    Description / Table of Contents: In the wake of the disastrous tsunami which struck Papua New Guinea in 1998, this volume presents 20 state-of-the-art contributions on landslide tsunamis, including earthquake characteristics and ground motions, modeling of landslides in geotechnical engineering, field surveys on land and at sea, simulations of past, present, and potential future tsunamis, and theoretical studies of tsunami generation by landslides.

    Notes: Abstract Recombination inH-1, the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) of the rat, has defined two regions,H-1A andH-1B, which determine antigens apparently homologous to the KJD and Ia antigens of the mouse, respectively. Alloantisera directed at these antigens have been absorbed with kidney homogenates. The results showed that cells in the kidney express serologically detectable MHC antigens determined by both theH-1A andH-1B region. Control absorptions indicated that to account for these results in terms of recirculating lymphocytes, two perfused kidneys would need to contain more than 60 percent of the recirculating lymphocyte pool. It appears likely, therefore, that H-1B antigens are expressed by cells resident in the kidney.

    Notes: Abstract Geological samples from the southern Kerguelen Plateau include Lower Cretaceous basalt and lava breccia, probable Lower Cretaceous conglomerate and shelf limestone, Upper Cretaceous chert with dolomite, Upper Cretaceous-Eocene ooze, and Tertiary conglomerate. Neogene sediments are only a few hundred m thick, and include foraminiferal and diatomaceous ooze, and ice-rafted debris. In conjunction with seismic reflection profiles, the samples indicate Early Cretaceous near-shore volcanism, followed by erosion, sedimentation, and subsidence through Cretaceous; arching of the plateau at the end of Cretaceous; subsidence through Paleogene; widespread emergence in mid-Tertiary; and slow subsidence through Neogene.

    Notes: Abstract Eclogitic rocks of the D'Entrecasteaux Islands, Papua New Guinea, are of three types: true eclogites of omphacite-garnet-rutile; retrogressed or S-stage eclogites in which some omphacite has altered to symplectites of albite and less-jadeitic clinopyroxene (or amphibole); and rocks that are eclogites in all respects except that clinopyroxene is jadeitic diopside (Jd〈20) rather than omphacite. The rocks of the third group equilibrated in eclogite facies P-T conditions and, we conclude, are Na-poor eclogites, rather than granulites; i.e., low Na in the bulk rock is the reason for low jadeite content of clinopyroxene. Bulk rock chemical data confirm low Na and Si. Other prograde phases in the ecologitic rocks are kyanite, quartz, epidote group minerals and phengite and, in the low-Na group, orthopyroxene. Post-eclogite phases are amphibole, epidote group minerals, phengite and albite and, in the Na-poor eclogites, late phlogopite, calcic plagioclase, rare scapolite, and sulfides. The eclogitic rocks occur as lenticular boudins and small concordant tabular bodies within a 2–3 km thick sequence of migmatitic gneisses and, less commonly, in granodiorite. The gneiss sequence is bounded by detachment faults above and by younger granodiorite below, and is folded into broad antiforms. The three types of eclogite equilibrated at temperatures ranging from 530 to 840°C and pressures of 12 to 24 kbar. The metamorphic complex developed during Early Cenozoic subduction and arc-continent collison, and was elevated and exposed during Mid and Late Cenozoic crustal extension. The thermal gradient during subduction averaged 10°C/km and remained low during initial uplift, increasing to 18°C/km subsequently. Uplift averaged about 1 mMa-1 from 60 to 5 Ma, then about 4 mMa-1.

    Notes: Abstract Basalts from 5 Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) sites in the northwest Indian Ocean (Somali Basin and Arabian Sea) have general geochemical features consistent with a spreading origin at the ancient Carlsberg Ridge. However, compared to most MORBS from other oceans they have low normative olivine, TiO2, and Zr contents. There is no evidence that the mantle source of these northwest Indian Ocean basalts was enriched in incompatible elements relative to the Atlantic and Pacific ocean mantles. In detail, incompatible element abundances in these DSDP basalts establish that they evolved from several compositionally distinct parental magmas. In particular, basalts from site 236 in the Somali Basin have relatively high SiO2 and low Na, P, Ti, and Zr contents. These compositional features along with low normative olivine contents are similar to those proposed for melts derived by two-stage (or dynamic) melting. Published data also indicate there is no enrichment in incompatible elements at the southwest Indian Ocean triple junction, although southwest Indian Ocean basalts have slightly higher 87Sr/86Sr than “normal” Atlantic MORB. The data suggest that there are significant subtle geochemical variations in the Indian Ocean mantle sources, but are insufficient to show whether these variations have a systematic temporal or geographic distribution.

    Notes: The existence and distribution of vertical, interacting edges on cylindrical surfaces, which were derived from the basic structural features of the collagen molecule, have been examined as a function of the angle θ of the superhelix. Over the range θ = 26°-33° and near θ = 36°, the strongest intermolecular association was detected at 29.95°. This model exhibited three similar, self-interacting edges, separated by approximately 120°. The potential for three similar but nonidentical edges lies in the geometry of the collagen molecule, but the existence of such edges and their ability to self-associate is dependent upon the unique amino acid sequence. The relative strengths of association of each edge with itself and with the other edges are not identical, but the present analysis does not permit a judgment as to whether this variation could result in functional specificity in such interactions. All three chains participate in each edge though their contribution to the relative interaction strength is not identical.These edges showed distinct maxima when displaced past one another by integral intervals of D, where D = 233 residue positions (quarter-stagger). The strongest relative interaction occurs at a displacement of 1D.
