Notes: A template-synthesis technique based on self-ordered hexagonal nanopore alumina templates was applied to synthesize highly ordered carbon nanotube arrays via thermal decomposition of ethylene with iron as the catalyst electrodeposited into the bottom of the pores. The resultant carbon nanotubes are monodispersed and have open ends with uniform sizes. It was found that the insulating oxide layer lying between the carbon nanotubes and the underlying aluminum greatly obstructs the electron emission from the carbon nanotube arrays. After the oxide layer was removed, the arrays exhibited excellent field emission properties with a threshold electric field of ∼2.8 V/μm and emission current density of 0.08 mA/cm2 at 3.6 V/μm. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A simple and high-yield method involving vapor-liquid-solid wire-like growth mechanism was developed for the synthesis of GaN nanowires. In this process, the mixture of Ga and SiO2 reacted with ammonia in the presence of the Fe2O3 catalyst supported by Al2O3. The x-ray powder diffraction measurement and transmission electron microscopy observations confirmed that the synthesized GaN nanowires are single-crystal hexagonal wurtzite structure with diameters ranged from 10 to 50 nm and lengths up to several micrometers. Based on the fact that a small Fe dominant particle attached to one end of some nanowires, a growth model of the GaN nanowires was proposed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Limit analysis of cracked structures using mathematical programming and finite element method is presented. This direct algorithm is based on a proposition of the modified Markov variational principle. The obtained upper bound formula is applicable with any kinematic admissible finite elements. The regularization of plastic dissipation function is performed to overcome the indetermination of the objective gradient in the rigid region and to realize a smooth transition of the objective function between the plastified and non-plastified regions. In order to simulate the singularity of crack-tip strain field for an ideal plastic model, the separate-point degenerated finite elements are used around the crack tips. This improves the precision of limit solutions. Numerical results of plane and axisymmetric cracked structures are extensively compared with analytic ones. The application of limit analysis in fracture mechanics is illustrated by an example.

Notes: Abstract The intake and tissue distribution of thorium (2 3 2Th) was studied in an urban (Bombay) population in India. From the analysis of 16 whole diet samples, the average daily intake through food was found to be 2 μg (range 0.8–4.3 μg·d−1). The estimated intake through drinking water and inhalation comes out to be 0.03 and 0.02 μg per day. From the analysis of human autopsy tissue samples it is observed that the concentration ranges in lungs and bone are 1.5–16 μg/kg and 0.2–9.0 μg/kg fresh weight respectively. The average urinary concentration is 12 ng/1 (range 7–22 ng/l for 10 samples). Among the different body tissues, pulmonary lymph nodes were found to contain the highest concentration (geometric mean 53.4 μg/kg, range 31.4–85.5 μg/kg for 6 samples). Analysis of the samples was done by the neutron activation technique. 311.8 keV gamma photons of2 3 3Pa which is the activation product of2 3 2Th, were counted after chemical separation. A 54 cm3 intrinsic Ge detector coupled to 1024-channel analyser was used. Using the average lung content and the daily average intake values of thorium through inhalation, the clearance half-time from lung was estimated.

Notes: Abstract The daily intake of uranium (238U) by an urban Indian adult population was estimated by the analysis of a duplicate diet, drinking water, and air samples using neutron activation and radio-chemical separation. The uranium intake through food is 0.55 μg which is much larger than that from drinking water and air, at 0.09 and 0.01 μg, respectively. The total daily dietary intake of uranium, calculated from the concentrations measured in the individual food ingredients and their daily consumption (based on the national survey), is found to be 2.2 μg which is a factor of 3.5 higher than that based on a duplicate urban diet. The maximum contribution to the daily intake is found to be from cereals. The lower intake by the urban population is most likely due to their lower food consumption.

Notes: Abstract Neutron activation followed by a simple radio-chemical separation procedure was employed to determine the concentrations of thorium (232Th) in human blood serum, clot, and urine of normal subjects and three groups of occupationally exposed persons. The thorium concentrations in the blood serum, clot, and urine samples of the exposed groups were distinctly higher than those of the other study groups and were found to increase with increasing occupational length of the persons. Daily urinary excretion is correlated with serum thorium burden and it is estimated that the daily excreted thorium is about 15% of the thorium in the serum pool.

Notes: Abstract  The dual boundary element method is applied for the two-dimensional linear elastic analysis of fatigue problem of multiple-cracked body. The traction integral equation is applied on ones of surfaces of cracks while the usual displacement integral equation simultaneously on the others. General multiple crack growth problem is solved in a single-region formulation. All crack surfaces are discretized with discontinuous quadratic boundary elements. J-integral technique is used to evaluate stress intensity factors. The real extension path of cracks is simulated by a linear incremental crack extension, based on the maximum principal stress criterion. For each increment analysis of the cracks, crack extension is conveniently modelled with new boundary elements. Remeshing is no longer necessary. Fatigue life analysis is carried out with Paris’ formulae. Several numerical examples show high efficiency of present method.
