Notes: Abstract The pharmacokinetics of enantiomers of pimobendan and their demethylated metabolites in plasma and red cells were studied in 8 normal healthy volunteers. After racemic pimobendan 5 mg IV, the plasma concentration-time curve followed a two-compartment open-model with elimination half-lives of 1.81 h and 1.86 h for (+)- and (−)-pimobendan, respectively. The clearances and volumes of distribution postequilibrium were 13.5 ml · min−1 · kg−1, 14.4 ml · min−1 · kg−1; 1.74 l · kg−1 and 2.34 l · kg−1 for (+)- and (−)-pimobendan, respectively. Plasma protein binding (n=3) of (+)-, (−)-pimobendan, (+)- and (−)-demethylated metabolites was 97.6, 97.6, 92.2 and 92.5%, respectively. The plasma concentration-time curve also followed a two-compartment open model after oral administration of 7.5 mg racemic pimobendan. The absolute bioavailabilities of (+)- and (−)-pimobendan were 0.51 and 0.55. Peak levels of (+)-and (−)-pimobendan, both at 1.2 h, were 15.8 and 16.8 ng · ml−1, respectively. The (+)- and (−)-pimobendan concentrations in red cells were determined and their pharmacokinetics were estimated using red blood cell data. Interesting phenomena were observed: the peak concentrations of (+)- and (−)-pimobendan in red blood cells were about 5.5- and 9.2-times higher than in plasma, and the AUCs were correspondingly elevated. The volume of distribution of the central compartment of (−)-pimobendan in red cell was significantly smaller than that of (+)-pimobendan. (0.24 vs. 0.42 l · kg−1.) Similar phenomena were found after IV administration. These all indicated stereoselective partitioning or distribution of (−)-pimobendan into red cells. Since the elimination half-life of (+)- and (−)-pimobendan in red cells was similar (3.07 vs 2.97 h), the highly significant difference in clearance between (+)- and (−)-pimobendan (3.7 vs 2.3 ml · min−1 · kg−1) was solely due to the stereoselective distribution of (−)-pimobendan into the red blood cells. This stereoselective property of the (−)-isomer may be the explanation of a previous report that (−)-pimobendan produced a 1.5-times larger contractile force in detergent-skinned preparations of cardiac muscle from guinea pig and dog than the (+)-isomer.

Notes: Nano-structured TiN/TiBN multilayer thin films were deposited onto unheated Si(100)substrates by reactive unbalanced dc-magnetron sputtering in an Ar-N2 gas mixture at a pulsed-biasvoltage of –60 V. The effects of the bilayer thickness (Λ = 1.8-7.7 nm) on microstructures andmechanical properties have been analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolutiontransmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and microindentation measurements. Microstructurestudies revealed that the TiN layers were fcc B1-NaCl structure comprising of (111)- and(200)-oriented grains depending on Λ, while the TiBN layers were amorphous. Significantrelationships were found between hardness (H) and Λ. A maximum hardness of ~30 GPa wasobserved in a multilayer film with [removed info] = 1.8 nm. The possible hardness enhancement mechanismwas also discussed

Notes: Generation of a uniform density plasma has been a key consideration in the design of microwave/plasma processing systems. A circularly polarized wave can generate a plasma with good azimuthal uniformity as well as provide strong resonant interaction with the plasma electrons. In this article, we report the development of a three-port polarization converter which efficiently converts the TE10 wave of a standard rectangular waveguide into a circularly polarized TE11 wave of a cylindrical waveguide. Employing the same principle for mode conversion, the converter is also made to function as a protective device of the high power microwave source by providing a separate port for the return and damping of the reflected wave. Such a converter has been analyzed, constructed, and tested. At the operating frequency of 2.45 GHz, test results indicate a 25 dB return loss, 97% end-to-end polarization conversion efficiency, and better than 20 dB rejection of the reflected wave. The structural simplicity of the device allows high power operation as well as easy construction for system research and applications. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A novel scheme producing multiple, coherently phased, high charge (nC), short duration (ps) electron bunches in a radio-frequency (rf) photoinjector is presented. In this configuration, the mirror photocathode is an integral part of an optical resonator. The ultrashort laser pulse is reflected off the photocathode and recirculated through the optical cavity at a subharmonic of the rf drive frequency after extracting a photoelectron bunch. This new technique can dramatically increase the effective quantum efficiency of metals and produce high current, high brightness, prebunched electron beams ideally suited for high power coherent microwave generation. A proof-of-principle experiment operating at 0.250 GHz and using a frequency-quadrupled, mode-locked Nd:YAG laser has shown the production of a train of coherently phased photoelectron bunches, with a measured effective quantum efficiency enhancement of 4.2. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Low voltage cathodoluminescent characteristics of ZnGa2O4 phosphor grown by rf magnetron sputtering have been investigated from 300 to 700 nm. The effects of substrate heating and annealing treatment on the luminescent characteristics are also studied. A blue cathodoluminescent emission peaked at 470 nm is observed. Better luminescent properties are achieved on the films which have crystal structure with a standard powder x-ray diffraction pattern of ZnGa2O4. The effect of the strength of the ligand field on the resultant energy levels for the ZnGa2O4 phosphor is investigated. Low-voltage phosphor films with excellent cathodoluminescent characteristics have been successfully developed in this research.
