Notes: Summary The numerical analysis of multibody system dynamics is based on the equations of motion as differential-algebraic systems. A thorough analysis of the linearized equations and their solution theory leads to an equivalent system of ordinary differential equations which gives deeper insight into the derivation of integration schemes and into the stabilization approaches. The main tool is the Drazin inverse, a generalized matrix inverse, which preserves the eigenvalues. The results are illustrated by a realistic truck model. Finally, the approach is extended to the nonlinear index 2 formulation.

Notes: Summary The two most popular formulations of the equations of constrained mechanical motion, thedescriptor andstate-space forms, each have severe practical limitations. In this paper, we discuss and relate some proposed reformulations of the equations which have improved numerical properties.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Freeze etching technique in combination with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used in order to investigate the colloidal gel structures of the Emulsifying Wax DAB 8 and water containing Hydrophilic Ointment DAB 8. The different gel types (hydrophilic gel phase and cetylstearylalcohol-semihydrate-gel phase) could be represented by this technique. The resulting data were compared with those from other methods and were in good agreement. Pictures taken by TEM gave the clear confirmation of a structure model set up earlier for these systems.

Notes: Abstract We consider multistep discretizations, stabilized by β-blocking, for Euler-Lagrange DAEs of index 2. Thus we may use “nonstiff” multistep methods with an appropriate stabilizing difference correction applied to the Lagrangian multiplier term. We show that orderp =k + 1 can be achieved for the differential variables with orderp =k for the Lagrangian multiplier fork-step difference corrected BDF methods as well as for low orderk-step Adams-Moulton methods. This approach is related to the recently proposed “half-explicit” Runge-Kutta methods.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Für die Kompressionsgleichung (s − a) (p + b) = C wurden die drei Hyperbelkonstanten a, b, und C interpretiert und ihre Abhängigkeit vom Mischungsverhältnis zweier Substanzen untersucht.
Notes: Abstract The three hyperbolic constants a, b and C were interpreted for the compression equation (s − a) (p + b) = C. Their dependence upon the mixture ratio of two substances was investigated. The quantity b was designated as deformation strain, it can be related to the yield point of a material. The proportion of deformed drug in a tablet formulation can be estimated by means of the constant b.

Notes: To exploit the benefits of parallel computer architectures for multibody system simulation, an interdisciplinary approach has been pursued, combining knowledge of the three disciplines of dynamics, numerical mathematics and computer science. An analysis of the options available for the formulation and numerical solution of the dynamical system equations yielded a surprising result. A method initially proposed to solve the inverse problem of dynamics is the best choice to generate the system equations required for solving the simulation problem, when relying on implicit integration routines. Such routines have the particular advantage of handling stiff systems, too. The new O(N)-residual formalism, generating the system equations in a form required for implicit numerical integration, has a high potential to benefit from parallel computer architectures. Two strategies of medium and coarse grain parallelization have been implemented on a Transputer network to obtain a package for parallel multibody simulation. An analysis of the performance of this package demonstrates for typical multibody simulation problems that the new code is five times faster than existing codes when implemented on a serial computer. An additional speed-up by the same order of magnitude is obtained when the code is implemented on a Transputer network.
