−1.104+0.825 log10 Mb (g). These values are considerably below those raported by Wohlschlag (1964a,b). VO2 max. in forced swimming was described by the regression equation: log10 VO2 max = −0.507+0.823 log10 Mb. Despite low basal metabolism, factorial aerobic scope is similar to that reported for most other teleost fish, as is the cost of net transport. Myotomal muscles were used only at the highest swimming speeds and once they were recruited the fish fatigued rapidly. After swimming, oxygen debt was repaid rapidly, with a half-time of 20 min.

    Notes: Abstract The maximum power output of isolated perfused ventricles of the hafish (Eptatretus cirrhatus) averaged 0.367±0.031 mW g−1 (n=9), considerably high than estimates for the heart of the Atlantic hagfish (Myxine glutinosa). Maximal minute volumes averaged 21.55±1.28 ml min−1kg−1, with a mean stroke volume of 0.71±0.14 ml kg−1 body weight, values which are similar to those reported for many teleost and elasmobranch hearts. Ventricular output showed the characteristic dependence upon atrial filling pressure up to an optimum filling pressure ofc. 4 mm Hg. At output pressures exceeding 14 mm Hg the stroke volume and power output fell sharply. At these afterloads, the ventral aorta remained distended following semilunar valve closure and so the volume of fluid ejected on ventricular systole was reduced. There was little change in the frequency of the heart as either input or output pressures were varied.

    Notes: Abstract The Antarctic notothenioid, Pagothenia bernacchii, were found to have plasma total and free calcium levels, plasma inorganic phosphate and whole body calcium efflux rates which were similar to those seen in other teleosts. But total bone calcium was lower than reported for other teleosts. A single injection of vitamin D3 (5 ng g−1 fish) increased plasma total and plasma free calcium and these increases were associated with an increase in whole body calcium efflux and bone calcification. Conversely, the same treatment with 1,25-(OH)2-D3 reduced plasma free calcium. This seco-steroid also increased the specific activity of 45Ca in bone at 40h post-injection but did not significantly effect total bone calcium, plasma total calcium or whole body calcium efflux. 25-OH-D3 at the same dose had no effect on any of the parameters tested and none of the seco-steroids tested had any effect on plasma total inorganic phosphate. These data show that both D3 and 1,25-(OH)3-D3 can have calcitropic effects in this marine teleost and that these two forms of vitamin D can exert different effects within the same species.

    Notes: Abstract Two species of Antarctic fish were stressed by moving them from seawater at −1 °C to seawater at 10 °C and holding them for a period of 10 min. The active cryopelagic species Pagothenia borchgrevinki maintained heart rate while in the benthic species Trematomus bernacchii there was an increase in heart rate. Blood pressure did not change in either species. Both species released catecholamines into the circulation as a consequence of the stress. P. borchgrevinki released the greater amounts, having mean plasma concentrations of 177 ± 54 nmol · l−1 noradrenaline and 263 ± 131 nmol · l−1 adrenaline at 10 min. Plasma noradrenaline concentrations rose to 47 ± 14 nmol · l−1 and adrenaline to 73 ± 28 nmol · l−1 in T. bernacchii. Blood from P. borchgrevinki was tonometered in the presence of isoprenaline. A fall in extracellular pH suggests the presence of a Na+/H+ antiporter on the red cell membrane, the first demonstration of this in an Antarctic fish. Treatment with the β-adrenergic antagonist drug sotalol inhibited swelling of red blood cells taken from temperature-stressed P. borchgrevinki, suggesting that the antiporter responds to endogenous catecholamines.
