    Notes: Sedimentary features, mineralogy, bulk geochemical composition, stable isotope analyses and pollen data from sediment cores were used to reconstruct the Late Quaternary depositional evolution of the Salada Mediana playa lake (central Ebro Basin, northeastern Spain). The 150-cm-long sediment core sequence is composed of gypsum- and dolomite-rich muds (Lower and Middle sections) and black, laminated, calcite-bearing sediments (Upper section). The Salada Mediana formed as a karstic depression in the Miocene gypsum substratum during the Late Pleistocene. The Lower section was deposited in a sulphate–carbonate saline lake that ended with a period of desiccation and basin floor deflation. Subsequent deposition (Middle section) took place in a playa-lake system. Two cycles of lower water table and expanded saline mud flats occurred. The Holocene sequence is missing, probably as a result of aeolian erosion. Sedimentation resumed only a few centuries ago, and saline pan environments dominated until modern times. The Salada Mediana facies succession was mainly governed by fluctuations in the hydrological balance, brine composition, and salinity; however, aeolian processes (detrital input and deflation) and recycling of previously precipitated salts also played a significant role.

    Notes: Abstract The paleohydrological evolution of several high altitude, saline lakes located in the southernmost Altiplano (El Peinado and San Francisco basins, Catamarca province, NW Argentina) was reconstructed applying sedimentological, geochemical and isotopic techniques. Several playa lakes from the San Francisco basin (26° 56′ S; 68° 08′ W, 3800-3900 m a.s.l.) show evidence of a recent raise in the watertable that led to modern deposition of carbonate and diatomaceous muds. A 2 m - long core from El Peinado Lake (26° 29′ 59′′ S, 68°05′ 32′′ W, 3820 m a.s.l.) consists of calcitic crusts (unit 3), overlaid by an alternation of macrophyte-rich and travertine clast- rich, laminated muds (unit 2), and topped by travertine facies (unit 1). This sedimentary sequence illustrates a paleohydrological evolution from a subaerial exposure (unit 3) to a high lake stand (unit 2), and a subsequent smaller decrease in lake level (unit 1). The δ13Corganic matterrecord also reflects the lake transgression between units 3 and 2. Although there is a general positive correlation between δ 18Ocarbonate and salinity proxies (Na, Li and B content), the large data dispersion indicates that other factors besides evaporation effects control chemical and isotopic composition of lakewater. Consequently, the oxygen isotopic composition cannot be interpreted exclusively as an indicator of salinity or evaporation ratio. The degassing of CO2 during groundwater discharge can explain the enriched δ13C values for primary carbonates precipitated. The carbon budget in these high altitude, saline lakes seems to be controlled by physical rather than biological processes.The Altiplano saline lakes contain records of environmental and climatic change, although accurate 14C dating of these lacustrine sediments is hindered by the scarcity of terrestrial organic material, and the large reservoir effects. Sedimentologic evidence, a 210Pb-based chronology, and a preliminary U/Th chronology indicate a very large reservoir effect in El Peinado, likely as a result of old groundwaters and large contributions of volcanic and geothermal 14C-free CO2 to the lake system. Alternative chronologies are needed to place these paleorecords in a reliable chronological framework. A period of increased water balance in the San Francisco basin ended at about 1660 ± 82 yr B.P. (calendar yr U/Th age), and would correlates with the humid phase between 3000 and 1800 yr B.P detected in other sites of the southern Altiplano. Both, 210Pb and preliminary U/Th dating favor a younger age for the paleohydrological changes in El Peinado. The arid period reflected by subaerial exposure and low lake levels in unit 3 would have ended with a large increase in effective moisture during the late 17th century. The increased lake level during deposition of unit 2 would represent the period between AD1650 - 1900, synchronous to the Little Ice Age. This chronological framework is coherent with other regional records that show an abrupt transition from more arid to more humid conditions in the early 17th century, and a change to modern conditions in the late 19th century. Although there are local differences, the Little Ice Age stands as a significant climatic event in the Andean Altiplano.

