Notes: Abstract A 7 kg stone of a Carrara marble was reduced to grains smaller than 100 μm, mixed and homogeneized in order to prepare a marble reference material. The homogeneity was tested for 16 elements by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). Through a one-way analysis of variance based on several analyses of each of 15 bottles and within the same bottle, it was concluded that the inter-bottle heterogeneity is not greater than the intra-bottle heterogeneity. Results on the concentration of major and trace elements in the marble reference material, obtained by different laboratories and different techniques, are given. The limestone certified reference material KALKSTEIN KH was used to evaluate measurement accuracy, to intercalibrate laboratories, and to provide compatibility of measurement data.

Notes: Abstract The neutron activation analysis (NAA) was applied to the multielement analysis of the mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata Wied., taken from a stock produced at the Tropical Scientific Research Institut (IICT) in Lisbon, and to its artificial food. Dry samples were irradiated in the OSIRIS reactor, within a work performed at the Laboratoire d'Analyse par Activation Pierre Süe (CEA/CEN-Saclay). The contents of Ca, K, Mg, Cl, Na, Fe, Zn, Al, Mn, Ba, Rb, Br, Co and Cs for the cases of Ceratitis capitata Wied. eggs, larvae, pupae, males and females and of its artificial food are reported.

Notes: Abstract The IAEA-331 spinach material NIST SRM 1570a Spinach Leaves, submitted to an intercomparison run by the IAEA, has been analysed by k0-based INAA with counting using both low and high energy photon detectors. The results have been compared with (i) the certified values of the NIST SRM 1570a; the agreement is good, taking into account the uncertainties; and (ii) the certified and “consensus” values of the former NIST SRM 1570 Spinach Leaves, their composition in minor and trace-elements are quite similar; however a lower content has been observed for Co, Fe and Sc in the IAEA-331 and for Zn in the SRM 1570. For quality control, the NIST 1573 Tomato Leaves and the NIST 1575 Pine Needles have been analysed using the same conditions as for the IAEA-331. The results agree quite well with the certified and “consensus” values given in the literature.
