Notes: A new solder-bumped flip chip land grid array (LGA) chip scale package (CSP) called NuCSP is presented in this paper. NuCSP is a minimized body size package with a rigid substrate (interposer). The design concept is to utilize the interposer to redistribute the very fine pitch peripheral pads on the solder-bumped chip to much larger pitch area-array pads on the printed circuit board (PCB). Using conventional PCB substrate manufacturing processes, NuCSP offers a very low-cost package suitable for memory chips and low pin-count application-specific ICs (ASICs). Also, NuCSP is surface mount technology (SMT) compatible and can be joined to the PCB with a 6-mil (0.15mm) thick 63wt %Sn-37% Pb solder paste.

Notes: Application of the geometric mean to holding-period returns is discussed from a statistical theory standpoint. The population geometric mean is considered a parameter of the probability distribution of returns its relationship to moments of the distribution is discussed. The sample geometric mean and its relation to sample moments is assessed through its sampling distribution it is viewed as an estimator of the population geometric mean. For application to long-term investment where a geometric mean is maximized, the distributional properties of the geometric mean should be used. The terms statistic, approximation, and parameter are differentiated.

Notes: The supply of and demand for residential mortgages has been the subject of much discussion in the literature. Many of these studies have used single equation, partial adjustment models with the price specified as the contract rate. In this study, two of the assumptions that underlie these previous studies are tested empirically. First, the proper specification of the price of mortgage funds is tested by using both the contract rate alone and all of the terms of the mortgage as the price. Second, the speed of adjustment in the mortgage market is examined by estimating the model in both the instantaneous adjustment and partial adjustment forms. Both of these tests are carried out using a simultaneous equation rather than a single equation model. The empirical results indicate that the contract rate along with the loan initiation fees, the loan-to-value ratio and the maturity is the better specification of price and that the partial adjustment model performs better than the instantaneous model in the mortgage market.

Notes: Summary When an electromagnetic wave is incident upon an interface between a free space and a compressible plasma, both an electromagnetic wave and a plasma wave are excited. This paper solves the scattering problem of an infinitely long conducting cylinder which is coated with a layer of compressible plasma. The source is assumed to be a magnetic line current which gives rise to an incident magnetic field with only an axial component. Complete expressions for both the scattered electric and magnetic fields and the guided pressure field are obtained. Scattering by a compressible plasma column and that by a conducting cylinder coated with an incompressible plasma layer are special cases of the present problem.

Notes: Abstract Brown and Gibbons (1985) developed a theory of relative risk aversion estimation in terms of average market rates of return and the variance of market rates of return. However, the exact sampling distributions of the relative risk aversion estimators have not been derived. The main purpose of this paper is to derive the exact sampling distribution of an appropriate relative risk aversion estimator. First, we have derived theoretically the density of Brown and Gibbons' maximum likelihood estimator. It is shown that the centralt is not appropriate for testing the significance of estimated relative risk aversion distribution. Then we derived the minimum variance unbiased estimator by a linear transformation of the Brown and Gibbons' maximum likelihood estimator. The density function is neither a central nor a noncentralt distribution. The density function of this new distribution has been tabulated. There is an empirical example to illustrate the application of this new sampling distribution.

Notes: Three new mutant alleles of maize alcohol dehydrogenase-1 (Adh 1) were recovered following allyl alcohol selection of pollen. Each is altered in quantitative, organ-specific, regulatory properties. All mutant sites act in cis to the structural gene component. One mutant arose spontaneously, one followed indirectly from irradiation with high Z accelerated particles, and one was induced by an autonomous mutator system. Each mutant is assessed in three organs by utilizing ADH allozyme ratios that were quantified at the level of ADH enzyme activity and either [3H]-Leu incorporation into newly synthesized ADH 1 subunits or direct protein determinations. One mutation simultaneously raises Adh 1 expression in one organ and lowers it in another, another affects expression in one organ only, and another is extremely underexpressed in all organs but is unstable. This unstable allele has generated derivative mutant alleles that have less or zero ADH expression. We do not yet know whether or not coding sequences are involved in these mutants. We conclude that information for organ specificity and quantitative behavior resides near or within Adh 1 coding sequences.

Notes: Bornyl cinnamate has been identified as a constituent of kava resin and of the steam distillate of Piper methysticum. 5-Hydroxydihydrokawain was identified in commercial samples of P. methysticum originating from Vanuatu provided an initial aqueous extraction was employed. Commercial preparations, and fresh samples of the root of this plant from Fiji, lacked this compound. Two previously described N-cinnamoyl pyrrolidine alkaloids were also observed along with stigmasterol in kava resin from Fiji and Vanuatu. The products derived from aqueous 2 M hydrochloric acid extraction of P. methysticum were determined from methane chemical ionization gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis which identified a series of hydroxylated compounds (15a-d) derived from formal decarbonylation of the parent kava lactones. The products (13a-c) of dehydration of these compounds were also observed. The efficiency of kava resin extraction from plant material by water (the traditional method of preparation of the kava beverage) was typically 5-10% of that recovered by direct extraction with an organic solvent.

Notes: Rous-sarcoma transformed BHK cells can be continuously cultured in a medium containing Eagle's Minimal Essential Medium, iron and biotin. The rate of cell multiplication increased when serine, or serine plus other non-essential amino-acids were added to the medium. With biotin deleted from the medium there is a reduction in DNA synthesis and most cells are blocked in G1.

Notes: Biotin or a serum lipid extract stimulated proliferation of G1 arrested Rous sarcoma virus-transformed BHK cells in modified Eagle's MEM (BM). The cells could be maintained continuously in BM plus biotin (BMB), but not in BM plus serum lipid extract (BM · L). Avidin inhibited growth stimulation when added to BMB, but did not inhibit growth when added to BM · L.14C-acetate incorporation into total cellular lipids was stimulated in BMB, but not in BM. Thin-layer chromatography of the labeled cellular lipid extract indicated that relatively large amounts of 14C-acetate were incorporated into phosphatidylserine and little into the other major phospholipids. In the neutral lipids, the largest amount of incorporation was in cholesterol.G1 arrested cells multiplied rapidly in BM supplemented with dialyzed serum (BM · DS), but they did not multiply in BM with delipidized serum (BM · DLS). The addition of biotin or serum lipid extract to BM · DLS stimulated growth. Growth stimulation in BM · DLS by biotin was inhibited by avidin, but avidin had no effect on growth stimulation by serum lipid extract. Biotin stimulated additional multiplication in BM · DS and avidin inhibited this additional growth stimulation. These results suggest that growth stimulation requires lipids supplied by serum lipids or by de novo synthesis stimulated by biotin. In the absence of serum, the stimulation of the synthesis of growth factor(s) by biotin are also required for continuous multiplication.
