Notes: Summary DevelopingBufo arenarum embryos were treated during gastrulation with cadmium chloride in concentrations ranging from 6×10−7 to 1.5×10−5 M Cd++ at 20 and 30°C. Initial failures at gastrulation result mainly in axial incurvations, microcephaly, hydropsy and abnormal tail formation. The higher temperature has a dual effect: at high concentrations of Cd early malformations are significantly increased, whereas at low concentrations the higher temperature prevents alterations.

Notes: Abstract Despite the large number of cranefly species only two have been convincingly associated with crop damage. The larvae of Tipula paludosa are commonly found as pests in both grassland and spring cereals whereas those of T. oleracea are only established as pests of winter cereals following crops of oilseed rape in the rotation. The latter, however, is probably the species involved in opportunistic situations involving various minor crops. These epidemiological contrasts are attributable to differences in the morphology and behaviour of the adults of the two species in relation to crop rotations. Larvae are sufficiently similar as to cause confusion in identification and this has hampered development of a clear picture of the ecology of the two species. Little is known about the distribution of T. oleracea larvae but T. paludosa larvae are largely regulated by climatic factors, especially rainfall, although the operation of these varies across the distribution range. Many natural enemies have been identified but a commercially viable control method using them has not yet been developed for either species. Control of T. paludosa is relatively easy using broad-spectrum insecticides but inconsistent kills have been observed with winter pesticide applications against T. oleracea. Determination of those fields requiring applications in advance of the damage remains the major problem, especially in grassland and winter cereals, to be resolved for the management of leatherjacket pests.

Description / Table of Contents: Bildung und Umwandlung von Ammincarbonatocobalt(III)-Komplexen.
Notes: The preparation is described of [CoCO3(NH3)5]ClO4 · H2O, trans-[CoCO3(NH3)4(15NH3)]ClO4, and trans-[CoCO3(NH3)4(NH2CH3)]ClO4. The transformation reactions of these complexes, in which a chelate carbonate ligand is formed and one NH3 is eliminated, were studied in solution and in the solid state. 1H NMR spectroscopy is used for the identification of the products. It is shown that the transformation reactions are not stereospecific.

Description / Table of Contents: Synthese, Charakterisierung und einige Reaktionen der trans-[Co(NH)3)4(CH3NH2)Br]2+- und trans-[Co(NH3)4(CH3NH2)NO3]2+-KomplexeDie Darstellung der trans- [Co(NH3)4(CH3NH2)Br]2+- und trans- [Co(NH3)4.(CH3NH2)(NO3]2+wird beschrieben.
Notes: The preparation of trans-[Co(NH3)4(CH3NH2)Br]2+ and trans-[Co(NH3)4(CH3NH2)-(NO3)]2+ complexes is described. The UV-VIS spectra of the complexes indicate a decrease of the ligand field compared to the parent pentaammines. Infrared spectra match with the pattern of the corresponding pentaammines. The catalyzed (by Hg2+) aquation of the trans-bromomethylamine complex go under retention of the stereochemical configuration. The base hydrolysis (studied at 25°C) products show trans to cis rearrangement for both complexes. 1H NMR spectroscopy is used for identification of the stereochemical configuration of the compounds.

Description / Table of Contents: Kinetics of the Aquation [Co(NH3)5DMSO](ClO4)3 · 2 H2OThe aquation rate constants of (dimethylsulfoxide)pentaamminecobalt(III)perchlorate in aqueous perchloric acid media has been determined spectrophotometrically under various conditions of acidity and complex concentrations at 25-50°C. The reaction proceeds by an first-order rate law presumably with D-mechanism, and is independently of the acidity. The values for the activation enthalpy and entropy has been calculated: ΔH≠ = 24,7 kcal mol-1; ΔS≠ = 4,5 cal K-1 mol-1.
