    Description / Table of Contents: This special issue contains contributions presented at the international workshop Seismic Waves in Laterally Inhomogeneous Media V, which was held at the Castle of Zahrádky, Czech Republic, June 5 - 9, 2000. The workshop, which was attended by about 60 seismologists from 16 countries, was devoted mainly to the current state of theoretical and computational means of study of seismic wave propagation in complex structures. The special issue begins with papers dealing with the study and the application of the ray methods. Problems such as coupling of quasi-shear waves or smoothing of models for effective ray computations are dealt with. Applications of the ray methods in seismic exploration are presented. Further, directional wavefield decomposition, phase space, path integral and parabolic equation methods are discussed. Attention is also devoted to attenuation and scattering problems, and to seismic inversion problems.

The most important topics are two-point ray tracing, grid calculations of travel times and amplitudes and seismic wave propagation in anisotropic media.

    Notes: Abstract The seismic wave field is considerably influenced by local structures close to the source and to the receiver. This applies to sources and receivers situated close to localized inhomogeneities, to structural interfaces, to the earth's surface, etc. In this paper we concentrate our attention mainly to the ray-theoretical radiation patterns of point sources situated close to the structural interfaces and to the earth's surface. In numerical modeling of high-frequency seismic wave fields by the ray method, the interaction of the source with the earth's surface has not usually been taken into account. The proposed procedure of the computation of the radiation patterns of point sources situated directly on structural interfaces and on the earth's surface is based on the zero-order approximation of the ray method, assuming that the length of the ray between the source and the receiver is long. The derived equations are extended to point sources located close to structural interface, to the earth's surface and to thin transition layers using the hybrid ray-reflectivity method, seeČervený (1989). The thin layer need not be homogeneous; it may include an arbitrary inner layering (transition layers, laminas, etc.) The only requirement is for the layer to be thin. Roughly speaking, we require its thickness to be less than one quarter of the prevailing wavelength. The hybrid ray-reflectivity method describes well even certain non-ray effects (tunneling.S * waves, etc.). Explicit analytical expressions for radiation patterns for all above listed point sources are found. These expression have a local character and may be easily implemented into computer codes designed for the routine computation of ray amplitudes and synthetic ray seismograms in 2-D and 3-D, laterally varying isotropic layered and block structures by the ray method. Numerical examples of radiation patterns ofP andS waves of point sources situated close to the earth's surface and to a thin low-velocity surface layer are presented and discussed. The explosive point source (center of dilatation) and the vertical and horizontal single force point sources are considered. It has been ascertained that the radiation patterns of point sources depend drastically on the depth of the source below the surface even if the depths vary within one quarter of the prevailing wavelength.

    Notes: Possible applications of dynamic ray tracing to the 3-D Born and Kirchhoff inversion of seismic-reflection data are discussed. It is shown that the most important quantities in the inversion integrals, such as the Beylkin determinant and the amplitudes of the ray-theory Green functions, can be determined using the dynamic ray-tracing procedure. Dynamic ray tracing can be simply performed along known rays in a very general, laterally varying, layered background medium. The algorithms do not require the determination of the derivatives of traveltimes which play an important role in some other methods. They will find valuable applications particularly in complex 3-D structures.

    Notes: The traveltime perturbation equations for the quasi-compressional and the two quasi-shear waves propagating in a factorized anisotropic inhomogeneous (FAI) media are derived. The concept of FAI media simplifies considerably these equations. In the FAI medium, the density normalized elastic parameters aijkl(Xi) can be described by the relation aijkl(Xi) =f2(xi)Aijkl, where Aijkl are constants, independent of coordinates xi and f2(xi) is a continuous smooth function of xi. The types of anisotropy (Aijkl) and inhomogeneity [f(xi)] are not restricted. The traveltime perturbations of individual seismic body waves (qP, qS1 and qS2) propagating in the FAI medium depend, of course, both on the structural pertubations [δf2(xi)] and on the anisotropy perturbations (δAijkl), but both these effects are fully separated. The perturbation equations for the time delay between the two qS-waves propagating in the FAI medium are simplified even more. If the unperturbed (background) medium is isotropic, the perturbation of the time delay does not depend on the structural perturbations (δf2(xi) at all. This striking result, valid of course only in the framework of first-order perturbation theory, will simplify considerably the interpretation of the time delay between the two split qS-waves in inhomogeneous anisotropic media. Numerical examples are presented.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden die Kopfwellen untersucht, die beim Auffallen einer harmonischen Schall-Kugelwelle auf die Ebene Grenzfläche zwischen zwei flüssigen Medien entstehen. Vorausgesetzt wird, daß die Grenzfläche „schwach“ ist, d. h. daß die Geschwindigkeit der Schallwellen im Medium mit der Erregungsquelle nur um weniges kleiner ist als die Geschwindigkeit der Schallwellen im Medium ohne die Quelle.
