Description: The Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) is the dominant component of tropical intraseasonal variability, with wide‐reaching impacts even on extratropical weather and climate patterns. However, predicting the MJO is challenging. One reason is the suboptimal state estimates obtained with standard data assimilation (DA) approaches. These are typically based on filtering methods with Gaussian approximations and do not take into account physical properties that are important specifically for the MJO. In this article, a constrained ensemble DA method is applied to study the impact of different physical constraints on the state estimation and prediction of the MJO. The quadratic programming ensemble (QPEns) algorithm utilized extends the standard stochastic ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) with specifiable constraints on the updates of all ensemble members. This allows us to recover physically more consistent states and to respect possible associated non‐Gaussian statistics. The study is based on identical twin experiments with an adopted nonlinear model for tropical intraseasonal variability. This so‐called skeleton model succeeds in reproducing the main large‐scale features of the MJO and closely related tropical waves, while keeping adequate simplicity for fast experiments on intraseasonal time‐scales. Conservation laws and other crucial physical properties from the model are examined as constraints in the QPEns. Our results demonstrate an overall improvement in the filtering and forecast skill when the model's total energy is conserved in the initial conditions. The degree of benefit is found to be dependent on the observational setup and the strength of the model's nonlinear dynamics. It is also shown that, even in cases where the statistical error in some waves remains comparable with the stochastic EnKF during the DA stage, their prediction is improved remarkably when using the initial state resulting from the QPEns.
Description: Unsatisfactory predictions of the MJO are partly due to DA methods that do not respect non‐Gaussian PDFs and the physical properties of the tropical atmosphere. Therefore the QPEns, an algorithm extending a stochastic EnKF with state constraints, is tested here on a simplified model for the MJO and associated tropical waves. Our series of identical twin experiments shows, in particular, that a constraint on the truth's nonlinear total energy improves forecasts statistically and can, in certain situations, even prevent filter divergence. image

Description: Data of the broadband albedo averaged at the MODIS pixel, which was derived from the measurements by either pyrometer (shortwave, in the range of 200-3600 nm) or albedometer (visible in 400-700nm, near infrared in 700-2100, and shortwave in 400-2100) during the ACLOUD and AFLUX campaigns. This data is intended to validate the RTM-SciML (short for radiative transfer model - scientific machine learning model) algorithm, which uses top-of-atmosphere radiance data from MODIS as input to perform albedo retrieval for sea-ice surface. In addition to the satellite and measured data, the pixel type and surface classification retrieved using scientific machine learning models (https://tc.copernicus.org/preprints/tc-2021-397/) are also included.

Notes: Natural and raw high-silica kaolins are firstly processed into fine kaolin powders withoxidation-reduction bleaching method before mixed with Al2O3 powders and then baked to producemullite composite oxides at temperature between 1050-1150°C. The mullite composite oxides are furthermade into composite mullite nanocrystals by using open-system hydrothermal crystallization methodunder normal pressure. Analysis of the final products show that the mullite nanocrystals are texturallyhomogenous at an average size around 80-100 nm and have high thermal stability

Notes: The formation of the Goss texture in electrical steels is one of the most distinct phenomena of texture research. Nevertheless, disregarding 60 years of research the mechanisms which let only Goss-oriented grains grow abnormally during a secondary recrystallisation annealing are still not completely understood. The present paper reviews some of the mechanisms of growth selection and oriented nucleation and discusses them in the light of observations made by the authors. We conclude that no mechanism proposed so far is able to explain all experimental observations. This points out the need for the search for a different mechanism

Notes: Isothermal anneal experiments have been conducted over a wide temperature range from 300 to 900 °C for polycrystalline YBa2 Cu3 O7−x samples in air. The phase transformation and oxygen contents of the annealed samples were studied and determined by x-ray diffraction and iodine titration. Oxygen diffusion coefficients at different temperatures were determined by a novel technique based on direct observation of the oxygen diffusion fronts by polarized light microscopy. The activation energy for the diffusion of oxygen in YBa2 Cu3 O7−x was obtained by an Arrhenius plot of the diffusion coefficients at different temperatures. The tetragonal-to-orthorhombic phase transformation controlled by oxygen diffusion is discussed.

Notes: Steady-state flow stress of dense (99% of theoretical) polycrystalline YBa2Cu3O7−δ has been measured in direct compression at temperatures between 870 and 980 °C in oxygen partial pressures of 0.03, 0.18, and 1.0×105 Pa for strain rates between 5×10−6 and 4×10−5 s−1. The stress exponent was close to one, indicating that diffusional flow was the dominant deformation mechanism. The flow stress decreased with decreasing oxygen partial pressure, obeying a power law with an exponent of approximately 1/2 . The activation energy was about 800 kJ/mol at an oxygen partial pressure 1×105 Pa, but decreased to 600 kJ/mol at a pressure of 3×103 Pa.

Notes: The sintering kinetics of YBa2Cu3O7−x have been studied from 870 to 930 °C in oxygen/argon mixtures ranging from 0.2% to 100% oxygen. For sintering at temperatures below that required for formation of any liquid phase, densification rates increased with decreasing oxygen concentration, and transport critical current densities increased with increasing density. The activation energy for sintering was 190±30 kJ/mol.

Notes: Tracer diffusion of 110Ag in YBa2Cu3O7−δ has been measured in the temperature range 800–950 °C using serial sectioning. The polycrystalline samples were made either from a powder containing about 0.2% Zr prepared by a conventional technique, or from a purer powder that had been calcined in low-pressure oxygen. Concentration profiles indicate both a volume and a fast diffusivity path contribution to diffusion. The activation energies were 227±3 and 249±17 kJ/mole for samples made from powder calcined in low-pressure oxygen and conventional powder, respectively. Diffusion was slower in the samples made from the purer powder.
