Description: In this paper we analyze the effect of grating spacing on relative oscillation intensity and two-beam coupling gain of a ring resonator in presence of an applied electric field. The photorefractive crystal used in the ring resonator is KNSBN. It is found that the relative oscillation intensity increases exponentially with grating spacing in presence as well as in absence of the applied electric field, and approaches to a saturation state after some grating spacing. The increase is however slower under applied field condition, hence, the saturation state is reached at higher value of the grating spacing. The two-beam coupling gain decreases with grating spacing for both conditions on electric field. The decrease is however less abrupt in presence of applied electric field. It is found that the saturation state occurs for the grating spacing over 2 to 4 μm.

Description: Phase transitional, dielectric, electro-optical, polarizing optical microscopic, photoluminescence (PL), and Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic measurements have been carried out on ZnS:Mn quantum dots (QDs) dispersed ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC). A new dielectric relaxation mode has been envisaged in FLC material due to the presence of 0.25 wt. % ZnS:Mn (40 mol. %) QDs. The characteristics of the new mode have been compared with those of the soft mode. A significant fastening of the electro-optical response (∼75%) has been observed in the case of 0.25 wt. % ZnS:Mn (20 mol. %) QDs doped FLC material. The induction of the new relaxation mode is attributed to the flexoelectric tilt fluctuations. The induced flexoelectric polarization in the FLC medium at the vicinity of QDs might be responsible for the enhanced spontaneous polarization in the FLC/QDs mixtures. Quenching in PL for the FLC/QDs mixtures has been observed, which strongly depends on Mn content in QDs. The change in FTIR spectra for the FLC/QDs composite clearly indicates the change in molecular dynamics of the pure FLC after the dispersion of QDs. The presented results will certainly pave a way to utilize QDs for obtaining faster response of the FLC material and potential material to tune the relaxation processes.

Description: In the ciliate Paramecium, transposable elements and their single-copy remnants are deleted during the development of somatic macronuclei from germline micronuclei, at each sexual generation. Deletions are targeted by scnRNAs, small RNAs produced from the germ line during meiosis that first scan the maternal macronuclear genome to identify missing sequences, and then allow the zygotic macronucleus to reproduce the same deletions. Here we show that this process accounts for the maternal inheritance of mating types in Paramecium tetraurelia, a long-standing problem in epigenetics. Mating type E depends on expression of the transmembrane protein mtA, and the default type O is determined during development by scnRNA-dependent excision of the mtA promoter. In the sibling species Paramecium septaurelia, mating type O is determined by coding-sequence deletions in a different gene, mtB, which is specifically required for mtA expression. These independently evolved mechanisms suggest frequent exaptation of the scnRNA pathway to regulate cellular genes and mediate transgenerational epigenetic inheritance of essential phenotypic polymorphisms.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Singh, Deepankar Pratap -- Saudemont, Baptiste -- Guglielmi, Gerard -- Arnaiz, Olivier -- Gout, Jean-Francois -- Prajer, Malgorzata -- Potekhin, Alexey -- Przybos, Ewa -- Aubusson-Fleury, Anne -- Bhullar, Simran -- Bouhouche, Khaled -- Lhuillier-Akakpo, Maoussi -- Tanty, Veronique -- Blugeon, Corinne -- Alberti, Adriana -- Labadie, Karine -- Aury, Jean-Marc -- Sperling, Linda -- Duharcourt, Sandra -- Meyer, Eric -- England -- Nature. 2014 May 22;509(7501):447-52. doi: 10.1038/nature13318.
