Notes: Abstract. PbTe thin films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition from a Nd:YAG laser (532 nm). The films were deposited on glass substrates. The influence of deposition temperature (80–160 °C), fluence (5–13 J/cm2) and nominal composition of the target on the chemical composition of the films was studied. It was found that the tellurium content of the film is strongly dependent on both the laser fluence and the deposition temperature. Highly textured stoichiometric films can be obtained with suitable conditions.

Notes: Nanopowders of n-type (Bi0.95Sb0.05)2(Te0.95Se0.05)3 and p-type (Bi0.2Sb0.8)2Te3 have been synthesized by laser fracture of micron-sized powders in water. These alloys are the best conventional thermoelectric materials for use in room temperature applications. The nanopowders have been characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The nanopowders have been mechanically mixed in different ratios with the micron sized powders. These mixtures have then been cold pressed in order to perform thermoelectric characterization and to see the influence of nano-particle inclusions on the transport properties

Notes: A four-pad 3ω method was developed for determining the thermal conductivity of bulk and thin film materials. The heat conduction in the sample geometry was investigated by numerical simulation employing the finite volume technique. As a result, the conditions (i.e., sample geometry, frequency range) can be predicted when conventional analytical formulas are suited to determine the thermal conductivity of bulk and thin film material from the data measured. Experiments were performed that confirm the validity and accuracy of the numerical calculations. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Bi2Te3, Sb2Te3 and Bi8Sb32Te60 thermoelectric materials have been prepared by mechanical alloying using a high energy planetary ball mill. The alloy formation was followed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), the morphology by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the composition by electron microprobe. The samples of Bi8Sb32Te60 were prepared in a reasonable milling time (less than 8 h) by mechanical alloying of binary alloys (Bi2Te3 and Sb2Te3). The single phase Bi8Sb32Te60 solid solution obtained presents convenient stoichiometry and good homogeneity in composition.

Notes: Summary The temperature influence on the heartbeats of unrestrained Astacus fluviatilis, Astacus leptodactylus, and Cambarus affinis has been studied by means of aspiration electrodes. This method allows a complete and long termed registration of the heartbeats. The rule of van t'Hoff has been proved for the heartbeat frequencies of Astacus fluviatilis between 0 and 26° C, of Astacus leptodactylus between 0 and 28° C, and of Cambarus affinis from 0–30° C. Lethal temperatures have been found at about 28° C, 34° C, and 37° C respectively, the Q 10 was measured as 1.7, 1.9, and 1.8 respectively. Warm adapted specimen show a significant higher frequency at higher temperatures than cold adapted ones. Young individuals of little weight (2.5 g) have been found to posses a marked higher frequency than the heavier adult animals (90 g).

Notes: Abstract. The influence of target morphology on the density of droplets and on thickness profiles was studied on thin bismuth films prepared by pulsed laser deposition. Films were deposited at room temperature on glass substrates from a Nd:YAG laser working at a wavelength of 532 nm. Two parameters were taken into account: the target diameter and the method of scanning the laser beam on the target. Three different laser beam scans have been simulated and tested afterwards. The quality of the films, as determined by scanning electron microscopy, can be improved by working with large targets and with appropriate scanning of the laser beam.

Notes: Abstract. Homogeneous polycrystalline Bi100-xSbx (x=12, 15, 22) alloys were synthesized by mechanical alloying. The transport coefficients (electrical resistivity, thermal conductivity, and thermopower) were measured, in the 77–300 K temperature range, on samples consolidated either by sintering or extrusion. The thermoelectric figure of merit was deduced from the three coefficients. The temperature dependences are discussed as a function of the alloys’ microstructures taking into account the qualitative effect of potential barriers. Extrusion leads to better performing thermoelectric materials than does sintering. The highest figure of merit is reached for temperatures around 150 K, a temperature at which no reliable thermoelectric material of long service life is available until now.

Notes: Abstract Skeletal isomerization reactions, of hexanes (2-methylpentane and methylcyclopentane) have been carried out in a flow reactor on a polycrystalline intermetallic Pt3Ti compound which has been powdered and treated under several oxidative and reductive conditions. The results are compared to those obtained with (i) TiO2 supported Pt catalysts in or not in the Strong Metal-Support Interaction (SMSI) state, (ii) a bulk Pt3Ti sample studied under static catalytic conditions in an U.H.V. apparatus, and (iii) bulk Pt surfaces. The powdered Pt3Ti compound shows a very unstable behaviour under hydrogen. Differences in behaviour between the bulk and the decomposed powdered Pt3Ti samples are observed, showing the important part played by Pt3Ti in SMSI phenomena. A model is then proposed.
