Notes: Abstract A study was made of populations in stationary equilibrium that satisfy the following conditions: (1) The birth rate is very large in relation to the capacity of the habitat. (2) The part of the mortality which is independent of age is easily measured and is found to be very high. For these populations the following conclusions were drawn from the experimental observations: (1) The populations in steady state show an inversely proportional relation between the maximum average age of its components and the mortality. (2) The biomass of a population in a steady state saturating a habitat remains constant in spite of changes in the mortality. (3) The population of organisms continually growing through life, whose steady-state equilibria are reached under conditions of high mortality are composed of great numbers of individuals with a small average size. The equilibria which are reached under conditions of low mortality are characterized by a small number of individuals with large average size.

Notes: Abstract Changes in time of populations ofBiomphalaria glabrata due to changes in the rate of infection bySchistosoma mansomi are investigated. This is done by applying Von Foerster equations with boundary conditions derived from experiment. The resulting equation is solved in some simplified cases and applications of the formalism to ecological problems is suggested.

Notes: Abstract Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas' disease, infects vertebrate cells after an initial step of parasite/host-cell recognition. Alpha-2-macroglobulin (A2M), an important type of physiological proteinase inhibitor found in tissues and in the plasma of mammals, inhibits cell invasion by T. cruzi and accumulates in sites of the inflamed myocardium associated with parasite antigens. To study whether A2M would bind to T. cruzi, an indirect immunofluorescence reaction was performed using two different anti-mouse A2M sera. Intense labeling was observed in the membrane lining the cell body and the flagellum of bloodstream trypomastigotes obtained from experimentally infected mice in the peak of parasitemia, suggesting that the antisera recognize plasma A2M associated with the parasite surface. Metacyclic trypomastigotes obtained in a serum-free defined medium reacted with anti-A2M only after previous incubation with purified human A2M. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) studies were applied to characterize better the binding of native (N-A2M) and of proteinase-complexed (P-A2M) forms of A2M. The “in vitro” binding of N-A2M to trypomastigotes was better at pH 5.0, followed by pH 10.0 and pH 7.4. Cysteinyl and serine proteinase inhibitors, E-64 and STI, respectively, inhibited the reaction. P-A2M also bound to T. cruzi in a dose-dependent way. Flow-cytometry studies showed that about 80% of the parasites stained with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled P-A2M (50 μg/ml) with high affinity at pH 7.4 (but also at pH 10.0) in a process that was reverted by the addition of unlabeled P-A2M or the calcium-chelator agent EDTA and also by incubation at an acid pH (4.0). These results suggest that (a) native-A2M binds to T. cruzi proteinase(s) and (b) T. cruzi expresses a receptor(s) that binds proteinase-complexed A2M.

Description: This data sets include yearly maps of land cover classification for the state of Mato Grosso, Brasil, from 2001 to 2016, based on MODIS image time series at 250 meter spatial resolution. Ground samples consisting of 2,115 time series with known labels are used as training data for a support vector machine classifier. The classes include natural and human-transformed land areas, discriminating among different agricultural crops in state of Mato Grosso, Brazil's agricultural frontier. The results provide spatially explicit estimates of productivity increases in agriculture as well as the trade-offs between crop and pasture expansion. Quality assessment using a 5-fold cross-validation of the training samples indicates an overall accuracy of 93% and the following user's and producer's accuracy for the land cover classes: Cerrado: UA - 99% PA - 98% Fallow_Cotton UA - 100% PA - 100% Forest UA - 99% PA - 98% Pasture UA - 95% PA - 96% Soy-Corn UA- 87% PA - 97% Soy-Cotton UA - 99% PA - 94% Soy-Fallow UA - 100% PA - 100% Soy-Millet UA- 84% PA - 84% Soy-Sunflower UA - 85% PA - 85% --- The correlation coefficients between the agricultural areas classified by our method and the estimates by IBGE (Brazil's Census Bureau) for the harvests from 2005 to 2016, were equal to 0.98. At state level the soybean, cotton, corn and sunflower areas had a correlation equal 0.98, 0.73, 0.96 and 0.80. --- The following data sets are provided: (a) The classified maps in compressed TIFF format (one per year) at MODIS resolution. (b) A QGIS style file for displaying the data in the QGIS software (c) An RDS file (R compressed format) with the training data set (2,115 ground samples). --- The software used to produce the analysis is available as open source on https://github.com/e-sensing. --- Note: The TIFF raster files use the Sinusoidal Projection, which is the same cartographical projection used by the input MODIS images. When opening the TIFF raster maps in QGIS, to ensure correct navigation please use the Sinusoidal Projection, by selecting in QGIS projection menu, the following option: "Generated CRS (+proj=sinu +lon_0=0 +x_0=0 +y_0=0 +a=6371007.181 +b=6371007.181 +units=m +no_defs)"
