Notes: Abstract Major ion concentrations in 404 springs in carbonate strata were found to exhibit a wide range in sulfate values. Sulfate concentrations are often much larger than would be expected from the analysis of samples from surface outcrops. Springs in the Sierra Madre Oriental (Mexico), the Rocky Mountains Front Range (Canada), and the Peak District (England) show similarities in sulfate concentration and in spatial distribution. Springs with high sulfate concentrations are found close to base level and are thermal. Springs with low sulfate concentration are found at higher elevations above base level and are not thermal. There is a direct relationship between sulfate concentration and spring temperature, and an inverse relationship with discharge. The results from the three areas described support a model of local and regional flow patterns, with deep regional flow providing the warm sulfate-rich water. The initial fracture porosity development in these aquifers may owe as much to the removal of sulfur minerals as to the removal of carbonate minerals. High sulfate values are frequently found in carbonate aquifers, so this model may be of widespread applicability.

Notes: Abstract Effects of deforestation upon slopes in limestones and in volcanic rocks in the Benson River valley, northern Vancouver Island, have been investigated quantitatively. Postlogging soil erosion and vegetal regeneration success were assessed by measuring soil depth, percent bare rock and moss cover, and the numbers and diversity of trees, shrubs, and plants on 25 sampling sites, each containing ten measuring quadrats selected at random. Sixteen sites were on the Quatsino Formation, a well-karstified limestone, and nine on the Karmutsen Formation of basaltic lavas. Eight sites were of virgin forest, 16 were logged between 1970 and 1983, and one (on limestone) was logged in 1911. Both bedrock types were significantly affected by the cutting. There was greater loss of soil and an increase in bare rock on the limestones. Erosion was increased significantly by burning on the limestones but not on the volcanics. Within-group comparisons on the limestones determined that steeper slopes and harder burned areas suffered the most and are slowest to regenerate. Volume of timber on the 1911 site was 19 percent of that in similar uncut forest sites. It appears that complete recovery on the barren limestone slopes will require at least some centuries.

Notes: [Auszug] Each speleothem was oriented in the cave using mounts carrying a compass and a clinometer. The sample was cast in plaster of Paris in the laboratory where it was then sawn parallel and perpendicular to growth horizons, usually into 2-cm cubes. The procedure consisted of measuring the NRMs, carrying ...

Notes: [Auszug] A new karst style, labyrinth karst, is recognised in climates ranging from humid tropical to subarctic. In the late stages of evolution it is replaced by limestone towers indicating that tower karst is polygenetic, and not specific to the humid tropics as was once ...

Notes: [Auszug] The precipitates are restricted to the surfaces of limestone benches recently overrun by glaciers ("Neoglacial Advance1"). Glacier recession probably started about 100?200 yr ago, and is still taking place. The bench surfaces are scoured into a drumlinized micro-topography2 of 1?10 cm relief. The ...

Notes: [Auszug] LUNDBERG ET AL. REPLY-Winograd is right in saying that the alpha-count and mass spectrometric dates in Table Ib are not directly comparable. They were not intended to be; they show the superior resolution obtainable by mass spectrome-try in a time range where the resolution of alpha-count dates ...

Notes: [Auszug] Corals record only the highest sea stands; speleothem complement the coral record in that they record a much larger fraction of the total range of sea level. Coral has the advantages of high U content (approximately 3 p.p.m.), easy recognition of alteration of the primary aragonite to calcite, and ...

Notes: A series of 36 compounds of known structure was used in a study to elucidate the mechanism of separation of gel-permeation chromatography (GPC). The various molecular dimensions were defined and measured for these compounds. The elution volume for these compounds was determined by GPC under specified and controlled conditions. The relationships between elution volume and molecular dimension were investigated using computer-based statistical analysis for the entire set of compounds and manual simultaneous equations for smaller sets of compounds. It was found that, as increasingly more molecular dimensions are considered, (1) the importance of the maximum molecular dimension Ap′ (the only dimension considered by many investigators) significantly decreases and (2) a significantly better prediction of the elution volume of these compounds could be made.