    Description: The Iberian–Roman Humid Period (IRHP, 2600–1600 cal yr BP), is the most humid phase of the last 4000 yr in southern Spain as recorded in the sedimentary sequence of Zoñar Lake (37°29′00″N, 4°41′22″ W, 300 m a.s. l.). A varve chronology supported by several AMS 14C dates allows study of the lake evolution at annual scale in response to human impact and climate changes. There are four climate phases within this period: i) gradual transition (2600–2500 yr ago, 650–550 BC) from a previous arid period; ii) the most humid interval during the Iberian–Early Roman Epoch (2500–2140 yr ago, 550–190 BC); iii) an arid interval during the Roman Empire Epoch (2140–1800 yr ago, 190 BC AD 150); and iv) a humid period synchronous with the decline of the Roman Empire (1800–1600 yr ago, AD 150–350). Varve thickness and geochemical proxies show a multi-decadal cyclicity similar to modern North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) (60, 20 years) and solar variability cycles (11 yr). The timing and the structure of this humid period is similar to that described in Eastern Mediterranean and northern European sites and supports the same large-scale climate control for northern latitudes and the Mediterranean region.

    Description: This paper presents the results of an extensive chemical and isotopic investigation on natural thermal and cold fluids (spring waters and associated gases) discharging throughout the main geological domains of Morocco. The chemical features of the thermal springs are mainly dependent on rock dissolution involving Triassic evaporite formations, producing either Na-Cl or Ca-SO4 composition, although mixing with shallower connate high-saline waters in Neogene post-orogenic sedimentary layers cannot be ruled out. Only in the Moroccan Meseta and Anti-Atlas domains have spring discharges probably undergone equilibration as a result of water-rock interaction in granites. Of the chemical and isotopic features of the gas seeps, 3He/4He ratios and {delta}13C-CO2 values indicate the occurrence of a significant contribution of mantle-derived gas, especially at Oulmes (Moroccan Meseta) and Tinejdad-Erfoud (Anti-Atlas), where associated waters are found to equilibrate at relatively high temperatures (c. 130 {degrees}C). These areas are also characterized by the presence of Pliocene to Quaternary basaltic volcanic rocks. Thermal discharges located along the Rif front and related to the NE-SW-oriented main strike-slip faults are associated with a CH4- and/or N2-rich gas phase, derived respectively from a crustal or an atmospheric source. Some of them have significant contents of 3He that could indicate the rising of mantle fluids. Such a striking isotopic signature, which is not related to any recent volcanism visible at surface, is likely to be associated with cooling magma at depth related to transpressive fault systems. Similarly, in the northeastern area, the small, although significant, enrichment of 3He in the gas discharges seeping out along the Nekor seismic active fault and related to Pliocene-Quaternary basalts also suggests a deep-seated (magmatic) contribution. The distribution of thermal discharges is strongly related to the main active tectonic structures of Morocco. Moreover, this study indicates the presence of deep active tectonic structures in areas until now considered as stable. In particular, the NE-SW-trending Nekor fault may be part of a major system that extends to the Moroccan Meseta and into the Smaala-Oulmes fault system, thus emerging as a deep structure with crustal significance.

    Description: Late Quaternary volcanic basins are active landscapes from which detailed archives of past climate and seismic and volcanic activity can be obtained. A multidisciplinary study performed on a transect of sediment cores was used to reconstruct the depositional evolution of the high-elevation Laguna del Maule (LdM) (36∘ S, 2180 m a.s.l., Chilean Andes). The recovered 5 m composite sediment sequence includes two thick turbidite units (LT1 and LT2) and numerous tephra layers (23 ash and 6 lapilli). We produced an age model based on nine new 14C AMS dates, existing 210Pb and 137Cs data, and the Quizapú ash horizon (1932 CE). According to this age model, the relatively drier Early Holocene was followed by a phase of increased productivity during the mid-Holocene and higher lake levels after 4.0 ka cal BP. Major hydroclimate transitions occurred at ca. 11, 8.0, 4.0 and 0.5 ka cal BP. Decreased summer insolation and winter precipitation due to a southward shift in the southern westerly winds and a strengthened Pacific Subtropical High could explain Early Holocene lower lake levels. Increased biological productivity during the mid-Holocene (∼8.0 to 6.0 ka cal BP) is coeval with a warm–dry phase described for much of southern South America. Periods of higher lake productivity are synchronous to a higher frequency of volcanic events. During the Late Holocene, the tephra layers show compositional changes suggesting a transition from silica-rich to silica-poor magmas at around 4.0 ka cal BP. This transition was synchronous with increased variability of sedimentary facies and geochemical proxies, indicating higher lake levels and increased moisture at LdM after 4.0 ka cal BP, most likely caused by the inception of current El Niño–Southern Oscillation and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (ENSO–PDO) dynamics in central Chile.

