    Notes: Abstract Six Mongoloid and four Caucasoid populations of Assam, India, were examined for A1A2BO, Rhesus, Duffy and Diego blood groups. The distribution of their phenotypes and allele frequencies are presented. In the perspective of the ethnographic background, the results have been discussed in terms of genetic variability among these populations and probable reasons for its existence. The major groups, namely Caucasoids and Mongoloids, appear to form two separate groups in terms of these blood groups, though evidence is there to suggest intermixture.

    Notes: Summary The distribution of the hemoglobin Constant Spring (Hb CS) gene in eight populations in Southeast Asia (including Assam) was determined using oligonucleotide hybridization. Hb CS was absent in two Assamese populations with a high prevalence of Hb E. The Hb CS gene frequency was 0.033 in northern Thailand and near 0.01 in central Thailand and Cambodia. High frequencies, between 0.05 and 0.06, were observed in northeastern Thailand. The present data and a similar study in Laotians suggest that the Lao-speaking populations of the Mekong River basin in northeastern Thailand and Laos have the highest frequencies of the Hb CS gene in Southeast Asia.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Zwei Bevölkerungsgruppen in Assam (Indien) wurden untersucht. Bei 80 Khasi (Bhoi-Untergruppe), einem austroasiatischen Stamm, fanden sich 41% HbE-Träger, bei 82 Ahom, Abkömmlingen von Thai-Einwanderern, 58% HbE-Träger. Die große Häufigkeit des HbE in Gruppen mit ethnischen Beziehungen zu Südostasien unterstützen die Ansicht, daß das HbE-Gen von dort nach Indien eingeführt wurde.
    Notes: Summary Two groups in Assam (India) were examined. Among 80 Khasi (Bhoi subgroup), an austroasiatic tribal group, there were 41% HbE carriers; and in 82 Ahom, a group related to the Thai population, 58% of HbE carriers were found. This high prevalence of HbE in groups with ethnic relations to Southeast Asia supports the contention that the HbE gene was introduced to India from that area.

    Notes: Summary Laboratory model test results for the ultimate bearing capacity of a strip foundation supported by geogrid-reinforced sand and saturated clay are presented. One type of geogrid only was used for all the tests. On the basis of the model test results, the optimum depth and width of reinforcing layers and the optimum depth of the location of the first layer of the geogrid in sand and saturated clay were determined and compared.

    Notes: Summary Laboratory model test results for the ultimate bearing capacity of surface strip foundations on geogrid-reinforced sand and unreinforced sand are presented. A fine uniform sand and one type of geogrid (Tensar BX1000(SSO)) were used for the tests. The width of the foundation and the relative density of sand were varied to determine their effects on the bearing capacity ratio. It was found that the bearing capacity ratio of the sand-geogrid system decreased with an increase in foundation width. However, above a certain foundation width (130–140 mm) a practically constant value of bearing capacity ratio was observed.

    Notes: Abstract Laboratory model test results are presented for the cyclic load-induced settlement of a strip foundation supported by a saturated clayey soil. In performing the tests, the foundation was initially subjected to an allowable static load, after which a cyclic load with a frequency of one cycle per second was superimposed on it. The magnitudes of the static load and the amplitude of the cyclic load were varied. Based on the model test results, relationships for the foundation settlement and intensities of the static and cyclic loads are presented.

    Notes: Summary Laboratory model test results for estimation of the ultimate uplift capacity of rigid metal piles embedded in a compacted near-saturated clayey soil are presented. The length-diameter ratio of the piles was varied from 10 to 15. The direction of the uplift load on the pile was varied from 0 to 50°. Based on the present test results and the results of existing model studies, an empirical relationship for estimating the pile uplift capacity has been presented.

    Notes: Summary The dynamic active earth pressure on retaining structures due to seismic loading is commonly obtained by using the modified Coulomb's approach which is known as the Mononobe-Okabe method. This method has generally been used for cohesionless soils only. A general solution for the determination of total (i.e. static and dynamic) active earth force for a c-ϕ soil as backfill was developed by Prakash and Saran in 1966 based on the simplifying assumption that adhesion between the wall-soil interface is equal to the cohesion of the soil, that the surface of the backfill is horizontal, and that the effect of the vertical acceleration can be neglected. This note presents an improved method for calculating the static and dynamic active force behind a rigid retaining wall based on its geometry, inclination of the backfill, surcharge, strength parameters of the backfill, and the adhesion between the wall face and the soil. The effects of adhesion, inclination of backfill, and vertical components of seismic loading for a typical retaining wall are discussed.

    Notes: Summary Laboratory model test results are presented that determine the effectiveness of using layers of geogrids as reinforcement in sand to reduce the settlement of square surface foundations subjected to transient loading. The model tests were conducted with only one type of geogrid at one relative density of compaction of sand. The maximum intensity of the transient load applied always exceeded the static ultimate bearing capacity of the foundation when supported by unreinforced sand. The settlement reduction factors for various depths of reinforcement have been determined.
