    Notes: The gonad development in the red-throat emperor Lethrinus miniatus is described and the first detailed evidence for protogyny in this species provided. The identification of transitional individuals, bimodal sex-specific size-frequency distributions and female biased sex ratios suggest that L. miniatus is most likely a protogynous hermaphrodite. Transitional L. miniatus gonads were characterized by the concurrent degeneration of all oocytes and the proliferation of spermatocysts near the edge of the lamellae, an increase in blood vessels along strands of stromal tissue within the lamellae and the formation of multiple sperm sinuses. The sites of oocyte degeneration and proliferation of spermatocysts were spatially segregated. An increase in blood vessels along strands of stromal tissue within the lamellae of transitional phase gonads is likely to assist in the breakdown of oocytes and the proliferation of spermatocysts. Most mature resting females containing spermatocysts occurred within the transitional size-frequency distribution, suggesting that the presence of spermatocysts in these females may be an early sign of sex change. Oocytes within female gonads were interrupted by filamentous strands of stromal tissue within the lamellae. The testis contained a remanent ovarian lumen but no residual oocytes. Three characteristics of transitional L. miniatus gonads were found to be unusual and described for few other species of coral reef fishes. These included the absence of oocytes within testes, increased numbers of blood vessels, and the presence of strands of stromal tissue within the lamellae.

    Notes: Summary Pieris rapae and P. brassicae feed on the same host plants and have synchronized seasons. P. brassicae, whose larvae are twice the size of P. rapae, lays eggs in clusters of 40–100 eggs whereas P. rapae lays single eggs. In this paper we examine how egg clustering may be advantageous for P. brassicae. The larval development of each species was studied, and found not to differ significantly. P. brassicae larvae were observed to migrate from their host plant after defoliating it. A comparison of the efficiency of host plant utilization by the two pierid species was undertaken by measuring the effect of larval feeding on the growth of their host plants (kale and brussel sprouts). The results show that egg clustering is advantageous for larval fitness in terms of host resource exploitation, and we suggest that P. brassicae is adapted for ovipositing on clumped vegetation, while P. rapae is selected for exploiting isolated plants.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Der Einfluß der Indolylessigsäure (IES) auf die Wanderung von radioaktivem Phosphor wurde an dekapitierten Sprossen von Populus robusta nach Entfernung ihrer Knospen und an dekapitierten Stengeln von Pisum sativum (var. Meteor) untersucht. Bereits nach wenigen Stunden war eine Anhäufung von 32P am Ort der Auxinzufuhr zu erkennen. Durch Dampf-Ringelungsversuche ließ sich bei Pisum zeigen, daß der Auxin-induzierte Transport über das Phloem erfolgt; weitere Beobachtungen lassen darauf schließen, daß dieser Effekt unabhängig vom Wachstum sein dürfte. Wenn man gleichzeitig mit IES Trijodbenzoesäure (TIBA) auf die apikale Schnittfläche aufbringt oder in einer Zone zwischen Auxinquelle und Injektionsstelle des 32P als Paste auf die Oberfläche des Sprosses aufträgt, so wird der Längstransport des markierten Phosphors erheblich gehemmt. Es wurden auch noch einige andere Verbindungen von Wuchsstoffcharakter geprüft. Von ihnen führte nur Naphthyloxyessigsäure zu einem ähnlichen Effekt wie IES; andere Wachstumsregulatoren wie Kinetin oder Gibberellinsäure förderten den 32P-Transport nicht. Untersuchungen an isolierten Pappelsprossen zeigten, daß der auxininduzierte Stofftransport nur in solchen Sprossen zu beobachten ist, deren Knospen vollständig entfernt worden waren. Auch hier scheint es sich um einen Transport im Phloem zu handeln. Die Wanderung von 32P ließ sich stets leichter in akropetaler Richtung induzieren. Die geschilderten Ergebnisse werden in Beziehung zu einigen neuerdings vorgeschlagenen Theorien des Transportmechanismus im Phloem diskutiert.
    Notes: Summary The role of indolylacetic acid (IAA) in influencing the movement of radiophosphorus from a remote locus has been investigated in the decapitated stems of Pisum sativum (var. Meteor) and disbudded shoots of Populus robusta. It has been shown after only a few hours that the radioisotope accumulates at the region where the auxin was applied. By steam-girdling experiments with pea, it was established that auxin-induced transport occurs via the phloem and other obserbations suggest that this effect may be independent of growth. When tri-iodobenzoic acid was applied together with IAA at the stump or to the surface of the stem between the IAA source and the injection point of the tracer, the transport of 32P along the stem was greatly reduced. Of a number of auxin-type substances tested, only naphthoxyacetic acid gave a comparable response to that obtained with IAA, whilst other growth regulators such as kinetin or gibberellic acid did not stimulate 32P transport. Studies with isolated poplar cuttings showed that auxin-induced transport could only be demonstrated by completely disbudded shoots. Again, phloem transport seemed to be involved and the movement of 32P could be more readily induced in an acropetal direction. The results are discussed in relation to some recently proposed theories concerning the mechanism of translocation in the phloem.

