Summary The first two GEBCO editions were issued by the scientific cabinet of Prince Albert I of Monaco. After the death of Prince Albert I, the International Hydrographic Bureau (IHB) in Monaco undertook to keep this chart of importance to oceanography up to date and issued the third edition. In view of the steadily increasing amount of soundings, the IHB was no longer in the position, for lack of personnel, to do this work for the fourth edition of GEBCO. It was therefore agreed at the VII International Hydrographic Conference, 1957, in Monaco to decentralize the preparation of the GEBCO material by producing so-called Plotting sheets, 1∶1,000,000. Seventeen out of forty IHB states members declared themselves ready to participate on a voluntary basis and committed themselves to produce the Plotting sheets of distinct areas. For the Federal Republic of Germany the Deutsches Hydrographisches Institut (DHI) accepted the production of 26 Plotting sheets for the two GEBCO sheets B I and B IV which totalled in the evaluation of more than 220,000 soundings. On the basis of this material the two sheets B I and B IV will probably be issued this year by the Institut Géographique National in Paris.

Résumé Les deux premières éditions de la GEBCO ont été publiées par le cabinet scientifique du Prince Albert 1er de Monaco. Après la mort du Prince le Bureau Hydrographique International (B.H.I.) a entrepris de tenir à jour cette collection de cartes si importantes pour l’Océanographie et à publié la troisième édition. Mais devant l’accroissement continu du nombre des sondages, le B.H.I., faute de personnel suffisant, se trouvait dans l’impossibilité de faire paraître la quatrième édition. Aussi, lors de la VII conférence Hydrographique Internationale de Monaco, en 1957, il fut décidé que l’on décentraliserait le travail préparatoire de la GEBCO qui consiste en l’établissement de «Plotting sheets» à l’échelle de 1/1000000. Sur les quarante états membres du B.H.I., dix sept se sont déclarés prêts à collaborer de plein gré et se sont engagés à établir les Plotting sheets de régions déterminées. Pour la République Fédérale Allemande le Deutsches Hydrographisches Institut s’est chargé de la réalisation de 26 Plotting sheets pour les deux feuilles B. I. et B. IV. de la GEBCO, ce qui a entraîné au total l’exploitation de plus de 220 000 sondes. Dès cette année probablement, les deux feuilles B. I. et B. IV., pourront, sur la base de cette documentation, être publiées par l’Institut Géographique National à Paris.

Zusammenfassung Die ersten beiden Ausgaben der GEBCO wurden durch das wissenschaftliche Kabinett des Fürsten Albert I von Monaco herausgegeben. Nach dem Tode von Fürst Albert I übernahm es das Internationale Hydrographische Büro (IHB) in Monaco, dieses für die Ozeanographie wichtige Kartenwerk auf dem laufenden zu halten und brachte die dritte Ausgabe heraus. Durch den immer größer werdenden Anfall von Lotungen konnte diese Arbeit für die vierte Ausgabe der GEBCO aus Personalmangel durch das IHB aber nicht mehr durchgeführt werden. Auf der VII. Internationalen Hydrographischen Konferenz in Monaco 1957 wurde daher eine Dezentralisation der Herstellung der Unterlagen für die GEBCO in Gestalt von sog. Plotting sheets 1∶1 Mio beschlossen. Siebzehn der vierzig Mitgliedstaaten des IHB erklärten sich zur freiwilligen Mitarbeit bereit und verpflichteten sich, die Plotting sheets von bestimmten Gebieten zu schaffen. Für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland übernahm das Deutsche Hydrographische Institut (DHI) die Herstellung von 26 Plotting sheets für die beiden GEBCO-Blätter B I und B IV, wobei insgesamt über 220 000 Lotungen verarbeitet wurden. Die beiden Blätter B I und B IV werden auf Grund dieses Materials voraussichtlich noch in diesem Jahr vom Institut Géographique National in Paris herausgegeben.
