Notes: Summary The expression of common fragile sites at 69 bands was evaluated in 20 normal children and in 15 children with newly diagnosed acute leukemia using medium with folate (FA+) and without folate (FA-). As expected, the FA- medium significantly increased expression of aberrations in all study groups but the differences were larger for normal children than leukemic children. The major effect of the FA- medium was a generalized increase in aberration frequency over all sites rather than site-specific increases. A tendency toward clumping of aberrations within cells was exhibited in both media. Aberrations were seen at 81% (FA+) and 83% (FA-) of the 69 bands, with 4 sites -3p14, 6p21, 9q13, and 17q23 — recorded in most of the study individuals. In addition, 12 sites not previously recorded as common or rare sites had significant levels of expression in at least one study group.

Notes: [Auszug] Fig. 1 Cell in pachytene. The broken arrow points to a G group bivalent and solid arrow to an A group bivalent, most possibly chromosome number 2. The technique for the preparation of the meiotic material was a modification of that reported previously5 and was as follows: after the outer ...

Notes: The purpose of this paper is to develop a dynamic model of mortgage refinancing in a contingent claim framework that simultaneously solves for the borrower's optimal mortgage refinancing strategy, the value of the refinancing call option, the value of the mortgage liability to the borrower, and the market (lender) value of the fixed-rate contract. We also calculate the minimum differential between the contract rate on the existing mortgage and the current interest rate that is required to trigger an optimal mortgage refinancing.

Notes: The exchange rates between the currencies of European Monetary System (EMS) members are essentially fixed between narrow bands mandated by the Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM). the intent of such a fixed rate regime is to enhance policy co-ordination within the EMS. However, it has instead led to German policy dominance within the system according to several recent studies. We examine the optimal dynamic credit policy of a bank in an EMS country that is subject to such German ‘dominance’. Our stochastic control model reveals conditions under which German monetary policies can influence domestic bank lending behaviour. It also suggests that banks may be able to hedge such risk exposure by increasing in size. the model offers ‘credit supply' based explanations for recent regulatory reforms in Europe towards unified banking and the attempts of several EMS members to de-link their policies from that of the German Bundesbank.

Notes: Abstract Water-soluble vitamins, amino acids, and nontoxic pharmaceutical excipients were studied as solubilizing agents for poorly water-soluble adenine (nucleic acid base), guanosine (nucleoside), and structurally related drugs (acyclovir and triamterene). The apparent solubility of the substrates (adenine, guanosine, acyclovir, or triamterene) was appreciably increased by forming complexes with the ligands (vitamins, amino acids, or other ligand). Apparent association constants (K a ) values were measured at 25°C in pH 7 phosphate buffer using phase solubility analysis. The effect of combination ligands on substrate solubility was also studied. Additive solubility enhancement was obtained for several ligand pairs.

Notes: [Auszug] Sir — In 1994 we received a personal communication from Straub, Kendler and colleagues that two markers on chromosome 6p22-25, D6S296 and D6S285, gave positive lod scores above 2.00 in schizophrenia pedigrees from Ireland. Results obtained with these and other nearby markers have now been ...

Notes: Summary Chromosome analyses were done on umbilical-cord blood leucocyte cultures of 225 full-term low birth weight neonates as well as 225 normal birth weight newborn controls who were matched with the study group for sex, race and maternal age. Five chromosome anomalies were found in the study group, i.e. two male infants had 47, trisomy 21 syndrome, two female infants had 47,E18 trisomy syndrome and one female had an extra small chromosome which was morphologically similar to a G group chromosome with a short arm deletion. On the other hand, one boy in the controls had 47,trisomy 21 syndrome. The results suggest that chromosome aberrations play a role in the etiology of low birth weight in full-term infants.

Notes: Summary The absence of folic acid results in an increase in spontaneous chromosome breakage in the presence of, but not in the absence of, methionine. This is similar to the methionine effect seen in studies of the fragile X chromosome. The results support the idea that fragile sites and at least some types of spontaneous chromosome breaks may share a common mechanism.

Notes: Abstract We analyze the new market-index certificates of deposit (MICDs), which pay variable interest pegged to the performance of the Standard and Poor's (S&P) 500 stock market index. The pricing formulas as well as the equilibrium relationship between the participation percentages for both the call-and put-type MICDs are derived and discussed. From the implicit value of the option component we compute implied standard deviations (ISDs) for the market index, and find inconsistencies in the pricing policies of the recent issuers of MICDs. The terms under which “bear” versions are being offered are particularly unattractive, and offering better terms would create new opportunities for the issuers of MICDs. We also analyze the issuer's risk exposure, and discuss the natural as well as the dynamic hedging strategies.

Notes: Abstract The ammonia synthesis rate has been measured as a function of the potassium coverage of a polycrystalline iron foil. The results clearly demonstrate a promoting effect of the potassium in agreement with the work of Ertl et al. on the dissociative dinitrogen adsorption at iron single crystal surfaces. However, the results also imply a marked difference between the state of the surface under ammonia synthesis conditions and during the dinitrogen adsorption experiments in ultra-high vacuum. It is suggested that in the former case the potassium atoms are surrounded by several strongly adsorbed atoms effectively blocking the corresponding sites for dinitrogen dissociation.
