    Description: Central Asian caves with Palaeolithic deposits are few, but they provide a rich record of human fossils and cultural assemblages that has been used to model Late Pleistocene hominin dispersals. However, previous research has not yet systematically evaluated the formation processes that influence the frequency of Palaeolithic cave sites in the region. To address this deficiency, we combined field survey and micromorphological analyses in the piedmont zone of south Kazakhstan. Here, we present our preliminary results focusing on selected sites of the Qaratau mountains. Sediment cover varies among the surveyed caves, and loess‐like sediments dominate the cave sequences. The preservation of cave deposits is influenced by reworking of cave sediments within the caves but also by the broader erosional processes that shape semiarid landscapes. Ultimately, deposits of potentially Pleistocene age are scarce. Our study provides new data in the geoarchaeologically neglected region of Central Asia and demonstrates that micromorphology has great analytical potential even within the limitations of rigorous survey projects. We outline some of the processes that influence the formation and preservation of cave deposits in Kazakhstan, as well as broader implications for the distribution of Palaeolithic cave sites in Central Asia and other semiarid environments.

    Description: The late Quaternary sequence off eastern South Island, New Zealand, consists of ~100 m of alternating bluish gray pelagic oozes and greenish gray hemipelagic oozes that extend uninterruptedly back to the Brunhes/Matuyama boundary (0.73 m.y.). A very high resolution (~2400 yr.) record of sediment texture, calcium carbonate content, and planktonic and benthic foraminiferal oxygen and carbon isotope composition demonstrates an in-phase cyclical fluctuation between the sedimentary parameters that closely correspond to the pelagic-hemipelagic sedimentation cycles and the isotope composition. Pelagic oozes, formed during interglacial periods of high eustatic sea level, are characterized by calcareous microfossils, relative enrichment in sand and clay sizes, high carbonate contents, reduced delta18O values, and increased delta13C values. Hemipelagic oozes, associated with glacial episodes and lowered eustatic sea level, include common terrigenous material and siliceous microfossils, are enriched in silt sizes, have low carbonate contents, high delta18O values, and low delta13C values. The history of alpine glaciations and associated erosion of the South Island of New Zealand, as expressed by the appearance of hemipelagic oozes, can be correlated directly with the major fluctuations of Northern Hemisphere ice sheets as expressed by the influence of eustatic sea-level changes on the oxygen isotope composition of both planktonic and benthic foraminifers. This high-accumulation-rate record contains conspicuous intervals of highfrequency, high-amplitude isotope variability including the presence of multiple glacial/interglacial intervals within single isotope stages, and offers one of the best sections cored to date for detailed study of the evolution and history of climate change over the last 0.75 m.y.

    Description: High-resolution textural, carbonate, microfossil, and oxygen (delta18O) and carbon (delta13C) stable isotopic analyses are presented for the late Quaternary (isotopic stages 1 to 6) interval of a core at Deep Sea Drilling Project site 594, situated just south of the present Subtropical Convergence in northernmost Subantarctic surface waters on the southern flank of Chatham Rise in the southwest Pacific. Downcore alternations of pelagic and hemipelagic oozes correspond to interglacial and glacial episodes, respectively. Interglacial oozes contain a northern Subantarctic assemblage of planktonic foraminifera, with rare cool subtropical species, while glacial oozes are characterized by species typical of southern(most) Subantarctic waters and include radiolaria with affinity for Antarctic waters. The planktonic delta18O record for the site supports a 3°-6°C temperature change in near-surface waters between interglacial and glacial stages and indicates that during stage 5e, the near-surface waters were about 1°C warmer than at present. A pronounced cooling during stage 5d matches that of the Vostok ice core deltaD record, and negative excursions at the end of stages 2 and 6 support a southern latitude warming preceding northern hemisphere deglaciation. Benthic foraminifera typical of cold intermediate to deep waters can increase dramatically in abundance in the hemipelagic ooze intervals when delta18O results suggest a temperature drop in glacial stage bottom waters of 2°-4°C, possibly a result of upward displacement of Antarctic Intermediate Water by Circumpolar Deep Water at the site. The foraminiferal delta13C records support a reduced influence of North Atlantic Deep Water in the southwest Pacific during glacial stages, when nutrient enhancement occurred in both bottom and surface waters. Despite the pronounced changes between interglacial and glacial conditions inferred at site 594, contributed to by a substantial northward shift by at least 5° of latitude in the position of the Antarctic Convergence south of New Zealand during glacial episodes, we conclude that the Subtropical Convergence remained locked to Chatham Rise (approximately 44°S) throughout stages 1 to 6. Major compression of the intervening belt of Subantarctic water during glacial episodes, and the associated very steep thermal gradients and intensified atmospheric and oceanic circulation patterns that developed in this part of the southwest Pacific, account for the harsh, frigid environment reported for on-land southern New Zealand at these times.
