Abstract Different methods of thermal analysis (TG/DTG, pressure- and cooling-DSC) were used for a comparative characterization of the thermal-oxidative stabilities and low-temperature behaviour of vegetable and mineral oil-based hydraulic fluids. The mineral oil-based hydraulic fluids proved to have markedly higher thermal-oxidative stabilities than those of the vegetable oils, but they were much less biodegradable.