    Description: Numerical simulations of thermal convection in the Earth's mantle often employ a pseudo-plastic rheology in order to mimic the plate-like behavior of the lithosphere. Yet the benchmark tests available in the literature are largely based on simple linear rheologies in which the viscosity is either assumed to be constant or weakly dependent on temperature. Here we present a suite of simple tests based on non-linear rheologies featuring temperature-, pressure-, and strain rate dependent viscosity. Eleven different codes based on the finite volume, finite element, or spectral methods have been used to run five benchmark cases leading to stagnant lid, mobile lid, and periodic convection in a 2-D square box. For two of these cases, we also show resolution tests from all contributing codes. In addition, we present a bifurcation analysis, describing the transition from a mobile lid regime to a periodic regime, and from a periodic regime to a stagnant lid regime, as a function of the yield stress. At a resolution of around 100 cells or elements in both vertical and horizontal directions, all codes reproduce the required diagnostic quantities with a discrepancy of at most ∼ 3% in the presence of both linear and non-linear rheologies. Furthermore they consistently predict the critical value of the yield stress at which the transition between different regimes occurs. As the most recent mantle convection codes can handle a number of different geometries within a single solution framework, this benchmark will also prove useful when validating viscoplastic thermal convection simulations in such geometries.     Description: Using a management strategy evaluation approach, we compare a range of new and established management procedures (MPs) for setting catch-limits in fisheries. Performance is evaluated with respect to fish life history type, level of stock depletion, data quality, and autocorrelation in recruitment strength. We quantify the robustness of each MP with respect to the various observation processes. Methods using observations of absolute biomass or stock depletion offer the best overall performance and this is consistent across life history types, data qualities, and stock depletion levels. Simple MPs can outperform conventional data-limited methods and data-rich assessments that use time-series of catch and effort data. MP performance is most sensitive to biases in catch data. Our results indicate that often tuning MPs for specific stocks is important, though this may not be viable in data-poor assessment scenarios because of insufficient data and analysis resources.

Information on the age of individuals is often required for models assessing the status of stocks. Techniques used to estimate age of tuna have varied across species and agencies, precluding meta-analyses of age and growth. We compared age estimates obtained from commonly used ageing techniques for four important tuna species: bigeye tuna, yellowfin tuna, southern bluefin tuna, and albacore tuna. Estimates of age from counts of annual increments in transverse-sectioned otoliths were generally higher than those from counts of daily increments in transverse and longitudinal sections for all species, particularly for fish older than two years. However, annual counts produced younger estimates, on average, relative to daily counts for bigeye and yellowfin tuna younger than one year. Estimates derived from daily increments in longitudinal and transverse sections were generally similar, although longitudinal sections produced relatively older age estimates for individuals older than two years. A linear or non-linear increase in the magnitude of differences between ageing methods was the best-approximating model in all cases except when comparing daily-increment counts between transverse and longitudinal otolith sections for southern bluefin tuna. These observations are consistent with a narrowing of daily increments with increasing age, resulting in underestimates of age relative to those derived from annual increments. We conclude that (i) daily increments are unsuitable for ageing individuals over two years, especially for southern bluefin and albacore, (ii) longitudinal sections are more precise and produce older age estimates than transverse sections for daily-age estimates, (iii) there are considerable differences in these trends between species, likely dependent on longevity, and (iv) parameter estimates and/or conclusions based on meta-analyses using age data derived from different ageing methods are likely confounded with methodological biases. This result demonstrates that greater effort is required to provide consistent, validated methods for routine age determination to support the assessment and management of these valuable populations.
