Notes: Abstract The cross sections for the reactions N14(n, α)B11 and N14(n, t)C12 have been measured in the neutron energy range 4.0 to 6.4 MeV and at 2.5 MeV. Mono-energetic neutrons were produced in the D(d, n) He3 reaction using a gas target. The (n, α) and (n, t) disintegrations were detected in a gridded ionization chamber filled with an argonnitrogen mixture. The response of the chamber under different operation conditions is described. The excitation functions, measured with a neutron energy resolution of 40 to 50 keV, are given for theα 0 group from the N14(n,α)B11 reaction over the entire neutron energy range and for theα 1 group and the t0 group from N14(n, t) C12 for neutron energies above 4.3 and 5.6 MeV, respectively.

Notes: Abstract With calibrated Ge(Li) detectors, γ-γ coincidences have been observed in the decay of249Cf. The total conversion coefficient of the 54.7 and 66.7 keV transitions in the first rotational band have been determined to be 237±30 and 69±15, respectively. The branching ratio of the 121.5keV crossover transition is (22±7)%. The errors are the 2σ statistical uncertainties, linearily added to the errors in the detector efficiencies.

Notes: Abstract With calibrated Ge(Li) x-ray detectorsK x rays in the conversion of the 30 keV isomeric transition in the decay of108mAg were observed in coincidence with 79 keV γ-rays. Thus, the fraction of 30 keV transitions which take place byK conversion was measured to be (2.44±0.23) × 10−2. Making use of a theoretical total conversion coefficient (K conversion contributes only a minor part of the total conversion coefficient), an experimental value of theK-conversion coefficient was obtained, αK=(1.07 ± 0.10) × 104 (where the error represents twice the standard deviation to which the error in the detector efficiency has been added linearly). This value agrees with the theory of Hager and Seltzer forM4 conversion. The energy of the cascading γ-ray was remeasured to be 79.20 ± 0.05 keV.

Notes: Abstract The total transition probabilityf 23 for theL 2-L 3 Coster-Kronig transition probability atZ=80, 81, 82, and 92 was measured withL α x-ray coincidences between high resolution Si(Li) and Ge(HP) x-ray detectors and a dual-parameter multichannel coincidence system. TheL α gating technique for observing theK x-ray coincidence spectrum was carefully checked and found to be equivalent to the method of observing theL x-ray spectrum with $$K_{\alpha _{1,2} } $$ gates, when proper corrections are applied. The values off 23 found are 0.123±0.012, 0.109±0.011, 0.105±0.011, and 0.146±0.018 atZ=80, 81, 82, and 92, respectively. These values, together with all previously published values in the region 57≦Z≦96, are critically evaluated and a group of “best values” selected for comparison with theory. The agreement is quite good in the region 63≦Z≦83. The independentparticle model employing a Green-Sellin-Zachor potential used by Chen and Crasemann predicts values off 23 which are too large compared with experiment in the high-Z region, whereas the theoretical predictions of McGuire using an approximate Herman-Skilman potential are too low. However, the screened nonrelativistic hydrogenic results of Chen, Crasemann, and Kostroun are in satisfactory agreement with the experiments. The experimental result atZ=92 indicates that theL 2-L 3 M 4 transition is at or below threshold and contributes little or no intensity to the value of f23.

Notes: Abstract TheK conversion coefficient of the 135.5 keVM4 transition in193m pt has been determined by the XPG method. The result isα K =135.2±10.5 and the value exhibits a deviation 3.4% below the theoretical prediction of Hager and Seltzer. Similar deviations have been systematically observed in precision values ofE3 andM4 conversion coefficients reported in the literature.

Notes: Abstract 136Pm and136Nd were studied using theβ decay of136Sm and136Pm. The radioactive nuclei were produced by the92Mo (48Ti,xpyn) and112Sn (28Si,xpyn) reactions. The UNISOR isotope separator enabled mass identification. The previously unknown level scheme of136Pm was constructed and the half-life of136Sm was determined to be 47±2 s. Six new levels and thirteen newγ-ray transitions have been added to the level scheme of136Nd.

Notes: Abstract High resolution Si(Li)-Si(Li) and Si(Li)-Ge(Li) detector arrangements have been used to studyL x-ray spectra in coincidence withL-shell internal conversion electrons, gamma rays, andK x-rays emitted in249Cf decay. TheL 1 subshell fluorescence and Coster-Kronig yields determined forZ=96 from these spectra are ω1=0.25±0.06,f 12≦0.10, andf 13=0.69 ±0.08. The presence of theL 1-L 3 radiative transition is also further confirmed in this work.

    Notes: Abstract Accurate intensity measurements of the majorK x-ray groups have been performed with high resolution Ge(Li) detectors in singles and coincidence arrangements and with a high-purity Ge detector of the intrinsic type. Previously reportedK x-ray intensities forZ=96 are in error due to the presence of a 121.5 keV γ-ray in the decay of249Cf. The present results are as follows: forZ=81,K α2/K α1=0.589±0.008, $$K_{\beta _1^\prime } /K_{\alpha ^1 } = 0.344 \pm 0.008, K_{\beta _2^\prime } /K_{\alpha _1 } = 0.102 \pm 0.004$$ , andK β/K α=0.281±0.006; forZ=92 $$K_{\alpha _2 } /K_{\alpha _1 } = 0.611 \pm 0.008,K_{\beta _1^\prime } /K_{\alpha _1 } = 0.365 \pm 0.008, K_{\beta _2^\prime } /K_{\alpha _1 } = 0.125 \pm 0.004$$ , andK β/K α=0.300±0.006; forZ=94, $$K_{\alpha _2 } /K_{\alpha _1 } = 0.610 \pm 0.008, K_{\beta _1^\prime } /K_{\alpha _1 } = 0.369 \pm 0.010, K_{\beta _2^\prime } /K_{\alpha _1 } = 0.127 \pm 0.004$$ , andK β/K α=0.308±0.008; and forZ=96, $$K_{\alpha _2 } /K_{\alpha _1 } = 0.627 \pm 0.008, K_{\beta _1^\prime } /K_{\alpha _1 } = 0.372 \pm 0.009, K_{\beta _2^\prime } /K_{\alpha _1 } = 0.133 \pm 0.005$$ , andK β/K α=0.310±0.008. The error limits are the 2σ statistical errors to which a systematic error in the detector efficiencies has been added linearly. The present results are compared with recent theoretical calculations.