    Description: 〈span〉〈div〉Abstract〈/div〉Tectonic fractures in Palaeozoic strata of the Kinshasa area, DR Congo, locally host palygorskite-bearing veins and associated calcite occurrences. The palygorskite deposits are typically massive, with a varying degree of alignment of clay particles, a higher quartz content than the arkose substrate, and a variable amount of smectite (montmorillonite). The associated calcite occurrences are macrocrystalline coatings and infillings, and more fine-grained calcite veins with cataclastic texture. The calcite coatings and infillings formed from solution in earth surface conditions, as recorded by their stable isotope signature. The palygorskite-dominated deposits in the fractures formed at a later stage, in a setting without indications of authigenic mineral formation related to hydrothermal activity or to low-temperature interaction of solutions with the local substrate. The veins most likely formed by vertical infiltration of suspended matter in fractures that extended to a post-Palaeozoic palaeosurface, during or after deposition of palygorskite-bearing Upper Jurassic to Early Cretaceous sediments. This represents an exceptional mode of palygorskite vein development, unrelated to any form of mineral authigenesis that is typically invoked to explain vein-type occurrences of palygorskite and related minerals.〈/span〉

    Description: Durante un año se han monitorizado las cuevas de La Paz y La Viña en el Sistema de Cuevas de Ortigosa de Cameros (NE de la Península Ibérica) para rastrear la señal isotópica del oxígeno desde la lluvia a la calcita espeleotémica, y así valorar la capacidad de esta señal para conservar información medioambiental. Se han comparado las señales isotópicas del oxígeno de los eventos de la lluvia, el agua de goteo (muestreada trimestralmente) y la calcita espeleotémica, precipitada también durante cada trimestre. El goteo en las cuevas responde a la precipitación en invierno, primavera y verano, más estrechamente en los puntos más próximos a la superficie que en los profundos. En otoño hay un retraso entre la lluvia y el goteo, lo que sugiere que el agua permanece por un tiempo en el epikarst, antes de que se reanude el goteo después del verano. Este retraso provoca que la señal isotópica del agua de goteo (media total de δ 18 O=−8.39‰ V-SMOW) se desvíe de la señal de la lluvia (media de δ 18 O=−7,41‰ V-SMOW). Por el contrario, en invierno la señal isotópica del agua de goteo es muy semejante a la de la lluvia. La composición isotópica de la calcita espeleotémica (media total de δ 18 O=−6,83‰ V-PDB) presenta un pequeño desfase (0,62–0,75%) respecto al valor que le correspondería por la composición isotópica del agua de goteo; esto indica que los efectos cinéticos durante la precipitación de la calcita son limitados, por lo que ésta conserva la señal de la lluvia, especialmente en invierno.

    Description: Abstract Cavity ring‐down spectroscopy (CRDS) is a highly sensitive laser technique that allows the analysis of isotopic signals and absolute concentration of individual molecular species in small‐volume samples. Here, we describe a protocol to quantify photosynthetic 13C‐uptake rates of marine phytoplankton by using the CRDS technique (13C‐CRDS‐PP). We validated our method by comparing the 13C‐PP rates measured between CRDS and isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) in samples with different carbon content (30–160 μgC). The comparison revealed that 13C‐CRDS‐PP rates were highly correlated with those obtained by IRMS (Spearman correlation coefficient, ρ = 0.95, p 〈 0.0001, n = 15), with a mean difference between the two estimates of ± 0.08 mgC m−3 h−1. Moreover, the slope of the relationship between CRDS and IRMS results was not significantly different from 1 (F = 0.03, p = 0.86), and the intercept did not differ from 0 (F = 1.4, p = 0.24), indicating that there was no bias in the CRDS relative to the IRMS‐based measurements. A separate analysis also showed that despite the difference in volume and carbon content between samples (40 ± 10 μgC and 160 ± 40 μgC, respectively), the 13C‐CRDS‐PP technique provides similar results (Mann–Whitney test, U = 30.5, p = 0.90, n = 8). In addition, 13C‐CRDS‐PP rates measured along the Red Sea (∼ 176 mgC m−2 d−1) agreed with 14C‐based PP rates previously reported for similar locations. Thus, this study evidenced that the 13C‐CRDS‐PP method is sensitive enough to quantify carbon fixation rates in oligotrophic regions.
