    Description: A sixty-year history of Afro–South Asian musical collaborations. From Beyoncé’s South Asian music–inspired Super Bowl Halftime performance, to jazz artists like John and Alice Coltrane’s use of Indian song structures and spirituality in their work, to Jay-Z and Missy Elliott’s high-profile collaborations with diasporic South Asian artists such as the Panjabi MC and MIA, African American musicians have frequently engaged South Asian cultural productions in the development of Black music culture. Sounds from the Other Side traces such engagements through an interdisciplinary analysis of the political implications of African American musicians’ South Asian influence since the 1960s. Elliott H. Powell asks, what happens when we consider Black musicians’ South Asian sonic explorations as distinct from those of their white counterparts? He looks to Black musical genres of jazz, funk, and hip hop and examines the work of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Rick James, OutKast, Timbaland, Beyoncé, and others, showing how Afro–South Asian music in the United States is a dynamic, complex, and contradictory cultural site where comparative racialization, transformative gender and queer politics, and coalition politics intertwine. Powell situates this cultural history within larger global and domestic sociohistorical junctures that link African American and South Asian diasporic communities in the United States. The long historical arc of Afro–South Asian music in Sounds from the Other Side interprets such music-making activities as highly political endeavors, offering an essential conversation about cross-cultural musical exchanges between racially marginalized musicians.

    Notes: Abstract The equation $$\left\{ { - \Delta + |\psi (x)|^{2p - 2} - |x|^{ - 1} } \right\}\psi (x) = 0$$ in three dimensions is investigated. Uniqueness and other properties of the positive solution are proved for 3/2〈p〈2. There are two physical interpretations of this equation forp=5/3: (i) As the TFW equation for an infinite atomwithout electron repulsion; (ii) The positive solution, ψ, suitably scaled, is asymptotically equal to the solution of the TFW equation for an atom or moleculewith electron repulsion in the regime where the nuclear charges are large andx is close to one of the nuclei.

    Notes: Abstract We address the problem of whether there exists an external potential corresponding to a given equilibrium single particle density of a classical system. Results are established for both the canonical and grand canonical distributions. It is shown that for essentially all systems without hard core interactions, there is a unique external potential which produces any given density. The external potential is shown to be a continuous function of the density and, in certain cases, it is shown to be differentiable. As a consequence of the differentiability of the inverse map (which is established without reference to the hard core structure in the grand canonical ensemble), we prove the existence of the Ornstein-Zernike direct correlation function. A set of necessary, but not sufficient conditions for the solution of the inverse problem in systems with hard core interactions is derived.

    Notes: Abstract Ruelle has found upper bounds to the magnitude and to the number of non-negative characteristic exponents for the Navier-Stokes flow of an incompressible fluid in a domain Θ. The latter is particularly important because it yields an upper bound to the Hausdorff dimension of attracting sets. However, Ruelle's bound on the number has three deficiences: (i) it relies on some unproved conjectures about certain constants; (ii) it is valid only in dimensions ≧ 3 and not 2; (iii) it is valid only in the limit Θ → ∞. In this paper these deficiences are remedied and, in addition, the final constants in the inequality are improved.

    Notes: Summary Individual disopyramide clearance is not constant and previous studies have suggested that this may be time and/or concentration dependent. Steady state disopyramide concentrations were achieved in six volunteer subjects at each of three infusion rates. Drug analysis was by HPLC and protein binding was determined by ultrafiltration. The disopyramide free fraction was concentration dependent and marked interindividual variability was observed. Disopyramide clearance was independent of time but dependent on total plasma concentration. This can be completely explained by non-linear protein binding since free disopyramide clearance was observed to be independent of free concentration.

    Notes: Summary A limitation of clonidine therapy is the syndrome of rebound hypertension and sympathetic overactivity after withdrawal. Ten patients, four male, six female, aged 28–64 years, with essential hypertension, were treated for one year with an imidazoline derivative, tiamenidine. Blood pressure fell from an average of 178/108 mm Hg pretreatment to 152/86 mm Hg after 1 year. Tiamenidine was then withdrawn in hospital, replaced by identical placebo under single blind conditions and observations made over 96 h. The study was interrupted in five patients (4 patients within 36 h) because blood pressure rose to greater than 30 mm Hg (systolic) or greater than 20 mm Hg (diastolic) above pretreatment values. For the group, blood pressure was maximal at 194/112 mm Hg, 18 h post withdrawal, significantly higher than pretreatment (p〈0.005). Headache, tremor, flushing and insomnia were noted. Saliva production rose 100% at 24 h. Plasma noradrenaline rose within 24 h with an accompanying rise in urinary metanephrine and catecholamine excretion. Tiamenidine appears to share with other imidazolines rebound cardiovascular and autonomic effects following abrupt withdrawal.
