    Notes: Summary The particulate fraction in cell-free extracts of three Chlorobium strains was examined. It contains two structural components: membrane fragments and chlorobium vesicles. These two components have been separated, and certain of their properties compared. Both consist largely of lipid and protein. The lipids of the membrane fraction are predominantly phospholipids, but include a glycolipid which contains galactose, rhamnose and an unidentified sugar. The vesicles are highly enriched in bacteriochlorophyll, and contain large amounts of a monogalactosyl diglyceride; their content of phospholipid is low. All the succinic and malic dehydrogenase activity of the particulate fraction is located in the membranes, whereas NADH- and NADPH-linked dye reductases occur in both membranes and vesicles. The vesicles in crude extracts are unstable upon storage; they rapidly lose their characteristic structure, accompanied by a destruction of bacteriochlorophyll. These changes can be prevented by brief treatment of extracts with glutaraldehyde. Many of the isolated vesicles contain from 10 to 25 regular intravesicular structures, which are about 10 nm wide and circular, with a central hole 3 nm in diameter.

    Notes: Abstract The cockroach hindgut has a complex, active microbiota, a large portion of which is associated with the chitinous gut wall. It provides a different environment from that of termites and other insects which are dependent on their hindgut microbiota for the digestion of cellulose. The pH of the midgut of Eublaberus posticus was not as high as it is in insects with a primarily cellulolytic nutrition. The hindgut of E. posticus was highly methanogenic, normal adults producing typically 10–25 μmol of methane per hour. The hindgut contained large amounts of the storage products polyphosphate and poly-β-hydroxybutyrate. Dilution series on nonselective medium yielded 100 times more obligately anaerobic colonies than facultatively anaerobic colonies. The most common facultative isolates were Klebsiella oxytoca, Citrobacter freundii and Enterobacter agglomerans. Treatment of E. posticus with metronidazole caused a dedifferentiation of the different regions of the hindgut. One region of the hindgut is characterized by its visibly black color, a unique microbiota, and electron dense deposits in electron micrographs. Chemical determinations showed high concentrations of ferrous and sulfide ions in the region. X-ray microprobe analysis showed that some of the electron dense deposits consisted of iron, sulfur and lower amounts of copper, aluminium, and chromium associated with ruthenium red staining material. Spectra of other deposits revealed only silicon, which was not associated with ruthenium red.

    Notes: Abstract The relative numbers of fourteen microbial morphotypes in transmission electron micrographs of the hindgut of a cockroach, Eublaberus posticus, were counted and their distribution was analyzed statistically. The microbiota of three wall-associated regions (the anterior paunch, the posterior paunch, and the black band region) was clearly different from that of the gut lumen. The three wall fractions were also significantly different from each other. Only one of the fourteen types, prosthecate bacteria, appeared to be distributed randomly in the four fractions. The five main wall-associated morphotypes individually constituted up to 41% of the microbes in some micrographs. They included one type with the characteristic morphology of Methanospirillum. Six morphotypes rarely made up over 2% of the population, but were consistently present. The numbers of the remaining three morphotypes were quite variable between micrographs and between individual insects, but when present often made up 5–10% of the population.

    Notes: A second law paradox was previously proposed for a plasma contained within an infinite blackbody. The proposed second law paradox was dependent on the plasma having a nonzero floating potential [D. P. Sheehan and J. D. Means, Phys. Plasmas 5, 2469 (1998)]. This work demonstrates that a nonzero floating potential is indicative of some energy contained within the plasma that can be withdrawn from the plasma without violation of the second law. Furthermore, it is shown from the probe theory that the plasma in this hypothetical configuration must have a floating potential of zero at steady state.

    Notes: Recently it has been recognized that the neutral gas in inductively coupled plasma reactors heats up significantly during processing. The resulting gas density variations across the reactor affect reaction rates, radical densities, plasma characteristics, and uniformity within the reactor. A self-consistent model that couples the plasma generation and transport to the gas flow and heating has been developed and used to study CF4 discharges. A Langmuir probe has been used to measure radial profiles of electron density and temperature. The model predictions agree well with the experimental results. As a result of these comparisons along with the poorer performance of the model without the gas–plasma coupling, the importance of gas heating in plasma processing has been verified. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy has been used to quantitatively measure CF2 transients in 1 Torr capacitively coupled pulsed plasmas. Time resolved concentrations were obtained for both tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) and hexafluoropropylene oxide (HFPO) feed gases. In the TFE plasma, the CF2 production kinetics follow a first order rise to concentrations of ∼1014/cm3. In the plasma afterglow, a net production of CF2 is observed for a few milliseconds before the transient becomes dominated by a second order recombination process. In the HFPO plasma, three distinct regimes are observed in the plasma on time. Two production regimes exist, one presumably due to HFPO dissociation and the second due to an unknown source, beginning about 5 ms into the on time. Finally, the CF2 concentration passes through a maximum and decreases to steady state. The afterglow processes are similar to those observed for TFE. The production observed in the off time is believed to be related to surface processes. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A high density plasma from a methane–hydrogen mixture is generated in an inductively coupled plasma reactor, and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) are grown on silicon substrates with multilayered Al/Fe catalysts. The nanotubes are vertically aligned, and the alignment is better than the orientation commonly seen in thermally grown samples. A detailed parametric study varying inductive power, pressure, temperature, gas composition, catalyst thickness, and power to the substrate is undertaken. Transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy are used to characterize the nanotubes. Emission spectroscopy and a global model are used to characterize the plasma. The power in the lower electrode holding the substrate influences the morphology and results in a transition from MWNTs to nanofibers as the power is increased. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Neutral temperatures in inductively coupled CF4/O2/Ar mixture plasmas have been characterized by fitting the rotational envelope of emission spectra in a gaseous electronics conference reference cell. CF and CO are found to present different rotational temperatures with opposite trends with respect to pressure. It is proposed that CF is created as a rotationally and translationally hot molecule due to CF4 dissociation and the disparity in temperatures and temperature trend is indicative of incomplete equilibration of the CF with other neutral species in the plasma. This may have important consequences from the standpoint of understanding neutral reaction chemistries. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
