Notes: Abstract  In Drosophila a remarkable feature of oogenesis is the regression of the nurse cells after dumping their cytoplasmic contents into the oocyte. We have studied the nature of this process at the late stages of egg chamber development. In egg chambers DAPI staining shows highly condensed chromatin from stage 12 and TUNEL labelling shows DNA fragmentation up to stage 14. Gel electrophoresis of the end-labelled DNA, extracted from isolated egg chambers at the same stages of development, shows a ladder typical of apoptotic nuclei. This provides evidence that, during Drosophila oogenesis, the nurse cells undergo apoptosis. Apoptotic nuclei have also been detected in dumping-defective egg chambers, indicating that the cytoplasmic depletion of nurse cells is concurrent with but apparently not the cause of the process.

Notes: 4-mercaptoaniline functionalised platinum particles of 2 nm diameter were synthesised and over-grafted with 2-thiophenecarbonyl chloride. The derivative particles were dispersed in DMSO and gave long term stable suspensions. The Langmuir-Blodgett technique was then used to build up stable Langmuir-Blodgett films and the electrochemical behaviour of these ultra-thin films towards oxygen reduction was investigated in an acidic medium. It revealed direct activity without any previous activation treatments despite of the presence of the organic shell at the particle surface. Furthermore, XPS experiments revealed that the organic crown was not significantly destroyed on prolonged cycling. The results open a way to study original and versatile platinum-based nanocomposites

Notes: The fatigue behavior of metals is strongly governed by the grain size variation. As thetensile strength, the fatigue limit increases with decreasing grain size in the microcrystalline regime.A different trend in mechanical properties has been demonstrated in many papers for metals withultrafine (〈 1 m) and nanocrystalline (〈 100 nm) grain size in particular in the yield stress andfatigue crack initiation and growth. The fatigue behavior of electrodeposited nanocrystalline Ni (20and 40 nm mean grain size) and nanocrystalline Co (20 nm) has been analyzed in the present paperby means of stress controlled tests. The monothonic mechanical properties of the materials wereobtained from tensile tests by employing an Instron 5800 machine by measuring the strain with anextensometer up to 2.5% maximum strain. The strain gage specimen dimensions measured 20 mmlength and 5 mm width, all the specimens were produced by electro-discharge machining. The lowcycle fatigue tests were performed with specimens of the same geometry of the tensile ones intension-tension with load ratio R=0.25. The fatigue crack propagation experiments were carried outby employing single edge notched specimens measuring 39 mm in length, 9.9 mm in width andwith an electro-discharge machined edge-notch of 1 mm. All the endurance fatigue and crackpropagation tests were performed at 10 Hz

Notes: Thermolastic Stress Analysis (TSA) has been recently developed as a direct investigatingmethod for the study of the stress field around the crack tip of a cyclically loaded structure. Theadvantage of using measurement techniques based on the thermoelastic effect lays in the fact thatstress intensity factors may be determined based on the effective stress distribution around the cracktip rather than calculated from the crack length and amplitude of cyclic loads. This paper reportsresults related to fatigue tests on Friction Stir Welded alluminium alloys sheets. Fatigue crackpropagation experiments were performed by employing single-edge notched specimens, in tensiontensioncondition with R=0.1, up to failure. The application of TSA allowed the monitoring of crackformation and growth in real time, providing the actual stress distribution around the crack tip forthe different technological parameters used in the welding process. Stress intensity factors weredetermined based on the TSA data and compared to those calculated using an ABAQUS FE model

Notes: The effect of processing parameters on mechanical and microstructural properties of dissimilarAA6082-AA2024 joints produced by Friction Stir Welding was analysed in the present study. Differentsamples were produced by employing a fixed rotating speeds of 1600 RPM and by using the advancingspeeds of the tool of 80 and 115 mm/min. All the welds were produced in direction perpendicular to therolling one for both the alloys and by changing, for all the processing conditions, the alloy positioned on theadvancing side of the tool. The mechanical properties of the joints were evaluated by room temperaturetensile tests. Fatigue tests on the welds were carried out by using a resonant electro-mechanical testingmachine under constant loading control up to 250 Hz sine wave loading. The fatigue tests were conductedin the axial total stress-amplitude control mode with R=smin/smax=0.1. The microstructural evolution of thematerial was analysed by optical observations of the welds cross sections and SEM observations of thefracture surfaces

Notes: Summary A mathematical model of the far-field diffraction pattern of a laser beam with laser heating self-phase modulation through an optically thin film is presented. We deal with the steady-state temperature field generated by the weak absorption of a laser beam in an optically and thermally thin film bounded by two transparent plates, the cell walls, whose thermal exchange to the surrounding ambient has been assumed to be linear in the temperature difference to the ambient. These hypotheses describe the application of the steady-state «thermal lens» spectroscopy to the detection of the optical or thermal properties of liquid samples. We give a very simple expression for the diffracted intensity that appears suitable for fast computer calculations. The good accuracy of the technique is shown by comparison with the results given by more intricate approaches.
