Notes: Abstract Matrix methods for computing perturbations of non-linear perturbed systems, as formulated by Alexeev, involve an expression for the full solution of the first variational equations of the system evaluated about a reference orbit. These cannot be immediately applied to a regularized system of equations where perturbations about Keplerian motion are considered since the solution of the variational equations of regularized Keplerian motion does not in general correspond to the solution of the variational equations of the unregularized equations. But, as Kustaanheimo and Stiefel have pointed out, the regularized equations of Keplerian motion should be excellent for the initiation of a perturbation theory since they are linear in form. This paper describes a method for applying Alexeev's theorem to a regularized system where full advantage is taken of the basic linear form of the unperturbed equations.

Notes: Abstract Several families of periodic orbits close to heteroclinic points were computed, and their evolution, as a function of the energy, was followed. All appeared spontaneously at the occasion of the formation of the heteroclinic points, and had no genealogical links with other families. This behavior, which confirms a prediction by Dr. Contopoulos, is in contrast to the behavior of periodic orbits close to homoclinic points, some of which have genealogical links with periodic orbits existing in the ‘quasi-integrable’ phase of the system. The orbits found here appeared in regions where stochasticity was well established; so their appearance does not seem to be connected with the onset of stochasticity.

Notes: Abstract Let the solution of a differential equation, expanded in powers of the independent variablet, have radius of convergenceT. let τ, wheret=t(τ), be a new independent variable, and let the corresponding power series in τ have radius of convergenceS. Thent(S) will not in general be equal toT. Ift(S)〉T, then the series in powers of τ may have advantages over those in powers oft. Mathematical consequences of this distinction have been appreciated since the time of Poincaré. In this note the practical applications of some transformations are investigated.

Notes: Abstract Recently proposed methods of iteration and initial guesses are discussed, including the method of Laguerre-Conway. Tactics for a more refined initial guess for use with universal variables over a small time interval are described.

Notes: Abstract For conservative dynamical systems having two degrees of freedom Birkhoff has established the existence of two classes of periodic orbits. The first consists of stable-unstable pairs close to periodic orbits of the stable type, and the second of orbits having fixed points (in a suitable surface of section) close to homoclinic points. In this paper orbits of the latter type are listed, and their evolution followed as a function of the energy. For the energy at which they were first computed, all were unstable; but they evolved, with diminishing energy, into one orbit of the stable type which appears to be a member of the first class of orbits mentioned above.

Notes: Abstract The present condition of planetary theory, i.e., the computation and comprehension of the motion of the planets, is reviewed. Account is taken of the new and anticipated demands of observational accuracy, new mathematical methods in perturbation theory, and the use of the high-speed computer to perform algebraic as well as numerical work.

Notes: Abstract Poincaré's method of consequents is applied to the computation of asymptotic branches from the unstable equilibrium L4 in the restricted problem of three bodies with equal masses, known as the ‘Copenhagen Problem’. Because of looping in the orbits, the ‘Poincaré mapping’ in this problem is not continuous, and the structure of the branches is more complicated than that for simpler dynamical systems for which computations have appeared.
