Notes: [Auszug] The relationship between species diversity and ecosystem functioning is a central topic in ecology today. Classical approaches to studying ecosystem responses to nutrient enrichment have considered linear food chains. To what extent ecosystem structure, that is, the network of species ...

Notes: Abstract Algal populations of a High Veld stream are examined against the background of mineral and acid pollution derived from sand-dumps and slimes-dams consequent on the gold-mining industry of the Witwatersrand. A rich flora of filamentous Conjugales, desmids and diatoms is found in the originating springs of the Witwatersrand Quartzites. Pollution from sand-dumps raises ionic content and pH and results in the production of only a few tolerant species of diatoms and unicellular chlorophytes which may occur in high numbers. Pollution from slimes-dams is lethal to life in the water, this is thought to be because of very low pH and very high ionic content, to these is added the mass of lifeless ever moving sand which makes up the stream beds. Recovery is initiated by a rise in pH which is brought about by: dilution due to influent water; the lithology of the stream bed changing to that of dolomite limestone and the complete covering of the upper middle reaches by the immense growth of Phragmites communis and other semi-aquatics, this, by slowing down the flow of water, enables neutralisation and other chemical interactions to take place, sedimentation to be increased and bacterial activity to take place. Pioneer aquatics such as Potamogeton pusillus L. play an important part in creating a micro habitat in which algae can develop. Turbidity at the mouth again prevents the development of algal populations.

Notes: Abstract Diatom associations formed by 2% or more of species, found by the Thomasson analysis method, are discussed in relation to the physical and chemical vicissitudes of a stream in which the head waters become cut off from those of the middle reaches by a barren zone caused by mineral and acid pollution from dumps resulting from the gold-mining industry on the Witwatersrand. Associations are found indicative of the originating waters, of regions of instability due to the pollution, whether it be its onset or recovery therefrom and of the lower recovered middle reaches. In each reach there are found to be associations indicative of pH, nitrogen content, dissolved oxygen and alkalinity. Thus the associations enable one to "read" the conditions of the river. An additional association occurs at the very turbid mouth of the river which is indicative of low light requirement. The work supports the findings of CHOLNOKY (1958 et seq.) in his researches into the diatom ecology of South African streams.

Description: The cladoceran herbivore Daphnia magna is a major consumer of phytoplankton in lakes. Therefore, this organism may control the phytoplankton community and the proliferation of some algae or cyanobacteria. Cladoceran behaviour and migration in relation to temperature, light or presence of planktivorous fishes have been well studied. In particular, it is known that the detection of kairomones produced by predators may induce avoidance. Avoidance could also occur with other semiochemicals such as cyanotoxins. In order to explore this hypothesis, we used an olfactometer to observe and measure the exploratory behaviour of D. magna individuals based on the motivation for food. Daphnids were allowed to choose between different compounds: water, a pure cyanotoxin, i.e. the microcystin-RR [(MC)-RR], extracts of one MC-producing strain (PMC 75.02) and one MC-free strain (PMC 87.02) of Planktothrix agardhii , or a green algae Scenedesmus obliquus . With this experimental design, we observed that i) cladocerans are able to detect resources with different qualities, ii) they can explore before exhibiting preferences, and iii) daphnids are able to avoid compounds that are potentially toxic ( e.g., microcystins). First, daphnids explored the environment, subsequently (after about 1.5 h), they showed a significant tendency to stay where there is a profitable resource such as S. obliquus . These results also suggest that specimens of D. magna cannot detect MC compounds from P. agardhii , but they respond to it as a food resource. The study of zooplankton ability to explore the environment when exposed to semiochemicals needs further investigation .
