Description / Table of Contents: PREFACE The emergence of new information from drilling in deep-sea and coastal areas and the surfacing of the plate tectonics theory probably had the greatest impacts in recent decades on the highly accelerated growth of knowledge regarding the evolution of sediments and sedimentary rocks. Studies in recent years have also provided new insights on global sedimentary processes, and isotopic tools in many ways have enhanced our knowledge and have provided even an unexpected added dimension to the mechanisms of some specific processes. Many different uses of isotopic tools in studies of sedimentary processes can be found in the literature, but the information is highly scattered in the vast field of sedimentology. The disseminated state of existing isotopic knowledge on sedimentary systems has undoubtedly deprived many practitioners in the field to fully appreciate the benefits and limitations, and even the apparent confusion, concerning the use of isotopic tools. We have endeavored here to bring together discussions on some major sedimentary systems in the sedimentary cycle and to analyze them according to isotopic evidence. To accomplish such a task required contributions from many individuals. We were fortunate to have friends who accepted to share our goals. We most sincerely thank all the contributors to this book and deeply appreciate their patience and fortitude despite our undue demands on them to reach our objectives...

In:  Supplement to: Haggerty, Janet A; Chaudhuri, Sambhudas (1992): Strontium isotopic composition of the interstitial waters from Leg 125: Mariana and Bonin Forearcs. In: Fryer, P; Pearce, JA; Stokking, LB; et al. (eds.), Proceedings of the Ocean Drilling Program, Scientific Results, College Station, TX (Ocean Drilling Program), 125, 397-400, https://doi.org/10.2973/odp.proc.sr.125.124.1992
    Publication Date: 2024-01-09
Description: The strontium isotopic data presented here are from interstitial waters squeezed from unconsolidated serpentine, an unusual type of substrate that was recovered from Mariana and Bonin forearc seamounts and has not been previously drilled by the Deep Sea Drilling Project or Ocean Drilling Program. The texture and composition of some of these serpentine deposits from Conical Seamount, located on the Mariana forearc, indicate emplacement as low- or high-viscosity, cold gravitational flows, which are therefore neither sediment nor igneous rock. The strontium isotopic ratios of the interstitial waters from the unconsolidated serpentine range from 0.70912 to 0.70525 and trend toward a relatively less radiogenic composition with increasing sub-bottom depth. These strontium isotopic ratios are derived from at least two strontium sources: seawater and igneous. The strontium isotopic gradients from the interstitial waters from the Leg 125 sites are probably the result of diffusive transport of strontium from an igneous source deep within the lithosphere that may be contaminated with subducted or underplated sediment.

Notes: Abstract The heterogametic females of the jungle babbler, Turdoides s. striatus and red-breasted parakeet, Psittacula alexandri fasciata belonging to the orders Passeriformes and Psittaciformes respectively in the subclass Carinatae have ZW sex chromosomes. The W chromosomes in both the species are of the size of smaller macrochromosomes or larger microchromosomes and they are easily identified in both species.

Notes: Abstract Karyotype analysis and morphometric measurement of the chromosomes of eleven species of Indian birds are described. The unequivocal identification of W chromosome in the females of five species of the present investigation further strengthens the generalisation that, at least in Carinatae, the sex chromosome constitutions are of ZZ and ZW types in males and females respectively. — The chromosomes of different species of birds so far worked out in each order have been compared using quantitative methods and tentative conclusions have been drawn regarding chromosomal affinities between species of different taxonomic categories.
