    Notes: Summary. The purpose of this paper is to characterize the class of fiscal rules of income transformation which are equity improving and, at the same time, preserve the ranking of existing distributions. Contrary to the related literature individual well-being depends not just on income but also on prices. We show that, when the environment is restricted such that a general transformation class still can be defined, the only “desirable” fiscal rule is the simple redistributive linear taxation schedule, of the same type that is the rule in practice in most economies.

    Notes: Abstract Alginate synthesis by the highly mucoid Pseudomonas aeruginosa 8821 M is growth-phase-dependent, and the alginate produced per unit of biomass reaches maximum values in the deceleration phase of growth. However, the degree of polymerization increases as batch growth proceeds, reaching maximum values at the stationary phase of growth. The activity of the four enzymes leading to GDP-mannuronic acid formation, phosphomannose isomerase, phosphomannomutase, GDP-mannose pyrophosphorylase and GDP-mannose dehydrogenase peaked earlier at the late exponential phase. Growth-phase-dependent activity of alginate biosynthetic enzymes correlates with the level of transcription of the encoding alginate genes algA, algC and algD during growth, as indicated by Northern blot hybridization experiments. The pattern of coordinate trancriptional growth-phase regulation of these alginate structural genes concurs with the growth-dependent transcription of the regulatory gene algR1.

    Notes: During exponential growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae at the inhibitory pH 2.5, the transcription of the major small-heat-shock-protein-encoding gene HSP26 was strongly induced while at the optimal pH 5.0, the mRNA levels from the HSP26 gene were undetectable. When yeast cells entered the stationary phase of growth at pH 5.0, transcription was dramatically enhanced and the level of the HSP26 transcripts reached similar values in stationary cells grown at optimal or inhibitory low pH.

    Notes: The objective of this paper is to assess the potential of Portuguese manufacturing firms with respect to two fundamental issues that have been at the core of important debates about comparative advantages of small firms and large ones: (1) Employment: Using a database compiled between 1982 and 1992, we analyse the contribution of small firms to job creation. This analysis aims to consider the different aspects of firm mobility: Entry, expansion, contraction and exit. The results indicate that, in the period considered, only small firms created employment and that this creation is mainly associated with the expansion of young firms located in the Littoral North and Centre regions of Portugal. Nevertheless, when we consider only small firms that are incumbents in all the period, results indicate that job creation is a feature specific to a small number of fast-growing small firms. The effects of the economic cycle were tested too, and it was found that employment creation by small firms is less sensitive to economic fluctuations, as reductions in employment in small firms do not seem to grow in crisis periods. (2) Technical efficiency: Independently from the job creation potential, it is important to evaluate whether small firms use economic resources in an efficient manner. To assess the efficiency of small businesses relative to large ones, we use plant-level information, thereby specifying and estimating a translog production model. This model allows estimating and comparing returns of scale and substituting elasticities for both small and large production units, covering a large number of six-digit sectors for the year 1995. Preliminary results suggest that: (I) There are significant differences in the production technology between large and small establishments; (ii) small establishments do not appear to be more flexible than large ones in factor substitution; (iii) large size is not a condition for efficiency in production. Therefore, considering the importance and weight small firms have upon the manufacturing industry employment volume, and the lack of any evidence regarding technical inefficiencies in the production, we may infer that small firms justify the public powers' attention, while designing and implementing policies which would support their survival as well as their growth. Such policies should enhance and refine their labour (and management) qualification techniques as well as design better strategies for disseminating information and new technologies. In fact, these policies would most certainly promote the development of Portuguese small firms, turning them into more innovating, flexible and competitive ones, even in those industries which traditionally comprise large firms.

    Notes: Abstract We have studied the differences between erythrocytes and erythrocyte ghosts as target membranes for the study of Sendai virus fusion activity. Fusion was monitored continuously by fluorescence dequenching of R18-labeled virus. Experiments were carried out either with or without virus/target membrane prebinding. When Sendai virus was added directly to a erythrocyte/erythrocyte ghost suspension, fusion was always lower than that obtained when experiments were carried out with virus already bound to the erythrocyte/erythrocyte ghost in the cold, since with virus prebinding fusion can be triggered more rapidly. Although virus binding to both erythrocytes and erythrocyte ghosts was similar, fusion activity was much more pronounced when erythrocyte ghosts were used as target membranes. These observations indicate that intact erythrocytes and erythrocyte ghosts are not equivalent as target membranes for the study of Sendai virus fusion activity. Fusion of Sendai virus with both target membranes was inhibited when erythrocytes or erythrocyte ghosts were pretreated with proteinase K, suggesting a role of target membrane proteins in this process. Treatment of both target membranes with neuraminidase, which removes sialic acid residues (the biological receptors for Sendai virus) greatly reduced viral binding. Interestingly, this treatment had no significant effect on the fusion reaction itself.

    Notes: Abstract Temperature profiles (range 20–33 °C) were obtained for growth and exopolysaccharide (EPS) biosynthesis of the microalga Botryococcus braunii strain UC 58 under photoautotrophic conditions. The maximum temperature for growth was 32 °C and the temperature dependence of the specific growth rate was described by the Hinshelwood equation based on the Arrhenius relationship. The optimal range of temperatures for growth and extracellular EPS synthesis (25–30 °C) concurred and production of 4.5–5 g l−1 of EPS was obtained routinely, leading to high broth viscosities. Below 23 °C EPS biosynthesis was negligible, although the specific growth rate maintained high values. At supraoptimal temperatures EPS biosynthesis decreased, accompanying the increase in doubling time. The polymers formed at temperatures within the optimal range for production, when dissolved in water, produced solutions (2 gl−1) with the highest viscosity, suggesting that their molecular weight showed the highest values. The degree of polymerization of the EPS synthesized at suboptimal and supraoptimal temperatures was significantly below the values within the optimal range.

    Notes: Alcoholic fermentation of Jerusalem artichoke juice, a natural complex medium, allowed the production of 13% (v/v) ethanol utilizing an inulin-fermenting strain of Kluyveromyces fragilis, strongly sensitive to ethanol. However, the fermentation of a simple medium with a similar concentration of fermentable sugars (235 g/L) as saccharose stopped prematurely when only 7% (v/v) ethanol had been produced. Differences in the two fermentation profiles were attributed to the significantly lower ethanol tolerance of K. fragilis IGC 2671 in the simple medium with 2% saccharose as compared with diluted J.a. juice with a similar sugar concentration, in fact, (1) in diluted J. a. juice, growth was possible up to 8% (v/v) added ethanol compared with 6% (v/v) in simple medium and (2) ethanol-induced inhibition of the specific growth and fermentation rate as well as ethanol-induced stimulation of the specific death rate were much more drastic in simple medium. Present results show that (1) the complex composition of the medium used for alcoholic fermentation plays a marked role in the ability of the yeast to tolerate and produce ethanol; (2) J. a. juice proved a very appropriate medium for a productive alcoholic fermentation, namely, in processes based on strains with a low ethanol resistance; and (3) to characterize and compare the ethanol tolerance of fermenting yeasts, the standardization of the medium composition must be taken in consideration.
