Notes: Abstract The structural gene for 5-aminolevulinate (ALA) synthase has been cloned and sequenced from the filamentous fungus Aspergillus nidulans using an oligonucleotide probe based on a highly conserved-amino-acid sequence found in ALA synthase genes of a wide range of species. The cloned gene, hemA, has a 5′ untranslated mRNA of 92 nucleotides (nt) and one intron (64 nt). The deduced protein sequence (648 amino acids) shows 64% identity to the yeast ALA synthase in the C-terminal region of 453 amino acids. The N-terminal region is typical of ALA synthase proteins in that the specific amino-acid sequence is not conserved but consists of a “leader” region rich in basic amino acids, believed to be involved in mitochondrial targeting, followed by a stretch of largely hydrophobic residues which may allow interaction with the inner mitochondrial membrane. Under the conditions used the transcription of hemA was unaffected by dextrose repression, heat shock, or oxygen levels.

Notes: Abstract The incommensurate phase of NaNO2 is known to contain a transverse displacement modulation in addition to the modulated ferroelectric ordering, but the phase and sign of the displacement was left undetermined by the X-ray structural analysis. We discuss the phase, sign and magnitude of the displacement modulation from several points of view and build up a more detailed picture of its origin than previously. Rigorous group theoretical arguments fix the phase as zero, in contrast to the assumption of some workers, and indicate other possible aspects of the structure. The sign of the displacement is found to be positive due to the dominance of electrostatic forces and O−O repulsion over O−Na repulsion. The magnitude of the displacement seen in molecular dynamics simulations and estimated from simple atom packing agree reasonably with the X-ray value. The results confirm the displacement modulation as the essential ingredient responsible for the existence of the incommensurate phase.

Notes: Abstract Although the signal-to-interference power ratio (SIR) based criterion for diversity reception has been highlighted in the literature as the most effective method for reducing the effects of cochannel interference, it is often not clear how to measure this parameter in a practical context. This work addresses the problem of finding a way to determine the level of interference (due to frequency reuse) from neighbouring cells in a mobile telephone system, with M-ary PSK modulated signals and fast fading channel. The proposed parameter measures the quality of the received signal corrupted by additive white noise and cochannel interference, for any number of interferers. It is also suitable for high bit rate transmission, as in indoor mobile radio systems, since the proposed method requires sampling the received signal at just one sample/symbol.

Notes: Abstract Concise mathematical models are established for one-dimensional, linear, periodically time-varying digital filters. The three representations considered include linear difference equations, Green's function, and state-space structures. Linear time-invariant equivalent descriptions are then formulated, and from these, for the particular case of a white noise input, various analytical expressions are derived for both the cross-power spectral density functions and cross-correlation functions of the filter's subsampled output. These results are compared and contrasted with similar formulas for a linear time-invariant system.

Notes: Abstract Aluminum is believed to modify and to some extent control the coating characteristics of commercially produced galvanneal sheet steel. These include mechanical, chemical, and aesthetic properties. Whereas the aluminum added to the molten zinc bath is known to form intermetallics before the steel is annealed, our research is primarily concerned with the effect aluminum has on suppression or enhancement of the particular iron--zinc alloy phases in the coating during galvannealing. The microstructure of four commercially important iron--zinc intermetallic phases containing varying aluminum content between 0--1.5 weight percent has been studied. It is also believed that an iron--aluminum alloy, known as the inhibition layer, forms on the steel surface following hot dipping and prior to annealing. Transmission and scattering Mössbauer spectroscopy as well as X-ray diffraction have been used to identify iron--zinc and iron--aluminum alloys present in the coatings. Discussion will be presented on the effect aluminum has on phase suppression for Fe--Zn alloys prepared in commercially produced galvanneal.

Notes: Abstract Identification of all the compounds present in various coatings on steels is particularly difficult. Non-destructive, in-situ analysis is necessary if the fraction of each compound as well as its probable layering within the coating, is to be determined. Mössbauer spectroscopy is one valuable probe capable of uniquely identifying all iron compounds which form as coatings on steel and other iron alloy surfaces. To investigate a complete coating several criteria need to be considered. Removing the coating inevitably leaves a small and perhaps important component intact on the substrate. Therefore investigating the coating as it remains intact on the steel is important if complete identification of the iron compounds is to be made. This also preserves crystalline texture or preferred growth orientation within the coating to which the Mössbauer effect is sensitive. Mössbauer spectroscopy is a non-destructive technique which allows the integrity of the coating to be maintained during analysis. The combined transmission and scattering Mössbauer geometries generally result in accurate analysis of the coating composition. For the scattering geometry added information on compound layering is obtained if separate Mössbauer spectra are recorded using the re-emitted gamma rays as well as the conversion electrons and subsequently emitted X-rays. In-situ scattering Mössbauer spectroscopy has been used to characterize the iron--zinc alloys which form in the coatings of commercially produced corrosion resistant galvannealed sheet steel, a product of great interest to automotive producers. The results show that different amounts of four iron--zinc phases are present depending on the production conditions of the coating. The different phases are also distinctly layered. Mössbauer analyses of corrosion coatings formed on the surface of steels which have been exposed to different environments has also been undertaken. Materials include structural steels exposed for up to 25 years in marine, rural and industrial environments, and the interior surfaces of boiler pipes subjected to adverse chemical and temperature environments.

Notes: Abstract The cytochrome c gene (cycA) of the filamentous fungus Aspergillus nidulans has been isolated and sequenced. The gene is present in a single copy per haploid genome and encodes a polypeptide of 112 amino acid residues. The nucleotide sequence of the A. nidulans cycA gene shows 87% identity to the DNA sequence of the Neurospora crassa cytochrome c gene, and approximately 72% identity to the sequence of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae iso-1-cytochrome c gene (CYC1). The S. cerevisiae CYC1 gene was used as a heterologous probe to isolate the homologous gene in A. nidulans. The A. nidulans cytochrome c sequence contains two small introns. One of these is highly conserved in terms of position, but the other has not been reported in any of the cytochrome c genes so far sequenced. Expression of the cycA gene is not affected by glucose repression, but has been shown to be induced approximatly tenfold in the presence of oxygen and three- to fourfold under heatshock conditions.

Description: Individuals benefit from occupying central roles in social networks, but little is known about the psychological traits that predict centrality. Across four college freshman dorms (n = 193), we characterized individuals with a battery of personality questionnaires and also asked them to nominate dorm members with whom they had different types of relationships. This revealed several social networks within dorm communities with differing characteristics. In particular, additional data showed that networks varied in the degree to which nominations depend on (i) trust and (ii) shared fun and excitement. Networks more dependent upon trust were further defined by fewer connections than those more dependent on fun. Crucially, network and personality features interacted to predict individuals’ centrality: people high in well-being (i.e., life satisfaction and positive emotion) were central to networks characterized by fun, whereas people high in empathy were central to networks characterized by trust. Together, these findings provide network-based corroboration of psychological evidence that well-being is socially attractive, whereas empathy supports close relationships. More broadly, these data highlight how an individual’s personality relates to the roles that they play in sustaining their community.
