NMR study shows that cis-1,3 cyclobutanedicarboxylic acid has a gauche diequatorial conformation and trans-1,3 isomer has a gauche axial-equatorial conformation in aqueous solution. Raman and IR spectroscopy indicate that the cis-1,3 acid belongs to C2 symmetry; the monoanion and dianion cyclobutanedicarboxylates have Cs symmetry with orthogonal substituents. An assignment of fundamental vibrations is given.

Une étude par RMN montre que, en solution aqueuse, l'acide cyclobutanedicarboxylique-1,3-cis a une conformation gauche diéquatoriale, tandis que l'isomère trans a une conformation gauche axiale-équatoriale. L'analyse des spectres de polarisation Raman permet de retenir la symétrie C2 pour l'acide 1,3-cis; le monoanion et le dianion ont la symétrie Cs, les plans des deux substituants étant orthogonaux. Une attribution des fréquences de vibrations fondamentales est proposée pour chaque composé.
