Abstract: Nanofertilizers and nanopesticides increase crop efficiency because of a several-fold increase in the surface-to-volume ratio of nano-forms of nutrients and their suitability to foliar application. The potential agricultural benefits of these nanomaterials, their modes of action, and the fate of nanomaterials in the soil are all discussed. This book uses a multidisciplinary approach and highlights the expertise of the authors in the fields of materials science, nanotechnology, nanobiosensors, and agricultural research. It describes the details of nanoscale synthesis of materials for targeted delivery; in vitro, in vivo, and field trials experimentation; how to use digital technology for specific solutions including Big Data to create predictive mathematical modelling; along with the core knowledge of plant systems and their biosphere to improve crop yields. Also, the book discusses future perspectives and challenges of nanomaterials in agricultural applications. In summary, this book discusses agricultural nanobiotechnology with its main emphasis on understanding the interactions of nanoscale materials of pesticides and fertilizers. It also covers their application to improve the quality and increase crop yield with a minimum use of the active ingredients attached to the nanocarriers.

Abstract: Infrastructure that manages our water resources (such as, dams and reservoirs, irrigation systems, channels, navigation waterways, water and wastewater treatment facilities, storm drainage systems, urban water distribution and sanitation systems), are critical to all sectors of an economy. Realizing the importance of water infrastructures, efforts have already begun on understanding the sustainability and resilience of such systems under changing conditions expected in the future. The goal of this collected work is to raise awareness among civil engineers of the various implications of landscape change and non-climate drivers on the resilience of water management infrastructure. It identifies the knowledge gaps and then provides effective and complementary approaches to assimilate knowledge discovery on local (mesoscale)-to-regional landscape drivers to improve practices on design, operations and preservation of large water infrastructure systems.

Abstract: This book reviews the role of exosomes and extracellular vesicles in both normal and pathological conditions. It first explains isolation methods for exosomes, and analyzes their fine structure and biological functions. Further, it highlights exosomes’ role as the key regulator in embryonic-maternal communication, and in the pathogenesis of various diseases, including cancer and urogenital, infectious, and neurodegenerative diseases. Moreover, it reviews the latest advances in using stem-cell-derived exosomes as a cell-free strategy in regenerative medicine, as well as the potential of exosomal microRNA as a promising non-invasive biomarker and targetable factor in cancer diagnosis and treatment. Lastly, it explores the use of natural and synthetic exosomes as nano-vehicles for efficient drug delivery.

Abstract: Plant growth and development is closely dependent on the plant environment, including the wide-spread presence of organic and inorganic xenobiotics and pollutants. Currently, heavy metals are the most common inorganic environmental pollutants and they have pronounced effects and consequences not only for plants, but also for the ecosystem in which the plants form an integral component. It has been suggested that these contaminants accumulate in agricultural crops, thus entering the food chain and posing a significant health risk. Plants growing in polluted sites exhibit altered metabolism, reduced growth, and decreased biomass production. These pollutants adhere to plant roots and exert physical or chemical toxicity and subsequently cell death in plants. Yet, plants have developed various defence mechanisms to counteract the toxicity induced by heavy metals. Only detailed study of the processes and mechanisms would allow researchers and students to understand the interactions, responses, and adaptations of plants to these pollutants; however, there are several unresolved issues and challenges regarding the interaction and biological effects of heavy metals. Therefore, this volume provides relevant, state-of-the-art findings on environmental phytotoxicity and the mechanisms of such interactions at the cellular and molecular levels. This volume consists of chapters on relevant topics contributed by different experts or group of experts so as to make available a comprehensive treatise designed to provide an in-depth analysis of heavy metals phytotoxicity. This book may serve as a reference to scientists, researchers and students in the fields of toxicology, environmental toxicology, phytotoxicology, plant biology, plant physiology, plant biochemistry and plant molecular biology, and especially those interested in heavy metals toxicology.
