Notes: Poly (D,L-latic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) has been used as the artificial scaffold forblood vessel formation. In order to hinder smooth muscle cell (SMC) angiogenesis, new scaffolddesign method of loading Epigallocatechin 3-O-gallate (EGCG) on PLGA film was introduced.PLGA and EGCG were dissolved in acetone and film-shape scaffold was manufactured. Antiangiogeneticeffect of EGCG released on scaffold was analyzed for SMC and human umbilical veinendothelial cell (HUVEC) and method for selective inhibition from the difference of growth ofSMC and HUVEC was suggested

Notes: CexTi1-xO2 and H3PW12O40/CexTi1-xO2 catalysts were prepared by sol-gel method, and they were applied to the direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from methanoland carbon dioxide in a batch reactor. The reaction was carried out in an autoclave reactor at170oC and 5 MPa. It was found that CexTi1-xO2 exhibited a higher catalytic performance thanpure CeO2 and TiO2. The catalytic performance of CexTi1-xO2 was the maximum whenx=0.1. It was also revealed that H3PW12O40/CexTi1-xO2 catalysts showed a remarkablyenhanced catalytic performance than the corresponding CexTi1-xO2 catalysts. The amount ofDMC produced by 15 wt% H3PW12O40/ Ce0.1Ti0.9O2 catalyst was six times higher than thatproduced by Ce0.1Ti0.9O2 catalyst. It is concluded that both Brönsted acid sites provided byH3PW12O40 and base sites in CexTi1-xO2 played an important role in improving the catalyticperformance of H3PW12O40/CexTi1-xO2

Notes: A differential coating method is described for fabricating high-performance x-ray microfocusing mirrors. With this method, the figure of ultrasmooth spherical mirrors can be modified to produce elliptical surfaces with low roughness and low figure errors. Submicron focusing is demonstrated with prototype mirrors. The differential deposition method creates stiff monolithic mirrors which are compact, robust, and easy to cool and align. Prototype mirrors have demonstrated gains of more than 104 in beam intensity while maintaining submilliradian divergence on the sample. This method of producing elliptical mirrors is well matched to the requirements of an x-ray microdiffraction Kirkpatrick–Baez focusing system. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We describe the design, construction, and performance of the MHATT-CAT microdiffraction x-ray monochromator. This monochromator is specially engineered for x-ray microdiffraction experiments with a high brilliance undulator source. The monochromator passes a small emittance beam, suitable for focusing to submicron size with submilliradian divergence. Over its energy range of 8–22 keV the absolute energy calibration is better than 2 eV and scans of ± 1 keV show no measurable hysterisis. The monochromator operates with a simple water-cooled first crystal and shows no measurable warm-up time. Horizontal linear bearings allow the monochromator crystals to be rapidly inserted or removed from the beam. Slits before and after the monochromator work to pass broad bandpass or monochromatic x-ray beams at the same vertical height. The monochromatic beam direction is adjusted so the monochromatic and broad bandpass beams are coaxial. The design and performance of the monochromator allows efficient collection of microdiffraction data when coupled to a nondispersive Kirkpatrick–Baez focusing mirror pair. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Thirteen dibenzofuran (DF)-utilizing bacteria carrying the DF terminal dioxygenase genes homologous to those of Terrabacter sp. strain DBF63 (dbfA1A2) were newly isolated from activated sludge samples. The amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis and the hybridization analyses showed that these strains were grouped into five genetically different types of bacteria. The sequence analyses of the 16S rRNA genes and the dbfA1A2 homologues from these five selected isolates revealed that the isolates belonged to the genus Rhodococcus, Terrabacter or Janibacter and that they shared 99–100% conserved dbfA1A2 homologues. We investigated the genetic organizations flanking the dbfA1A2 homologues and showed that the minimal conserved DNA region present in all five selected isolates consisted of an ∼9.0-kb region and that their outer regions became abruptly non-homologous. Among them, Rhodococcus sp. strain DFA3 possessed not only the 9.0-kb region but also the 6.2-kb region containing dbfA1A2 homologues. Sequencing of their border regions suggested that some genetic rearrangement might have occurred with insertion sequence-like elements. Also, within their conserved regions, some insertions or deletions were observed.

Notes: The magnetic properties and Hall effects of Pd/Co multilayer films fabricated by thermal evaporation have been studied using the Hall hysteresis loop measurement. The polarity of the Hall hysteresis loops of Pd/Co multilayer changed between 4 and 5 monolayers (ML) of Pd. It was speculated that the reason for this phenomena is the change of the position of Fermi level of 3d band in Pd/1Co multilayer from lower half of the band to upper half of the band depending on the Pd thickness. The Hall resistivities as a function of Pd thickness were found to oscillate and the period of oscillation was about 5 ML of Pd. The change of saturation magnetization as a function of Pd thickness reflected the oscillatory behavior up to 7 ML of Pd and the enhanced Co moments were observed in the film with 4 or thicker ML of Pd.

Notes: Acoustic emission (AE) during plastic deformation is analyzed for a pure single crystal neglecting the effects of grain boundaries, impurities, and second-phase particles. Acceleration of a moving dislocation is considered to be the principal AE source. There are two major mechanisms of dislocation motion related to acceleration, initial, and continuous oscillatory motion. Initial motion induced by the creation of mobile dislocations is modeled as a step function of velocity. Continuous oscillatory motion produced by interactions with neighboring dislocations is modeled as a harmonic function. These mechanisms vary with strain and strain rate due to dislocation multiplication. AE can thus be described in terms of strain and strain rate. Annihilation at a free surface is also regarded as an AE source in addition to the initial and oscillatory motions. The kinetic and strain energies stored around a moving dislocation are dissipated during annihilation, and can be related to AE. The frequency spectrum of AE is also determined. A shift of the spectrum to higher frequencies with increasing strain is explained by an increase in the interaction force between dislocations.

Notes: Methods are derived for measuring local strain, stress, and crystallographic texture (orientation) in polycrystalline samples when 1–10 grains are simultaneously illuminated by an energy scanable or broad-bandpass x-ray beam. The orientation and unit-cell shape for each illuminated grain can be determined from the diffracted directions of four Bragg reflections. The unit-cell volume is determined by measuring the energy (wavelength) of one reflection. The methods derived include an algorithm for simultaneously indexing the reflections from overlapping crystal Laue patterns and for determining the average strain and stress tensor of each grain. This approach allows measurements of the local strain and stress tensors which are impractical with traditional techniques. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
