Notes: The construction and performance of an electron bombardment ion source designed to produce a beam of low-energy (100–400 eV) singly ionized helium (He+) with a significant fraction of ions in the metastable 2S1/2 state is described. The source operates in the fringe field of a magnet and injects ions along the field lines into the center of the magnet. He+ currents of up to 70 μA with small beam energy spread (3 eV) are obtained. A typical metastable fraction is 0.08% for small He+ currents (2–5 μA).

Notes: We have assembled a water-cooled iron-free copper solenoid whose central magnetic field is constant to within one part in 105 over a region 1 cm in diameter extending 12 cm along the axis of the magnet. The solenoid operates without the use of shim coils or current shunts. It achieves a central field of 15.7 kG for a current of 1150 A. In this article, we report on features incorporated in the design of the solenoid and the methods of field shaping used to obtain a very uniform central field region. The use in our design of multiple current elements has the advantage that it allows for great flexibility in obtaining a desired field shape. We describe in detail the method used to arrive at an initial guess for the optimal positioning of the coils as well as an iterative corrective procedure involving sequences of measurement, calculation, and adjustment that can be used subsequently to zero errors in the field shape. These general methods are easy to implement on a computer, yet they are powerful and appear to converge rapidly.

Notes: Abstract— We experimentally tested the hypotheses that bluegills in vegetated habitats grow more rapidly than in nonvegetated habitats because (1) vegetated habitats contain a greater caloric density and (2) are less susceptible to energetic depletion. The 10-week experiment was conducted in enclosures containing factorial combinations of the presence or absence of Vallisneria americana and juvenile bluegills Lepomis macrochirus. After 6 weeks, Vallisneria-only treatments contained a mean of 1048 cal/m2 in the benthos, whereas treatments with both Vallisneria and bluegills contained 610 cal/m2. Hyalella azteca, a preferred prey of bluegill, were nearly depleted in nonvegetated enclosures, whereas Hyalella densities in enclosures with Vallisneria were much less effected by fish. Bluegill growth was significantly greater with Vallisneria than without but declining water temperatures after week 6 resulted in slower growth despite abundant prey. Ultimately, growth of bluegill resulted from an interaction between availability and ingestion of prey, and water temperature.

Notes: Abstract— We studied the trophic interactions and spatial distributions of bluegills Lepomis macrochirus and largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides in a macrophyte bed in Lake Onalaska, a backwater lake in the upper Mississippi River. The diets of adult and age-0 bluegills were similar and changed seasonally probably in response to changes in life stages of macroinvertebrates (i. e. emergence of winged adults). Diets and diel patterns of abundance of bluegill suggest that age-O and adults were feeding in the vegetated, littoral zone. Predation by age-O largemouth bass appears to influence use of vegetated habitat by age-0 bluegills. In summer, when most age-O bluegills were vulnerable to predation by age-O largemouth bass, bluegill abundance was strongly correlated with vegetation biomass. In October and November, piscivory by age-O largemouth bass was limited by gape. Consequently, the relationship between the abundance of age-O bluegills and vegetation biomass was weakened because predation risk by age-O largemouth bass was reduced.

Notes: [Auszug] THE statements of Smit and Hertogen1 that the terminal Cretaceous extinctions were "extremely abrupt" (200yr), lacked "warning signal," and that "gradual extinction lose their credibility on more detailed inspection," require substantiation. Simultaneous geological-range terminations of numerous ...

Notes: [Auszug] Isolated thick filaments were prepared from the medial telson levator muscle, stretched to its in vivo rest length. The muscle was soaked in 50% glycerol-50% relaxing solution at 4C overnight (5 mM Tris buffer, 100 mM KC1,1 mM dithiothreitol, 5 mM MgCl2, 8 mM EGTA, 5 mM ATP, pH 7.0). In this and ...

Notes: [Auszug] Using the electron microscope the resolution is improved to about 0-3 micron and the technique is more sensitive because the tracks can be identified more readily. The same CAB film that records the tracks is also used to extract precipitates from the specimen, giving a combined extraction replica ...

Notes: Summary One difficulty in the production of allophenic mice by aggregation of preimplantation embryos is that they frequently roll apart before the bonds between the blastomeres have had time to form. One solution to the problem, described here, is to pretreat one of the embryos with rabbit anti-mouse serum just prior to pushing them together. Blastocyst formation is unhampered by antibody treatment, and numerous allophenic mice have already been produced with this new procedure.
