    Description: The main purpose of this scientific article was to disseminate the results of applied research of authors conducted within postdoctoral training sessions. The main objectives of the paper were: presenting current general economic and social context from Romanian rural areas and the specific problems of rural communities in the context of their integrated sustainable development; assessing the motivations of young university graduates (cycle I, II and III Bologna) to choose a rural area as a destination to live and work. To achieve these objectives has been achieved at national level case study based on an applied research materialized as the original investigation using a questionnaire with nine questions. In the applied / qualitative research were collected and processed 190 questionnaires completed by students, master and doctoral students from 11 higher education institutions in Romania, and the responses from the questionnaires were interpreted in conjunction with economic indicators and social features integrated economic development rural communities. For conceiving this article were made a series of original analysis, respectively they were issued some opinions and personal recommendations based on the experience of the authors as researcher and on the realities captured in the field. In the context of the integrated approach to the development of Romanian rural communities, purpose and outcome of the economical and social process it is need to find and maintain a balance between all parts of the countryside, so as to ensure both a quantitative trend upward (economic growth) and qualitative (sustainable development).

    Notes: Initial results from direct-drive spherical cryogenic target implosions on the 60-beam OMEGA laser system [T. R. Boehly, D. L. Brown, R. S. Craxton et al., Opt. Commun. 133, 495 (1997)] are presented. These experiments are part of the scientific base leading to direct-drive ignition implosions planned for the National Ignition Facility (NIF) [W. J. Hogan, E. I. Moses, B. E. Warner et al., Nucl. Fusion 41, 567 (2001)]. Polymer shells (1-mm diam with walls 〈3 μm) are filled with up to 1000 atm of D2 to provide 100-μm-thick ice layers. The ice layers are smoothed by IR heating with 3.16-μm laser light and are characterized using shadowgraphy. The targets are imploded by a 1-ns square pulse with up to ∼24 kJ of 351-nm laser light at a beam-to-beam rms energy balance of 〈3% and full-beam smoothing. Results shown include neutron yield, secondary neutron and proton yields, the time of peak neutron emission, and both time-integrated and time-resolved x-ray images of the imploding core. The experimental values are compared with 1-D numerical simulations. The target with an ice-layer nonuniformity of σrms=9 μm showed 30% of the 1-D predicted neutron yield. These initial results are encouraging for future cryogenic implosions on OMEGA and the NIF. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Description: The cross-plane thermal conductivity of thin films of WSe2 grown from alternating W and Se layers is as small as 0.05 watts per meter per degree kelvin at room temperature, 30 times smaller than the c-axis thermal conductivity of single-crystal WSe2 and a factor of 6 smaller than the predicted minimum thermal conductivity for this material. We attribute the ultralow thermal conductivity of these disordered, layered crystals to the localization of lattice vibrations induced by the random stacking of two-dimensional crystalline WSe2 sheets.
