Notes: Abstract A transient heat conduction problem within a thermal anisotropic multiphase solid body is formulated. An arbitrary thermal response functional defined over space and time domains is introduced and its first-order sensitivities with respect to variation of two kinds of interfaces are discussed. Both variations of shape and material properties of interface are considered. Sensitivity analysis is performed using the direct and adjoint approaches.

Notes: Abstract A transient hat conduction problem within a thermal anisotropic solid body is formulated. Considering an arbitrary thermal functional defined over space and time domains, its first-order sensitivities with respect to variation of structural material parameters as well as external boundary are derived using the direct and adjoint approaches.

Notes: Damage of a structure affects its stiffness properties and induces a shift in the free frequency spectrum. In the paper, an additional parameter is introduced, such as concentrated elastic or rigid support and mass. The evolution of natural frequencies is analyzed for varying parameter values with respect to damage location. This frequency variation is used in assessing the location and magnitude of damage by introducing the damage indices or by solving the identification problem requiring the minimization of the parameter dependent distance functional. The first part of the paper is concerned with the sensitivity analysis of damage indices with respect to support or mass location. The second part deals with the identification problem for which the specific examples are treated.

Notes: Abstract The paper presents an approach that allows us to consider in the shape optimization several static loading conditions together with constraints imposed on eigenfrequencies. The idea of the method is based upon simultaneous solutions of equations and inequalities arising from the Kuhn-Tucker necessary conditions for an optimum problem. The paper is illustrated with four examples in which stress and eigenfrequency are active constraints.

Notes: Abstract The semi-analytical, analytical and direct methods for numerical structural shape sensitivity analysis are discussed for a beam model and the general three-dimensional case. While the two first methods are applied directly to the finite element model of a structure, the direct approach follows from a continuous formulation and only the final results can be discretized.

Notes: Abstract Large structures are usually composed of elements by properly designed connections. The optimal design solution in such cases should provide optimal size and number of elements together with optimal connection stiffness. The problem is formulated by assuming the element cost to be a nonlinear function of its size and the cost of connection to depend on its stiffness or transmitted forces. The number of elements and the connection stiffness now constitute the design parameters to be determined. A two-level procedure is proposed for determination of the optimal segmentation for beam and plate structures. Several illustrative examples are presented.

Notes: Abstract The first- and second-order sensitivities with respect to varying structural shape are discussed for an arbitrary stress, strain and displacement functional. It is assumed that only the traction-free boundary of a structure can undergo the shape modification described by a set of shape design parameters. The first derivatives of a functional with respect to these parameters are derived using both the direct and adjoint approaches. Next the second derivatives are obtained using the mixed approach in which both the direct and adjoint first-order solutions are used. The general results are particularized for the case of complementary and potential energy of a structure. Some simple examples illustrate the theory presented.

Notes: Abstract For a linearly elastic fiber reinforced composite disk, the first variation of an arbitrary stress, strain and displacement functional corresponding to variation of material parameters is derived by using the direct and adjoint approaches to sensitivity analysis. The results are particularized to the case of total potential and complementary energies. The relevant optimality conditions for optimal design and identification problems are then derived.
