    Notes: Abstract The objective of this study was to determine if low secondary selection differentials, caused by selecting within full-sib families, may have accounted for the failure of an intended restricted selection index to reduce epididymal fat pad weight (EF) without changing body weight (BW) in mice. Replicate lines that had been selected within full-sib families for high (HE) or low (LE) EF, while holding BW constant, were crossed. After two generations of random mating, two replicates were sampled and selection initiated for the same restricted index criteria except that mass selection was used to increase the selection differentials. In both phases of selection the HE restricted index selection, designed to increase EF without altering BW, was in agreement with expectation. In contrast, the LE index, designed to decrease EF without changing BW, did not agree with theory since BW increased while EF decreased only slightly. Therefore, reduced selection differentials could not explain the deviation from theory. A possible explanation may reside in the restricted selection index being more sensitive to changes in genetic parameters due to shifts in gene frequency as a consequence of the selection applied. However, linkage disequilibrium and genetic drift can not be ruled out as contributing factors to the asymmetry of response.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of nitrogen (N) fertilizer on the production of a 6-year-old asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) crop was examined over 2 years by the application of 0, 50 or 100 kg N ha−1 as ammonium sulphate at three times; 1) prior to fern growth (9 months before harvest), 2) prior to harvest, or 3) early-harvest prior to the main period of spear production. The utilization of N fertilizer was examined by applying 15N-enriched ammonium sulphate to 2 m×2.5 m microplost within the 50 kg N ha−1 treatments. There was a 12% response in spear production to added N in the first harvest year only and there was no significant effect of rate or time of N application. Plant uptake of added 15N by the end of the first harvest period was 25, 11 and 4% of the total applied for the pre-fern, pre-harvest and early-harvest treatments respectively. About 60% of the 15N applied pre- or early-harvest remained in the soil at the end of the first harvest period. Most of the 15N in soil in the pre-harvest treatment occurred as inorganic N and had been leached into the 150–600 mm soil depth. In contrast, most of the 15N that remained in soil from the early-harvest application was in the 0–75 mm depth and 40% of this had been immobilized into organic N. In the short-term (less than one year), utilisation of 15N-labelled N fertilizer by asparagus was greatest when applied prior to fern growth. However, after 2 years there was no difference between treatments in 15N recovery in plant or soil. Thus, time of application of N fertilizer had no long-term effect on production or utilization of N fertilizer by asparagus.

    Notes: Starch xanthates with degrees of substitution (D.S.) ranging from 0.08 to 0.58 were reacted with high or low molecular weight polyethylenimine (PEI, two of six times the stoichiometric amount) to form starch poly(ethylenimino thiourethanes). Aqueous thiourethane solutions were mixed with commercial styrene-butadiene and acrylonitrile-butadiene latices, and the solids were coprecipitated by adding 1M ZnSO4 and 1N H2SO. The master batches (filtered, dried at 70°C), having 15 to 50 parts of starch (equivalent) per 100 parts of rubber (phr), were masticated and compounded in a sulfur-accelerator recipe and press cured to yield vulcanizates of improved physical characteristics compared to control vulcanizates. About 0.22 D.S. produced best results. With this D.S. xanthate and a 3.5 ratio of 100,000 MW PEI, a 25 phr starch loading gave maximum tensile strength (2720 psi) in a styrene-butadiene vulcanizate. Hardness generally increased with increasing D.S. and starch contents. The thiourethane decreased compression set and increased abrasion resistance. The former was lowest and the latter highest at ca. 0.20 D.S. and 25 phr starch. Both set and abrasion were lowest with thiourethane prepared from xanthate made in a “Roto-feed” process rather than a “Ko-Kneader” operation. Rebound was not appreciably changed, and increase of volume swelling in water was small upon thiourethane incorporation.

    Notes: Measurement of the rate of glucose diffusion from EUDGRAGIT RL and HEMA-MMA microcapsules coupled with a Thiele modulus/Biot number analysis of the glucose utilization rate suggests that pancreatic islets and CHO (Chinese hamster ovary) cells (at moderate to high cell densities) should not be adversely affected by the diffusion restrictions associated with these capsule membranes. The mass transfer coefficients for glucose at 20 °C were of the same order of magnitude for both capsules, based on release measurements: ∼5 × 10-6 cm/s for EUDRAGIT RL and ∼2 × 10-6 for HEMA-MMA. Inulin release from EUDRAGIT RL was slower than for glucose (mass transfer coefficient 14 ± 4 × 10-8 cm/s). The Thiele moduli were much less than 1, either for a single islet at the center of a capsule or CHO cells uniformly distributed throughout a capsule at 10-6 cells/ mL, so that diffusion restrictions within the cells in EUDRAGIT RL or 800 μm HEMA-MMA capsules should be negligible. The ratio of external to internal diffusion resistance (Biot number) was less than 1, so that at most, only a small diffusion effect on glucose utilization should be expected (i.e., the overall effectiveness factors were greater than 0.8). These calculations were consistent with experimental observation of encapsulated islet behavior but not fully with CHO cell behavior. Permeability restricted cell viability and growth is potentially a major limitation of encapsulated cells; further analysis is warranted.

    Notes: The reaction between polyacrolein bisulfite adduct and sodium starch xanthate in aqueous alkali gives a rapid viscosity increase and subsequent gelation. The magnitude and pattern of the viscosity development depend on the degree of substitution of the starch xanthates in the range of 0.12 to 0.45, varying from around 5000 cP centipoises (nongelling) for the lowest to more than 100 000 cP for the highest. The viscosity patterns developed with the more highly substituted xanthates show a minimum valley after a 20-30-min reaction. Analytical and spectral analyses of solid materials obtained from the ethanol precipitation of the gels indicate that the product is a monothiocarbonate stemming from the elimination of sodium hydrogen sulfide between a xanthate group of the starch and a hydroxyl group of the polyacrolein adduct. A hydrated form of polyacrolein does not react with starch xanthate under the same aqueous alkaline conditions.
