Notes:
A method for designing open gradient coils for magnetic resonance imaging using a simulated annealing optimization algorithm is described. The algorithm allows the current density toward the open end to be increased, compensating for the "missing" coil section. A semicylindrical transverse z gradient has been designed and built providing a gradient efficiency of 0.82 mT/m/A. The prototype provided good agreement with the theory over the central imaging region. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
