Abstract Electron energy loss spectroscopy has been performed with samples of pure C60 and C70 using primary electron energies between 10 and 1100 eV. The experimental data could be explained in terms of optically forbidden and allowed transitions, and by collective excitations (plasmons), which could be distinguished by their dependence on the energy of the primary electron.
