    Notes: Abstract An electron in front of a metal surface experiences an attractive force due to the induced image charge. Band gaps in the band structure can prevent a penetration into the metal along certain directions. The Coulomb-like potential supports bound states in front of the surface which correspond to a hydrogen atom in one dimension. These image states can be measured with high resolution by two-photon photoemission. The adsorption of metals modifies the states. If the electrons can penetrate into the metal, quantum-well states can develop corresponding to standing waves in the overlayer. Image states on small islands show the quantization effects due to the lateral localization. The spectroscopy of image states by two-photon photoemission permits the investigation of growth and morphology of deposited metal layers, a well as the illustration of fundamental quantum-mechanical effects.

    Notes: Abstract Any conventional soft x-ray appearance potential spectrometer may be converted to an isochromat spectrometer by placing an absorber foil of suitably chosen thickness in front of the x-ray detector. In the present work, we demonstrate the principle and work out in detail the properties of an aluminum absorption foil. Isochromats of a hafnium sample are compared to results obtained with a crystal x-ray spectrometer. Also, the equivalence of an isochromat and an SXAPS measurement at the same energy will be shown. The densities of unoccupied states as derived from the respective experiments are in pretty good agreement.

    Notes: Abstract The energy resolution of a VUV isochromat spectrometer employing the traditional energy selective Geiger counter can be significantly improved. The variance of the optical resolution function with the usual CaF2 entrance window is (240 meV)2. With SrF2 we obtain (113 meV)2 at room temperature and (73 meV)2 at 70°C. A direct confirmation of these data, which were derived from a moment analysis of the threshold behaviour of an Au isochromat is provided by a measurement of image potential states at Cu(001).

    Notes: Abstract Critical angles for shadowing in low-energy ion scattering spectroscopy are calculated in the momentum approximation for the Thomas-Fermi-Molière potential and the Ziegler-Biersack-Littmark potential. In the relevant parameter range the results can be fitted by a formula containing five constants depending on the potential only. For a fixed projectile-target combination at a given energy the distance dependence of the critical angle is described by a simple power law. The comparison of the calculated results with experimental data shows that the inclusion of the effect of thermal vibrations on the critical angles improves the agreement between calculations and experiment significantly.

    Notes: Abstract Bichromatic two-photon photoemission spectroscopy (Bi2PPES) leads to an increased signal-to-noise ratio compared to conventional two-photon photoemission spectroscopy and therefore allows the observation of the first four image potential states as well as a lineshape analysis with improved accuracy on Ag(100). The n=2 image state with a measured linewidth of 37 meV FWHM is the narrowest unoccupied structure measured on any solid surface so far. The intrinsic linewidths of the first two image states were determined as 21±4 meV and 5±5 meV, respectively, in reasonable agreement with theoretical calculations. Disordered adsorption of oxygen on Ag(100) leads to a linewidth broadening of the first and — to a lesser extent — of the second image potential state. A quantitative analysis of the broadening suggests that the underlying mechanism is lifetime shortening due to scattering of the image state electrons by the adsorbate atoms.

    Notes: Abstract We have recently introduced a new method for the inversion of autoconvolution integrals [1]. In this paper, we describe an improvement of the previous algorithm which results from the consequent use of cubical spline functions. The treatment given here is mathematically more consistent and offers better numerical stability than that given earlier. The method is applied to the deconvolution of the rather narrow NiL III appearance potential line. Problems of stability and error propagation are discussed in some detail.

    Notes: Abstract The complex electronic band structure of a one-dimensional solid is described using a one-dimensional scattering approach. The method yields the value of the wave function and its derivative between the atomic layers. These values can be matched at the surface to the corresponding values of the wave function on the vacuum side. The method is compared to the two-band approximation of the nearly free electron model. Advantages of the proposed scheme are the easy adaption for layered systems and alloys.

    Notes: Abstract We have performed a study of empty electronic bulk and surface states on the three low indexed copper surfaces employing momentum resolved inverse photoemission. The bulk electronic features may be well understood in the frame work of the bulk direct transition model using state of the art band structure calculations. Surface states of both, the crystal derived and the image potential induced type have been identified and were found to agree with previous work. Several radiative transitions into unoccupied bands were also investigated at elevated temperatures. Characteristic temperatures of an exponential attenuation law are distinctly different between surface and bulk transitions. However, no systematic behaviour of bulk transitions at different points of the Brillouin zone could be established.

    Notes: Abstract We investigate the influence of electron correlations on the temperature-dependence of the electronic structure of ferromagnetic bcc iron by use of a manybody evaluation of a generalized model of magnetism. The single-particle part of the model-Hamiltonian is taken from an LDA band structure calculation. The manybody interactions are described by only two parameters, an intraband Coulomb interactionU and an interband exchangeJ. WithU=1.8 eV andJ=0.2 eV the self-consistent model solution yields aT=0 moment of about 2.04 µB and a Curie-temperature of 1044K. Details of the magnetic behaviour of Fe can be traced back to a striking temperature variation of the quasiparticle density of states. A novel explanation for the experimentally-observed non-collapsing exchange splitting is demonstrated in terms of the temperature-dependent spectral density for wave-vectors near the Γ-point. Typical differences in the magnetic behaviour of Fe and Ni are worked out.
